My Host Family ♥
Meet my home stay family! Kazuyuki Aoyagi, Hayato Ayoyagi (8), Naoto Aoyagi(3), and Akiko Aoyagi, from left to right!
They were extremely nice people who welcomed me very warmly into their home. I was fortunate but also unfortunate enough to get a family that also spoke English since they had just come back from living in the US for 4 years. Fortunate because we could hold complete conversions unlike some of my friends with their families, struggling with the language barrier. Unfortunate because it didn’t force me as much to use my Japanese, and if I had used it more, the more I would have learned! So both pros and cons, but ultimately I’m glad they did know English because we could talk so easily with each other (of course we still tried to facilitate me using my Japanese).
I was scared at first because they had children, and I get really nervous around them (though I said it was fine if my family did have children in my application because I was hoping to learn from them). However, we ended up getting along really well, the older host brother, Hayato, even showing me this app game he really loves that we started to play together! Naoto, the younger, was super cute because he would struggle to remember how to say my name, he kept calling me “’emi” (versus Demi, as in the title of this blog lol). He took a little more time to warm up to me, but it helped that his brother was chill with me, so Naoto just kind of followed suit I think.
So when I had gone over there, we had left the US on the 23rd, 3 days before my birthday on the 26th! And my host mother had noticed this and decided to do a small celebration, knowing that it was pretty lonely not being able to celebrate with my family back home.
A kind of rice cake, with raw salmon on top! ( This is where I started to find out I’m not super into raw fish... X0 It was delicious regardless though!!)
I think both of these things were store bought, and they were amazing and super appreciated!!!! This is where I learned that I absolutely love kiwi! My host mother got me hooked! Lol
We had to get a picture of us both ♥ Sent it to my mother to reassure her I was being treated quite well :P
So needless to say, I had an amazing time with my host family. I do have to admit it was hard at first, I was amazingly awkward (that’s nothing new), and had to deal with a lot of anxiety, stress, and depression from being away from home. I was so sad/scared the first day that I cried myself to sleep o_o First time in my life! And I think within the first week I cried again and my host mother caught me, it was so embarrassing, hnnnngh. I was super frustrated at the fact that my phone that I had bought to use in Japan wasn’t working (because yes that’s a thing, couldn’t just use my own phone, wouldn’t work with their towers, I’ll touch on that later). I was struggling to get it to work, and was still super emotional, but my host mother understood, and even tried reaaaaally hard to get my phone to work! She even attempted to take me to a phone service store, but unfortunately they were closed. I got it to work eventually (like halfway into the trip....) but I really appreciated her trying so hard, having seen me so upset. Thinking back on it now I don’t think I appreciated it enough, and I wish I had said so much more! (Luckily we swapped Line ID’s so I’ll have to contact her sometime and make sure to tell her again!)
I didn’t get to interact with the father much. He may have just been a man that liked to mostly keep to himself, or maybe he just wasn’t as confident in his English (I think its probably the former), but still he was super nice like the rest, and super welcoming. Also a funny guy when he wanted to be lol. I did realize though that he worked a lot! I had learned that about Japan (that work an extreme amount of hours), but to experience it first hand really drives the notion home (and confirms it, because of course I can hear a lot of things, and “learn” but until you experience firsthand you can’t really say much about it imo).
It was really sweet because my host mom even told me that she’s usually kinda lonely, even with her children, since her husband is working and away so often, so to have had me there to help fill up the time was extremely nice. And I’m glad I was able to help :)
They took me a lot of places themselves too! But I think I’ll save those stories for later.
