Favorite course? I loved my Web Design course and Cultures in Conflict courses at University

Career aspiration? Paralegal for the District Attorney’s Office, and legal advocate for victims of stalking, especially in states whose laws offer perpetrators too many advantages via grey area and loopholes.

If you couldn’t be #8, what would you be? A web designer and developer

Moment you knew what you wanted to do? After I was stalked by a police officer who used work equipment, resources, databases and coworkers to stalk me. It is not legally considered stalking in Oregon (where it happened), but it is in my current state of Wisconsin.

STUDY ENVIRONMENT

Where is your favorite place to study? My computer, which has three 43″ monitors on top of an actual conference table. It’s nice for spreading out on.

When is your favorite time to study? My favorite is late night studying, between the hours of 10pm to 7 or 8am.

Clean desk or organized mess? Clean desk!!

Music or no music? What type? If I listen to music, it has to be lyric-less music because I get too distracted by the words. 

Name top 3 worst distractions. Twitter, my boyfriend (who I live with), and YouTube 

Exam time, dress up or dress down? Dress down, because I like to be super comfortable in otherwise stressful exams. 

Exam time, hair up or hair down? Hair up and out of my face. When I’m hyper-focused, the tickle of my hair gets extra annoying. 

Favorite outfit for studying? Honestly, just undies and a tee-shirt

Favourite study scent? Always flowers, specifically jasmine, gardenia, or honeysuckle.

STUDY TOOLS

Name 5 things you would consider your ‘study essentials’. I would say my Pentel side-click pencil, my color-designated Staedtler pens, my midliners, and notecards. 

Hardcopy books or pdf online? HARDCOVER - I don’t know what it is but I cannot stand e-textbooks or typing up my notes (despite the fact that I was a computer science major. There’s something special about highlighting an actual book and writing notes down. I feel like you get to spend more time with the material. 

Favorite study snack? drink? White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cliff Bar and coffee.

Favorite pen (or pencil)? Pentel Side-click mechanical pencil - I cant stand back-clicks because it makes me change my grip on the pencil every time.

Favorite notebook/paper? I’d like to explore more notebooks, like the leuchtturm1917 but I’ve been a Five Star notebook buyer since grade school. Maybe next semester. 

Name 5 apps/tools that help you be productive. GoogleDrive, FamCal (my boyfriend and I’s synced calendar), the recorder app on my phone so I can listen back to lectures... I don’t know, I use paper more than apps. 

How many pens/pencils/markers are in your pencil case? 2 pencils, 1 pen, 8 Staedtler pens, 8 midliner highlighters.

Backpack or purse? Backpack, but a messenger bag.

How many notebooks do you have? Five notebooks (one for each class), and one leather portfolio with a legal pad for my volunteer position with the DA’s office. 

STUDY HABITS

How do you motivate yourself when you’re not motivated? When I’m not motivated, it’s typically because I’m too anxious. So I’ll take a break, take a bath, have a snack, declutter my desk, and that typically does the trick.

Pump up routine before writing an exam? run through notecards, listen to metal music tbh (I know it’s an unpopular genre but it gets your blood going).

Crammer or pacer? For assignments and general studying, I’m a pacer, and for papers I am a crammer ~ but not a day-before crammer kind of way, just in a I’m-on-a-roll kind of way.

Type of learner (kinesthetic, auditory, visual)? Kinesthetic in the sense that if I don’t physically write it out, I am less likely to remember it. It forces me to take my time with each definition/equation/theory. Then visual in the sense that, when I’m taking a test, I visualize exactly where on what page that information is written on.

How do you plan? (digital, planner, lists, no plan, etc.) Depends. Generally speaking, for my day, I use FamCal which syncs my boyfriend and I’s calendars together. For studying, like which order I’m going to read chapters/start essays/etc, I use notcard to-do lists. 

Preferred note-taking method? The outline method, although I am going to attempt the Cornell method this semester.

Do you make to-do lists? How? Yes, religiously. I go class by class, starting with the lightest homework first. For example I’ll start with readings for class A, followed by the online quiz for class B, then begin the rough draft for my paper in class C.

Do you stick to your to-do lists? Yes, about 90% of the time. If I don’t then it’s because it’s for the heavier homework like a rough draft paper in class C, in which case it’s me not following my to-do list because I’m taking a break and finishing later.

Group study or independent study? Independent is good for when I’m in a hyper-focused study session, but groups are really good at motivating me because I’m competitive I want to be the most productive one there. 

Average number of hours of sleep during exam time? Probably 8? I have to sleep more than the average person - I’ve been that way my whole life (it’s not a laziness thing). I typically sleep 10 hours or so, and have difficultly sleeping from the anxiousness of the upcoming test.

