Thesis diary #12

Third day of working on general historiogaphical materials. In the morning I wrapped up the last couple of things of the first article I read, and also read a review of a monography dealing with the relationship of history and anthropology in the study of witch-hunts. I also read another article, which I will finish annotating tomorrow.

Aside from my thesis work I finally picked up The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I have seen this book everywhere for the past two years or so and I ended up falling for it aswell. This is very far from what I would pick for myself, but the only thing I know is that there is so bisexual representation, which isn't that common in books, and I am really looking forward for that. I am about a hundred pages in and I am pretty hooked I must say, the writing really makes you desperate to know more about the life of this fictional Hollywood star. Other than reading I have also done my daily practice of Irish on duolingo, I worked on my bullet journal, and I have done a bit of writing to conclude one of the short stories I have been working on for a while.

Today didn't go as planned. I was supposed to have the day off work, but I ended up going and working all morning. This was due to the fact that it was the first day of opening after a small summer break, and you have no idea what kind of mess it is dealing with newspapers and magazines. I stll managed to take a morning walk, because I went to work by walking, and I got to see two roe deers on my path. Anyway, after everything I still had a small thing to do with my brother, for work, in the afternoon. I then started reading one of the archeology articles I have to study. I must say I have struggled with my focus studying. I did about a third of it and took some notes. I have also finished tabbing the book on roman myths I am currently reading, so that I will find informations again in the future. I have planned what I am going to study tomorrow, and I now plan to write down a new inttoduction post for this blog, and after that I want to take some time to practice self care.

23rd August - Have you ever been really badly sunburnt? 

Not really. The few times I got sunburnt it was a bit on my nose, but not much.

This morning I struggled quite a bit to keep my focus. I still managed to finish my second reading of chapter I have to write a paper on. With this second reading I also took some notes, and I have a clearer idea of the subject. Other than this I practiced Irish on duolingo, I continued reading Gone Girl by G. Flynn, I edited the short story I wrote for February, and then in the afternoon I catched up with a friend.

Tranquil's study challenge 2022 // Day Fifteen: What makes you feel at home within yourself? It can be a physical object or activity, or just something you tell yourself to make you feel more accepted and loved in your own skin.

This may sound weird, but ever since I started getting tattoos I have grown more and more comfortable in my skin. It's a weird thing cause I often forget that I even have ink on my skin, but then I either move my arms or see myself reflected in a mirror, and I have this rush of evergy of like " I am slowly reaching my final form". Every single one of them was meant to be on my skin, and getting them is almost like finding an image under a scratch ticket (am I making sense? probably not).

March productivity challenge // 1st March: What are your goals for this month? What's something you're looking forward to?

This month I have to study all the material for my philosophy of science exam in April. It's a lot of stuff. I also have a yearly goal of writing a short story each month, so that's another think I plan on doing this month, and I have a good idea already, so I'm really excited for that.

2nd March: Do you consider yourself a workaholic? What times do you feel most productive?

I don't really like the word, but I'm pretty sure it fits with the person I am. I am the most productive in the morning, and it slowly wears off the day.

Again as yesterday, this afternoon I have struggled to keep my focus on what I was studying. Anyway I still managed to be productive, today I:

Continued my first re-reading of the syllabus of historical sources for my history of ancient philosophy class (which I am doing with another re reading of the notes I took during the class). I managed to do everything linked to Plato and his early successors in the Academia.

Revised some important dates by writing them down again

Continued the audiobook of the lord of the rings

Read the 45 pages of "philosophy a graphic guide", to help revising important informations about early philosophy

Organized my to-do list for tomorrow

Now I will do some writing, I am still making the digital copy of the short story I have written last month (and when I will be done with that one I still have to work on a short story for this month, but I have the plot set already). And after that I hope to find some time for self care, because I really need that.

Today I started reading the second book I have to study for my archeology exam. I am not liking it as much as the first one, but it's still pretty interesting. I read 3 full chapters, and created a bit of a plan for this reading. Today I must say I felt a bit agitated the whole day, as if my anxiety is in the back of my head all of the time. I haven't figured out the reason yet, but I want to do a nice list of everything I have, and I want, to do. I feel like a better organization could help me calm down. I also plan on both starting to journal regularly again, and take morning walks as soon as I can.

Summer studying challenge // 18th August -  What is your favourite summer drink?

I drink hot tea, and herbal tea, all year. I guess I could go with herbal teas made of fresh herbs I grow in my garden, like sage and mint and much more. If I have to go with something cold I'd say lavender lemonade.

I am so proud of how the widget of my tablet turned out, after I custumized it.

I had a couple of people ask me about it. This is a Samsung Tab S6 Lite. It came with its own S Pen, and I must say it was a great investment. I had pondered the idea of getting one for a couple of years, after seeing the potential of such a thing from other people online. I had put it off for two main reasons, it wasn't necessary for me at the time, and the only tablets I saw online were ipads that costed way too much. I found myself actually looking into tablets to buy one last year. It became necessary with online classes, and the insane amount of digital materials. Being able to read, highlight and annotate the documents without printing hundreds of pages, was the reason that finally convinced me on this investment. I will admit I got lucky at the time because there was a promotion in the local store I got my tablet in, but I should also say that the starting point wasn't as high as ipads. After more or less a year of having it, I can say it was worth it. I get to annotate all types of digital materials, and with the kidle app I can finally preted ti have a ebook of my own for school books.

The day didn't start well. I woke up way earlier that I had planned due to period cramps (tmi? probably). I took advantage of that time to finish the audiobook of The Colour Out Of Space by H.P. Lovecraft. In the morning I didn't go to work as usual, insted for some reason I had the responsability to go by myself to get stuff for the store. I mean I had done it before, with my mother, but this time I was the one who had to make the decisions and everything, cause I was alone. I managed to do it in the end. In the afternoon I started a new H.P. Lovecraft audiobook, The Shadown Over Innsmouth. I have also took some time to re read a couple of chapters of an old witchy book on runes. After that I had my study session, in which I finished reading and annotating the last archeology article of my list. Later I plan on continuing the audiobook while setting up my bullet journal for September.

Summer studying challenge // 27th August - What’s happening once this summer is over? Returning to school or uni? Starting something new?

I don't even want to think about it. I'm back on uni work (as if I had stopped during the summer). I have to finish some exams, work on my thesis and graduate. The past year it's been so stressful, I can't wait for this to be over.
