Warnings: drowning, war (kind of Dunkirk spoilers but not really)
Description: soulmate AU in Dunkirk where you are Alex’s soulmate and meet each other on a ship
lol the title is based on like the very end but I couldn’t come up with anything okay?
I wonder how many of us here will make it out alive.
That was all you could think of, standing below deck on the ship heading away from the shores of Dunkirk. All the while you were smiling at each and every soldier who walked past you, handing out warm cups of tea left, right and centre. Ship after ship had been sunk as they tried to evacuate Dunkirk. It would come as a shock to no one if this very ship was next to go down.
Subconsciously you traced the letters on your left wrist for the thousandth time. You had started training to become an army nurse as soon as they started enlisting soldiers in your hometown. You just couldn’t stay at home doing nothing while the war was being fought - it wasn’t in your nature. You had to be out there with the soldiers, making a difference.
The fear you felt now was not a fear of death, it was a fear of not getting the chance to live out the life you were supposed to have. A life with your soulmate.
Everyone had the words written on their left wrist. No one could explain how it happens, but everyone knows what it means. The words on your wrist are the first words your soulmate ever says to you. The words printed on your wrist, you were yet to hear.
The idea of hearing these words from your soulmate, your one true love, is what kept you going. When you walked into war zones, you thought of hearing those words. When you were treating injuries that would make a grown man empty the contents of his stomach, you thought of hearing those words. When another one of your patients turned into a corpse, you thought of hearing those words. When you thought you couldn’t keep going, you thought of hearing those words. Everything you did to keep going was with the hope that you would one day hear those words.
Despite your mind being flooded with these thoughts, you did not expect to hear those words. Not while you were surrounded by hundreds of ragged soldiers, in the middle of evacuating Dunkirk.
“Miss, can you pass me another cup o’ that tea?”
Your head snapped in the direction of the door, where he was standing. One of the most beautiful boys you had ever seen. You stared at him in shock, struggling to form a response with your mouth hanging open.
“Say that again,” you demanded, disbelieving.
Now it was his turn to stare at you in shock. The soldier he had been talking with looked on in confusion. You took a step towards him, and he quickly pulled up his left sleeve to reveal the words you knew would be there. You followed suit, revealing the words he had just spoken to you. A look of understanding passed across the face of the soldier he had been talking to.
“You’re my soulmate,” you said, barely able to control your giddy joy, your morbid mood from earlier long since forgotten. You almost forgot exactly where you were for a moment, you were so overcome with happiness. The bleakness of your current situation somehow seemed distant, despite it being right before your eyes.
“I’m Alex,” he introduced himself.
“I’m-”
With a bang, the reality of your situation came crashing back to you.
As soon as the torpedo hit the side of the boat, water came pouring into the enclosed space below deck. Within seconds you were all completely submerged.
No. This wasn’t supposed to be it. You were supposed to have years with your soulmate. Decades. Not mere seconds before you both met your end.
In the darkness, you felt a hand grab your wrist. Through the water you could just make out Alex. Together, you tried to swim to the surface of the water. Before you could get far, you were brought to a halt. Your dress was snagged on something you couldn’t see. You tried pulling on it, to no avail. Alex had since noticed you had become stuck and was floating slightly above you, still holding onto your wrist.
Suddenly, a light shone through the water as the door above you opened. The boy Alex had been talking with earlier swam past you to the door. You tried to take your wrist back and make Alex let go of you so he could swim out, but he refused to let go of you.
He swam back down to where your dress was stuck. Your lungs were burning from a lack of oxygen. All you wanted to do was release the breath you had been holding. Black spots were beginning to cloud your vision when Alex ripped your dress free and grabbed you by the waist.
He kicked furiously towards the light he knew to be the door as you were slipping into unconsciousness. Just as your body was about to give in and allow your lungs to be filled with seawater, you made it to the surface.
You gasped for air, coughing and spluttering all over Alex as he kept you above sea level. After a few seconds, you regained some composure and began to tread water on your own, struggling through your skirts. He led you towards a rowboat, his arms still around you as you swam, tugging you up when you started to bob down.
“Let us on the boat,” Alex demanded.
“If we let you on, the boat will capsize. You’ll have to hold onto a rope and swim after us to shore,” a captain told him.
“Come on, you must have room for at least one more. She’s a lady, a nurse.”
“I’m sorry, but I can’t.” The pair of them continued to argue, but the captain wasn’t budging.
“It’s fine Alex, I can swim it. We just need to get going,” you finally spoke up. The two of them were wasting time arguing when they could all be headed to shore right now.
“But-”
“I’ll be fine,” you assured him.
The three of you swam and swam, clinging onto the rope that was attached to the boat for dear life. It seemed like it would never end. Your legs were numb and you thought the taste of salt was never going to leave your mouth again after this. But finally, you reached the shore.
The three of you stumbled to land as the sun began to rise. As soon as you reached the edge of the water, you fell to the ground, lying on your back so you could face the grey sky.
“By the way,” you turned to Alex, “my name is Y/N.”
And despite it all, despite everything about the current situation you were in, he laughed. He laughed a hysterical laugh, and it wasn’t long before you had joined him. The two of you laughed and laughed on the beach of Dunkirk, with the two other soldiers in your company silent as the grave. Slowly your laughs faded into smiles and those faded into tears.
Alex sat up with the other two soldiers, each of their harrowed faces mirroring each other. Alex tugged you towards his lap and you rested your head on his thighs. You continued to cry, but he brushed your tears away as they fell.
