your study space
12 SEPTEMBER 2018 // READ ON BLOGSPOT
Everyone needs a study space. That’s a fact. Everyone needs a workplace they can call their own, where you’re comfortable enough to work without distractions like pins and needles or ringing phones, or the alluring call of sleep.
But there are many different types of study space. How do you pick the right one?
Not your bedroom.
Your bedroom is a place for sleeping, not studying. Don’t change the connections your brain has made between your bedroom and sleep, or you’ll find yourself too sleepy to study or too alert to sleep. Or both. In that order.
I’m being a bit careful with this one, because I study on the bed in the spare room of my house. However, this is not my bed, and I very rarely sleep in here. For me, this room as a whole is associated with study, so it hasn’t been a problem for me. It depends on the person, I suppose.
Natural light.
We’re not made for fluorescent lights. Find a study space with access to a window, to keep the light welcoming and warm, and to provide a refreshing breeze when you’re feeling a bit sleepy.
The best colours.
According to the Huffington Post, the best colour for a study space is orange! Apparently, the bolder oranges stimulate focus and concentration, while softer oranges soothe - which may be good for calming those revision stresses.
Other good colours for concentration are blue, and green, both for being very natural and stimulating for the mind. That doesn’t mean you need to go painting your house, but if you have a room already in one of these colours, that’s a good start!
Never fear if you don’t. My study space is a warm white colour with some browns, which makes me feel very calm and isn’t easily distracting. Once again, feel free to ignore the experts and do what’s best for you.
Be comfortable.
Creaky chairs = creaky back = discomfort. Don’t fall into the trap of finding somewhere uncomfortable just to keep yourself awake. Your body isn’t going to forgive you easily, and you won’t be so keen to come back to your study space again. If you’re using a desk, make sure your chair is the right height and distance from the edge to maintain a good posture. Get comfortable (but don’t fall asleep… obviously).
Crack out the tunes… but not all of them.
For some of us, music can be a great study tool, preventing us from getting distracted by everyday sounds of the house, of our phones, or by people or cars passing by outside. However, certain music has better influences than others.
It’s been proven that ambient music is much better for stimulating our brains and giving us a boost in concentration. This means, music without lyrics. Some enjoy classical music, and movie scores can be a great way to switch off from lyrics while enjoying good tunes.
If you’re just looking for background noise, however, then ambient sound creators are incredibly useful.
Best of all, if you’re a Harry Potter fan, check out asmr rooms on YouTube and study to the sounds of Hogwarts library or the common room of your favourite House.
I hope this helped you guys to decide where your study space for the rest of term is going to be. Getting your study space right is the first step to effective studying all year round.
See you on Sunday.
Sweet studying!