Ever pulled an all-nighter? Back when my PTSD was really bad I could never sleep at night, so I’d begin studying at 10pm and go to bed at 7 or 8 when dawn starts peeking through my blinds. So I used to be an exclusive “all-nighter”

STUDY MENTALITY

What do you do to recover from getting a grade lower than expected? I figure out where the hell I went wrong. Did the test come from the textbook instead of class notes? Did I focus more on general theories or ideas instead of the specifics like when and where or vice-versa?

One advice you’d give others? There is more than one way to get to where you want to go. I did a lot more writing of papers than weekly assignments in university. For papers, my best advice is to tailor the paper to what the teacher would like for optimal grading leniency. For example, in my Anthropology 380 course ‘Cultures in Conflict,’ I had to write about two cultures that struggled when they met. I may have enjoyed writing about a culture clash such as native amazonian tribes who are expected to stay “primitive” to satisfy the curiosities of american tourism, but I knew my teacher was into anime. So, I wrote my 20 page paper on “The Proliferation of Japanese Anime in American Pop Culture.” I got 110% on that paper (there were XC opportunities for that paper which I took, but I ALSO wasn’t graded down for ANYTHING because she loved the topic so much), and because it counted for so much of my grade, I ended that semester with 104% overall in that class. 

What are you most proud of right now? Honestly, my desk. I took so much time on setting it up exactly the way I like it, and it’s so big and aesthetically pleasing that it’s EASY to WANT to study. 

Favorite quote to keep you going? Someone somewhere is having a worse day than you. (So even if I don’t want to get up at 7:00am, I should appreciate that it’s my biggest struggle today)

Favorite way to destress? A BATH WITH A LUSH BATH BOMB

Favorite 5 studyblrs? I can’t think of them all now, but I will make another post of people that pump out the type of content that made me love Studyblrs in the first place soon.

How often do you check Tumblr? 2x-3x a day?

Hobbies when you’re not studying? Playing video games (overwatch), taking care of my succulent garden (I easily have over 100), and watching political/social commentary on YouTube.

Favorite compulsory-reading book? Suspense/Crime books. I just Finished ‘Women in the Window’ which I read all in one day.

@studyvany Thank you for tagging me in the 5 things you like about yourself challenge! It’s a cute challenge (I used cute for lack of a better word) that spreads positivity!

Well I am pretty shit at most things but some things I like about myself are:

1. My dedication/motivation to do something when I want to do it. If I have a set goal, I would go to the ends of the Earth to accomplish it and would not let anyone deter me from what I want to do.

2. I would like to think that I’m intelligent via a philosophical perspective. Basically I can contemplate life’s deeper questions and not go absolutely insane. I’m pretty philosophical so that makes me kinda wise(?) I would say. I like that I might have a different outlook on life due to different experiences I had shaping the way I view the world.

3. I can make people laugh. Yeah, that one is pretty self-explanatory. Occasionally I can make make people laugh irl. I’m pretty shit at making jokes online though.

So, yeah! That’s what I like about myself. Sorry about not having 5 qualities like the challenge said, I just don’t have enough things I like about myself to add up to five. (yikes that was depressing I didn’t mean to go all grunge edit on this) Three things is close enough though, right? Anyways thanks for tagging me! I originally found this tag from @organizedminimalist and wanted to share because my studyblr is relatively new! Make sure you use the #studyblr tag if you decide to do it also, which I hope you do.

GENERAL

What country are you currently studying in? Pennsylvania, USA.

What’s your major or specialization? Neuroscience as my major and creative writing as my minor

What year are you in? 1st year of undergrad

What courses are you taking? This semester I’m in creative writing, psych/neuro introduction, German language, and international politics, but next semester I’ll be taking biology, the nature of hope (psych-based), modernism and modernity in literature, and archeoastronomy.

Favorite course? My favorite course is actually from my dual enrollment in high school at a different university; I took an anthro class on Women and Religion. It was superb and the prof was very intelligent/ laid back.

What languages do you know? Which do you want to learn? My first language is English but I’m also proficient in German, and in the future I want to learn Morse code and French! I started studying German in seventh grade, so about 12 years old??

What language do you study in? Which language do you think in? I study in English (except for my German homework😜 ) and usually I’ll think something first in English and then my brain tries to articulate the same thing in German. Weird, right?! Sometimes I also try to think of a German synonym for an English word if I’m writing a paper.

Career aspiration? My goal is to either go to Med school for psychiatry or get my PhD and become a professor. I love being able to mentor people and help them reach their fullest potential! Conducting research is also super fulfilling to me.

If you couldn’t be #8, what would you be? I would want to be a poet, pastry chef, museum exhibit designer, or public figure.

Moment when you knew what you wanted to do? I don’t think there was a definitive moment when I decided… it was more of a process or system in which I weeded out what I like and don’t like. And I’m still going through that process!