Ever so softly, he began to sing you a lullaby, and you drifted off to sleep.
REQUEST : Can you please do a one where the reader forgets his birthday? - Anonymous
I know I have been MIA in writing for a while, but I had lost all the motivation to write. But I’m back and I really hope you enjoy this one! So.. ENJOY! xx
You and Harry had been together for five years. His birthday was never a huge deal for him, but for you, you needed it to be a great deal. He always felt special with you. The two of you treated each other very well. So when it was his birthday week, he thought that even though for him his birthday wasn’t a big deal, you would surprise him by throwing a small party with all of his close friends and family.
You were a successful woman. A professor at a well known university and were doing well for yourself. Harry was very proud of you and what you had achieved for yourself. Sure, these days you were kinda more busy than ever before but he knew that you would remove some time for him on his birthday.
Sunlight escaped through the window straight pass the curtains onto his eyelids, he groaned as he fluttered his eyes open. He was laying down on his stomach as he searched for the specific warm body next to him. When he felt an empty space, he fully opened his heavy eyelids and turned his head left to right his search of you. That’s when he heard the dropping of a steel utensil and concluded that you must be in the kitchen. He smiled and sat up to stretch his stiff body. His naked feet touched the floor and just as he bent down to collect his boxers he stopped. A smirk appeared on his face as he stood up and walked down the stairs and into the kitchen.
You back was facing him as you were trying to make breakfast. He walked up to you and wrapped his arms around you from behind. You yelped in surprise but calmed down after releasing the familiar touch of your love. He nuzzled his nose in your neck, inhaling your sweet scent. You turned around and blew out a whistle as he stood there in front of you in all his glory.
“Wow, someone is happy today.” you said. He giggled and hugged you again. You wrapped yours around his waist and quickly gave his bum a squeeze, and laughed when you heard his not so manly squeak.
“Stop!” He pulled your hands back to his chest and smiled at you. He leaned down to kiss you which you gladly reciprocated. You hummed in satisfaction and pulled away.
“Okay honey, I’ve got to go. I made you your favorite banana pancakes, and the OJ is in the fridge, can you please help yourself with the rest? I’m really gonna be late if I don’t leave now.” you asked. He frowned at you as you walked away from him. That moment he realised you were in your work clothes. He thought you must’ve taken a day off today. You guys hadn’t had much time together lately. With all the promotions with his latest solo album and the movie, and you being extra busy with work load, you hadn’t given a lot of time to each other. He thought today would be different.
“You have work today, baby?” He asked as he covered himself with a robe he found on the back of the chair against the dining table.
“Of course I have work today, honey. It’s a Tuesday. I have to conduct an important test today. Didn’t I tell you?” You absent mindedly ask as you stuffed all the things you needed in your tote.
“No.. No you didn’t.” He said with a small tone.
You walked over to him and kissed his cheek, “I’m sorry, must’ve slipped my mind. I can’t not go in today. It’s far too important. We don’t have any special plans today, do we? I don’t think so.” you rubbed of the lipstick mark you left on his cheek.
“So we are doing nothing today? Like… you know a dinner or summat? Just the two of us?..” He lifted one of his mouth and he squinted his eyes towards you. He observed you as you ran from one side of the room to another.
You let out a heavy breath as you finally found the file you were searching for, you looked at him as your brushed the small piece of hair that was in front of your eyes b behind your ear. “Dinner? On a Tuesday night? Honey, I can’t. You know this week will be too hectic for me.”
“But today-” you looked at your watch and gasped. You ran to get your keys from the key holder and quickly ran back to Harry and gave him a peck on his lips.
“Can we please talk once ’m back? I’m so gonna be late today, H.” You didn’t even wait for his reply as you slammed the door shut. Harry stood there on the spot and thought about the quick moment that just passes the two of you.
You had forgotten his birthday.
For him it usually wouldn’t have been a big deal, but having sensed all the distant moments between the two of you, he was a bit sad. After him being away from you for more than one an half month, he thought you would’ve remembered his birthday. He thought today would’ve been a romantic night where you would’ve let him cling to you all day and watch The Notebook with him for the millionth time then make love to him all night, shower him with your love, just like you did everyday, but your birthdays made it even more special to shower each other with their love.
Just when he sulked back into his room and flopped down on the bed his phone rang. He groaned and took a hold of his phone. But a giant smile appeared on his face when he saw “Baby” on his caller ID.
“So I guess you finally remembered...” he sassed.
“Oh my god, yes! I’m sorry, sweetie.” you replied hurriedly.
He laughed and shook his head, “It’s fine, baby. I’m just happy that you remembered.... So.. you coming back home to me?” he chuckled as he flopped back on the bed, but this time happily.
“Come back home to you?...Umm.. Why do I need to come back home when I just forgot to cut off the water heater after my bath?” you questioned from the other side. His face dropped at your reply.
He sat back up abruptly, “What?!”
“Babe, I forgot to cut out the water heater after my shower, you did it for me, right?”
He closed his eyes and sighed. He stood up, walked into the bathroom and cut out the water heater, “Yeah.. Yeah of course.”
“Thank you, honey. I gotta go, I’ll talk to you later, okay?” You said.
“Yeah..sure.” he gave a dreaded replied.
“Are you okay, Harry?” you asked as he could you shut your car door.
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“Okay, I love you!” he smiled a half smile and nodded.
“I love you, baby.” Once you hung up the phone, his phone started to get filled with notification from twitter, calls and messages from friends and family.
Looked like everyone remembered his birthday. Everyone, expect the only person whom he really wanted with him right now.
