New book just arrived for my thesis reference. It’s called Spesies-spesies Kayu dalam Seni Ukiran Melayu (Wood Species in the Art of Malay Carving) by Ismail Said and Ahmad Saifuddin Abdullah. As much as it is educational, I enjoy the fact that the book is also mystical and metaphysical concerning the Malay culture and their humble deference towards the selection of woods prior to carving. It also touches on rituals to be performed beforehand and taboo when one produces woodcarving motifs for one’s quarters.