STUDY ENVIRONMENT

Where is your favorite place to study? It depends on what I’m doing and what mood I’m in but usually a quiet place that’s good for people watching. So perhaps a library or cafe :)

When is your favorite time to study? The morning!

Clean desk or organized mess? Best intentions are tidy though sometimes I fall short

Music or no music? For studying I sometimes listen to piano/violin classical or swing jazz but usually nothing with lyrics; it gets distracting and I can’t focus!

How do you motivate yourself when you’re not motivated? Talk to a close friend, look at other studyblrs for tips, assemble my study outfit, snacks, and tools and dive in!

Pump up routine before an exam? Usually I have to pump myself DOWN haha because I’m jittery. I’ll take deep breaths and think about how everything in my life will be the exact same after it’s over and that in the long run, it probably won’t matter.

Crammer or pacer? Pacer!

Type of learner? Kinesthetic, visual, and writing

How do you plan? With my at-a-glance weekly/monthly planner and occasionally google calendar.

Preferred note-taking method: by hand for sure. I can make all sorts of graphs and notes during class that take too long to generate online

What of you do to recover from getting a grade lower than expected? I always remind myself that it’s the collective that matters, not each individual test. Then I usually mope for a bit and then go get help from my teacher/professor.

One advice you’d give to others? Don’t try to study all the time! Have other important projects that you invest yourself into, such as volunteering or creating an online presence.

What are you most proud of right now? In high school I won a national award for a research project that is very near and dear to my heart. Other than that, I’m currently working on a chapbook so that makes me proud!

What country are you studying in now? USA

What’s your major or specialization? I have no idea, but I’m considering Art History, Neuroscience/Neurology/...everything neuro lol, Psychology, &/or Business

What year are you in? 1st year in General Studies atm.

What courses are you taking (/will be taking if on break)? I haven’t even enrolled/picked my classes yet! lol!

Favorite course? I have a feeling it’s going to be Drawing, but who knows?

What languages do you know? Want to learn? I am only fluent in English atm, but I used to be fluent in Lao. Languages I’d like to learn?: (especially) Korean & Japanese, Latin, French, Italian, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Thai, refresh on Lao, and Hmong (due to being half Hmong.)

Moment you knew what you wanted to do? I slowly understood what I wanted to do from little snippets of ambition. I finally understood the whole picture about a year or two ago.

When is your favorite time to study? I don’t have a favorite time lol, but late mornings/late nights to early mornings. I like it to be dark outside basically.

Clean desk or organized mess? Depends on the mood, but clean messy...if that makes sense? The exact stuff I’m studying with would be messy while everything else is organized.

Favorite outfit for studying? Same-old sweats. Maybe in pj shorts this time if it’s hot. But tbh, even if it’s cold... I’d wear shorts and jus use a blanket.

Name 5 things you would consider your ‘study essentials’. 0.3 mm or smaller mechanical pencil, small black MUJI eraser, 0.5 mm or smaller black gel pen, small ruler (6ish inch,) graph paper, hobonichi techo planner (random notes are in there,) laptop/phone (online notes & pinterest for study layout inspo,) books, and music.

Hardcopy books or pdf online? Both are okay with me, but the physical book is a tad bit easier.

Favorite study snack? drink? Goji berries or blueberries... maybe grapes. Slightly chilled water or coconut water.

Favorite pen (or pencil)? Pilot for my pen. I lost my pencil, so I’m not sure about that one at this moment. I’ll edit it in later.

Favorite notebook/paper? I love, love, love graph paper (specifically the SMALL squares like within the hobonichi techo.) I also love the Cambridge notebook papers, but they’re on the expensive side. As for blank pages? Textured sketchbooks like the Canson Mixed Media Pads.

Name 5 apps/tools that help you be productive. Evernote, but recently an addition of the Bear app (transitioning note-taking app,) Tick Tick, TORA reminder app, myHomework Student Planner, and still discovering!

How many pens/pencils/markers are in your pencil case? I haven’t been pen/pencil/marker shopping yet... so 2 black gel pens, 1 0.3 mm mechanical pencil, and the rest are MUJI erasers and a ruler.

Backpack or purse? Backpack, and SOMETIMES a shoulder laptop bag.

How many notebooks do you have? ROFL. A LOT. I’m a journal/notebook/sketchbook-hoarder-in-responsible-journal/notebook/sketchbook-purchasing-training member. My favorite “note” journal/notebooks are my hobonichi techo, moleskine journals, my large Cambridge lined notebook, and graphing notepad. Since I’m trying to avoid buying journals/notebooks/sketchbooks, I’ve been using Evernote & Bear like crazy.

