Welcome to Africa

This video tribute is to the SAFS Summer 2015 class, you were the first to come on this magnificent journey with us and explore Southern Africa. This song is written by Randal Arsenault (aka Dr. Zoo), the director and lead instructor of SAFS, who is a world musician in his free time. 

In the song you will hear “Sawubona”which means “hello’ and “Unjani” which mean “how are you”. On the first day of class Dr. Arsenault got out his guitar and got all of the students singing along, after that point I don't think anyone forgot the local Swazi greeting!

Learn more about Module 2: Marine Ecology in Tofo, Mozambique. This one month module offers students the opportunity to get credit for BIOL 361 and BIOL 495. In this module students will complete an Open Water or Advanced Open Water Scuba course, go on research dives, ocean safaris, humpback whale monitoring and learn Portuguese...oh and did I mention you get to live on a beautiful beach in Mozambique!

Hangberg Tour and Cleanup

Last week our BIOL 495 students spent three afternoons visiting the local coloured township Hangberg. Within walking distance from Hout Bay Backpackers, where our students are staying, is the community of Hangberg. Upon first look, Hangberg is a residential and family community like any other; colourful brick houses adorn the street with stunning views of Hout Bay harbour. However, as we strolled through the streets of this township our tour guide Jacobus Mathews, showed us and told us about the many unseen realities of Hangberg. During the apartheid regime in South Africa people were racial segregated and as a result communities such as Imizamo Yethu (the black township) and Hangberg (the coloured township) were established. Although, there exists some formal housing in both communities there is a significant amount of informal settlements throughout the community. Many of these informal homes do not have water, electricity or sewage. 

The current population of Hangberg is estimated at about 28,800 people and is affected by a very high unemployment rate. As we walked through the community Jacobus, who is a pastor, counsellor and leader in his community discussed some of the impacts that poverty and the legacy of apartheid have on his community. We were shocked to hear that the HIV/AIDS rate in Hangberg is estimated to be about 50%. In addition, Jacobus discussed many issues that youth face such as teenage pregnancy, drug abuse of methamphetamine with youth starting as young as 9 or 10 years old. As we walked through the community we saw the many informal houses and met community members. As a component of their Community Service Learning outcomes of their BIOL 495 course, students engaged in a community cleanup. Our students spent Thursday and Friday afternoon collecting rubbish in the community. This gave the students not only the opportunity to help cleanup but also to meet people and learn more about the community. Through their handwork, students collected over 40 bags of rubbish each day.

This quote adorns the walls and artisans at Original T-Bag Designs, in Hout Bay; a fitting quote given the purpose of this community based business. Started over 10 years by Jill Heyes as a means of training, employing and empowering local women in the nearby township of Imizamo Yethu. Original T-Bag Designs, is a business that repurposes used tea bags for use in art pieces. The tea bags are sent to them from all around the world, they are then dried, ironed and painted. The employees will take the dried tea bags home and create original designs on the dried bags and then they resell them back to the company for additional income. Each tea bag design is original and each artist has a different style, the employees are also encouraged to come up with their own original designs and products from the repurposed tea bags. 

The purpose of visiting of Original T-Bag Designs, was for our students to see the impact of community based businesses on the well-being of local residents of Imizamo Yethu. As a part of their BIOL 495, course students are required to research topics related to the concept of “One Health”, this visit certainly fit in with the research topic of gender equality, that one of our groups is researching. It also showed our students the impact training, support and employment can have on the lives of people. Recycling and Waste Management, a community based study

On Tuesday afternoon, two of our students went to meet Natalie, manager of Dino’s Beach Bar, who is also involved in recycling and community based environmental projects. As a component of BIOL 361: Marine Ecology, students are required to interview at least three people in the community involved in their community research topic area. In many marine environments rubbish ends up in the ocean. These students are researching recycling and waste management with respect to marine ecology and consevation and had the opportunity to see what can be done to recycle and repurpose old bottles.  From this visit the students were able to not only observe the amount of waste that is created from old bottles but also see the possibilities of what can be created from the rubbish and how the profits can be reinvested and help in social and economic development within the local community.
