I’m so ready for this visit to be over. My girlfriend’s grandmother is driving us both crazy. She’s stressing us out so much that it’s making us physically sick. My blood pressure is really high and my girlfriend is sick to her stomach. 

I’m embarrassed about it because it seems silly, but one of my triggers is broken fingernails. It’s not that they gross me out or that they make me cringe. It’s that the sight of them, or even having them described to me will cause me to have a panic attack. 

Yesterday, we were all in the car together and my girlfriend’s grandmother started going on and on about her broken fingernail. (Just remembering this is making me feel panicky). 

I said, “Please stop. I’m sorry, I know this is silly, but I have a phobia. Please don’t talk about your broken nail anymore.” 

She ignored me, kept talking about it, and then shoved it in my face. 

I was in tears by the time we finally parked the car and I was able to get out. 

She did it again today. I almost feel like she’s doing it on purpose.

you know what’s awesome? getting low-key triggered every single time i see an older white man with white/grey longish hair! every. single. fucking. time. wowiee zowiee!

maybe you’re thinking, well that is rather specific i bet there aren’t too many older white men out there who vaguely resemble saruman -- and you’d be right, there aren’t, but actually! even being triggered like this once in a blue moon is still one time too many!!

last year i had to spend an entire weekend conference with someone who strongly resembled the slimestreak who’s responsible for this stupid trigger, and it was awful! especially given that the man, the person who was not slimestreak, was really quite pleasant and also bemused about why i kept jumping when i saw him!

so, you know, now the rest of my day needs to be carefully constructed to be both distracting and comforting and that’s really hard to do when you’re already exhausted and on the verge of tears!