STUDY HABITS

How do you motivate yourself when you’re not motivated? Take a break, stroll through the amazing study note-taking on pinterest/tumbr/instagram, think about my future and the ambitions I have, &/or listen inspirational speeches.

Pump up routine before writing an exam? Bag needs to be packed, have to have showered, dressed nicely, hair done and minimal make up applied - and listen to either EDM or coldplay on my way there. Finish a crying session with Korean Dramas, reading serious-businss tumblr threads, get dressed in sweats, put on my eyebrows, contemplate on eyeshadow or eyeliner, coconut oil & bite lip agave lip mask lip time, tie my hair up, pack my bag, sit down and scroll through phone one last time for a while AND ALSO EAT SOME FOOD, head there, and pray I’ll stay awake.

Crammer or pacer? Both, but mostly crammar. I for some reason have a part time studying/remembering long-term knowledge under pressure. Short-term memory is stronger for pressure/stress.

Type of learner (kinesthetic, auditory, visual)? Visual and a little bit of kinesthetic.

How do you plan? (digital, planner, lists, no plan, etc.) myHomework planner, Tick Tick if needed, planner, more lists (the more I write it down, the more I remember to do it/makes it a higher priority in my mind.)

Preferred note-taking method? Typed/digitally AND hand-written/drawn. I have to do both.

Do you make to-do lists? How? Hell yes, I do. I make lists EVERYWHERE. I LOOOOVE making lists.

Do you stick to your to-do lists? Depends on the list. But majority of the time. It has to be high-priority/a list I create on every item I can think of.

Average number of hours of sleep during exam time? I can’t do less than 6 hours, or I’ll pass out during the day/exam.

What do you do to recover from getting a grade lower than expected? I feel down about it, but I know I end up having a decent to great grade at the end of the road. That’s all that matter to me... trying my best.

One advice you’d give others? There is more than one way to get to where you want to go. Put your heart into your work. The more genuinely interested you feel, the easier and BETTER you learn and remember anything. Find interest. Find purpose.

What are you most proud of right now? Surviving schoolwork with lack of motivation from depression.

I saw this a while ago, and really wanted to do it, but never got around to doing it until now! 

GENERAL

What country are you studying in now? Sydney, Australia

What’s your major or specialization? none? I’m still in high school lol

What year are you in? I’m in year 9 :)

What courses are you taking (/will be taking if on break)? I take all the mandatory year 9 courses (maths, science, English, geography, history, careers, phys ed), as well as drama, Japanese, and agriculture.

Favorite course? Drama! It’s so much fun. After that it’d probably be Japanese, and then science.

What languages do you know? Want to learn? English and Cantonese (which I speak at home but i can’t read/write) and I am learning Japanese at school. I’d like to learn Mandarin, French and Latin, but I had to drop French and Latin at school because I could only study one language :((

What language do you study in? Do you think in a different language? Nup- English only! Though very very very rarely I might think in Cantonese if I’m surrounded by my family who are only Cantonese speakers

Career aspiration? Vet or psychologist?? Idk I’m still in year 9.

Moment you knew what you wanted to do? Idk, my family’s been a big influence on me, and I’ve always wanted to be a doctor since I was little, but that’s changed slightly as I’ve gotten older.

Ever pulled an all-nighter? Ye once, and it wasn’t even for anything important, I just got caught up in reading lol

STUDY MENTALITY

What do you do to recover from getting a grade lower than expected? I don’t normally get too worked up over grades. I’d feel a bit disappointed in myself, and it’d stick in my head for a bit. But I’d forget about it pretty quickly because whenever I get grades, its always during school where I’m with my friends, and we discuss other things to take our minds off it.

One advice you’d give others? I mean, I’m only in Year 9 but don’t stress the small stuff? Just take life as it comes, and sometimes there’s not much you can do about what happens. Try hard, and work hard, and you’ll achieve your goals eventually.  

What are you most proud of right now? I got Dux of English last year, and got an award for outstanding academic excellence in my area in Year 6

What do you do to recover from getting a grade lower than expected? To be honest, it’s been a long time since I got a lower grade than I expected. Which is kind of scary because I don’t know what I’ll do if it happens at my graduation exams or something like that.

One advice you’d give others? Try to avoid burn-outs. Don’t take on too much and if you do, make sure you take breaks and take care of yourself. Learn to prioritize. World wont burn if you don’t do that one thing that’s not really that important but is really time-consuming. World won’t, but you will.

What do you do to recover from getting a grade lower than expected? I’ll always compare my grade to other people’s, to reassure myself. It also depends on how low it is. My expectations are usually quite accurate though :/

One advice you’d give others? What you are bad at today might be your strength one day… I am a firm believer in that mentality and have proved it more than once ! What’s important is to work hard at everything you do.

What are you most proud of right now? My constant hard work and no-rest mentality I’ve been surviving on since September 1st
