Meniere’s Disease Summarized
Hmmm. Ear disorders.. fun.
So Meniere’s disease is accumulation of fluid in the cochlea duct of the ear. The swelling
So, as you can see, the anatomy of the ear is a very close knit section. Any swelling in this area is going to cause more than one problem. Firstly, we have tinnitus, or ringing in the ears. I can’t find an exact “why” this happens with this disease, but my guess would be the swooshing of fluids so close to the auditory tubes. Again, that’s my guess. Next, this is usually associated with vertigo problems. This is because repeating damage to the vestibule and vestibulocochlear nerve. These are important in maintaining balance and perception of position. So these patients will be dizzy, nauseous, and maybe even vomiting. Because this is such a tight little space, any changes in the pressure of the ear will be felt also. These patients will have “pressure in the ear”. They may also complain of a headache.
The great thing is there is treatment! Woohoo!
So these patients have a fluid accumulation.. One way to help decrease fluid build up is to decrease sodium intake. Sodium is known for making our bodies retain water. Why wouldn’t it help our ear fluids to decrease sodium for them too? :) They may also have quite a few prescriptions. Firstly, some doctors may prescribe a diuretic.. to get the fluid off! They may also have antivertigous medications and antiemetic medications.
There’s also some really interesting devices that can help. A Meniett device is inserted into the inner ear and it applies small amounts of pressure a few times a day. Lots of patients report relief with this.
There is also surgical treatment (labyrinthectomy). However, with this surgery, patients should be informed they’ll be completely deaf in this ear.
