Iād just like to remind you lovely people to send your prayers/donations out to those affected by the Las Vegas attack. What happened is so scary and sad; I have no words. I hope you guys are alright <3
Hey, itās been a while since Iāve sat down and actually put the effort into writing something. With that said, Iām super excited for school to start (quarter system, so we start late september) and have been thinking about my job as a Residential Assistant and my past experiences. I figured my experience could be used to help the incoming students figure out how to handle college life.Ā
⦾ roommate living ⦾
your roommate is going to be the first person you will most likely interact with. be civil with them, and just see how you feel around them. the housing office puts people together that they think will get along based solely on the information that you post about yourself on your housing application. if you get along: congratulations you have a new friend! if you donāt get along: be civil and accept them as your roommate. make sure to set some ground rules that the both of you can agree on in terms of cleanliness, sleeping schedules, noise, etc.Ā
⦾ life away from home ⦾
call your mom/dad/brother/guardian. let them know you love and miss them, it makes a worldās difference. send cards on birthdays. keep in touch with your old friends, but make sure youāre still giving attention to the people around you.
⦾ chores/responsibility ⦾
make a chores list. stick to it! try to enforce your housemates/roommates to stick to it as well. some chores include: vacuum, take out trash, empty fridge out, clean kitchen, clean bathroom, or whatever other chore you see needing to be done.
⦾ balancing social & school ⦾
itās college! the studyblr community tends to shy away from drinking/smoking/partying because theyāre not seen as productive or studious things, and there are pardoned. iām going to tell you now that itās okay to experiment and try new things. as long as you are productive, and getting good grades, itās okay to let loose from time to time and have wine night with the ladies. get your work done, and reward yourself with some self care and fun.
⦾ list of things you should have ⦾
hygiene: shower shoes, shower caddy, robe, toothbrush/toothpaste, hairbrush, face wash/ face care, towerls, neosporin/bandages,Ā room: standing mirror, bed stilts, storage space, blankets, hangers, desk light, umbrella, water bottle, microwave, mini-fridge, laptop, backpack, posters, bedding,Ā cleaning: laundry detergent, dryer sheets, clorox wipes, laundry basket
⦾ GO TO CLASS ⦾
want to pass college? go to class. thatās literally the key to winning at college. if you go to call your classes, ask questions in class, and talk to your teacher after class about quick questions you have, youāre 90% of the way towards your A in the class.
⦾ study sessions ⦾
study sessions are a good excuse to make friends in your classes and get some studying done. the best study method is when you explain a concept to a fellow student that doesnāt understand the concepts. teaching is the best way to master content material.
⦾ organize your notes YOUR WAY ⦾
i personally enjoy using OneNote for classes that rely heavily on lecture notes, things that the teacher says, and powerpoint presentations. if that class is more math or science or diagram based, i tend to use pen and paper. after class, go through all your notes and re-write them (or at least review them) and clarify things that you may have left ambiguous.
⦾ MSI/tutoring ⦾ Ā
my school offers MSI (Modified Supplemental Instruction) which is where students who have taken the class and passed tutor you. itās free and all you have to do is show up. there are also tons of tutoring options, and if you canāt find any, iām positive that your teacher could point you in the right direction. if you donāt understand a concept, you better get your ass to a tutoring session or a teachers office hours.
⦾ contacting teachers ⦾
on the first day of class, make sure you go up and introduce yourself to the instructor. if you have questions in class that are not apparent from the lecture: form your question, raise your hand, and ask your question. make sure youāre going to your teachers office hours at least 5 times a quarter (and more if youāre on semester). teachers get a lot of emails, but they also enjoy when you send articles that are relevant to the coursework (this also works for teachers youāve had in the past). Teachers are your gateway to opportunity. If they know your name, you are the first on their mind when people are looking to hire students.Ā Ā Ā
