International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC) project aims to mutate every gene in the mouse genome. Some argue that a central repository will improve our knowledge of mouse biology and should help to avoid irreproducible results found when transgenic mice are made in individual labs. While helpful, I wonder if the IMPC is worth the cost to generate these animals and to maintain them. Furthermore some genes do not perform the same function in different cell types. How will these differences be reconciled; evermore specific gene manipulations and conditional mutants? Where will it end?
