Hello, I am a 20 year old female med student in Baja California, Mexico.
In my country, you can apply to med school straight out of high school, but it’s incredibly difficult to get in, people try up until 4 times with no luck, so when I did, I applied as a senior in high school without studying at all for the multiple tests they applied and was admitted as position 30 out of the 2000 applicants and only 90 spaces they offered, I became too confident.
Confidence is good, but I thought “I am incredibly smart, I don’t even need to do anything and I will do good”, so, during my first semester I barely went to classes, just reviewed a little at home, and I passed everything just fine, with an 8.8 average grade out of my 6 classes, which wasn’t outstanding but it was good for doing little to nothing, further proving my thoughts.
So the next semester, I thought it would be the same, and it was for the most part, I had 6 subjects again and passed 5/6 with grades over 80, but the last one.. I failed, and not because I didn’t pass the tests, but because I missed so many classes and laboratory attendance was considered, so my grade went all the way down to a 57, I considered dropping out, became depressed, didn’t even go to the extraordinary test (a test we apply that evaluates your knowledge in the subject and if you pass, they give you a passing grade instead of the failing one), my mom convinced me to stay and this experience taught me that no matter how smart I am, hard work is always required in order for me to be excellent, because smart people can fail too.
