Its official: i will always like sub anime over dub anime.

I started watching kuromukuro the dub version on netflix. The longer i listened to the character voices, the more they just didnt match and sound right. So i looked up the sub version and I'm not kidding you, it sounded perfect. Im cursed from ever watching dub anything i guess.

My watch of GX is going a bit slow due to watching it in sub...

But I definitely made the right choice:

Upon seeing this, I knew there was no way the dub didn’t change this so I watched the scene in dub and:

4Kids had the fucking gall to edit out a dead body. They did it in the original with Marik stabbing his father to death with the Millennium Rod but I think this upsets me more. With the Marik scene, I sort of get toning it down a little since a stabbing is pretty brutal and it literally showed blood but THIS?! There’s no gore or anything! The Lion King showed a dead body years before this came out and that’s aimed at kids! Changing “he was killed” to “he was kidnapped” does nothing but make the consequence less permanent and make Edo’s rage and desire for revenge less understandable. I felt sympathy for Edo in the sub and felt the weight of the situation but in the dub he kind of comes off as a brat. He didn’t seem as traumatized or twisted by a desire for vengeance because of the story change and the actual editing of the scene in the dub makes it seem like it’s not as big of a deal as the sub makes it feel.

Also they changed Judai’s friends worriedly yelling his name and “bro” (which Sho and Kenzan call him) to “Jaden lost... his cards!” Which

A) Makes it seem like they’re more concerned about him losing than him

and B) Just sounds fucking stupid, especially with how flat the line delivery was.

This whole thing really gets on my fucking nerves. I hate when kids’ shows/movies try to hide the idea of death. I understand if the thing in question is aimed at really little kids but when characters are literally dying or almost dying on screen in a General Audience picture, avoiding the words “kill” and “die” or finding some dumbass substitute like the Yugioh dubs do makes me hurl. YOU ARE LITERALLY SHOWING DEATH SAY THE FUCKING WORD.

The GX season 2 finale was weird as shit

And I loved it.

I mean, a dinosaur with a bandanna comes out of a teenage boy and helps a superhero reject destroy a satellite that was going to destroy the entire world all while best boy Judai is dueling a dude who was taken over by the light of destruction who sees the future (and was played by Dio according to my sibling the Jojo fan). It’s so absurd but so damn fun at the same time that I can’t complain.

Honestly, I liked season 2 a lot overall. It was a definite improvement over season 1, having its overarching plot(s) start much sooner and really developing the characters well, both new and old. Sho, Manjome, and Cronos of all characters got some good development this season. As for the new characters, Edo had a complete arc alongside Judai’s and Saio can join the list of great Yugioh villains, he was a very fun villain with a convincing redemption arc. He had some similarities to Marik but not to the point where I would call it a rip-off. Of course, this season had its issues. This season had too many overarching plots going on, especially in the first half, and they intersect in weird ways and just get confusing. Also, Misawa While it’s funny that they lampshade this, them forgetting about Misawa is a problem. He was a major character last season, one of Judai’s greatest rivals, and he’s been pushed aside and underdeveloped even though they had a set up where Misawa could’ve gotten more attention. There was an idea, there was a set-up, but there was no pay off. Him stripping and running around nude was not a pay-off, it was weird and awkward. I’m willing to roll with this show’s weirdness 90% of the time but this was that 10% where I’m like “...stop.”

Anyways, season 2 was overall a good season. I’m looking forward to season 3 since it’s the one people have specifically mentioned to me as being really good and I vaguely know about Yubel. I know that they exist, are a genderless alien, and might be a yandere that's into Judai. Maybe. Not sure on that one but I'm interested to see.

I finally finished season 1 of GX

Yeah, this took me a while and I have a few reasons for that. Unlike the original Yugioh, I’m watching GX in sub, because the dub of Yugioh pissed me off that much and I wanted the full story of GX. The downside to that is that I can’t write while I watch watching a sub. The reason my watch of the original Yugioh went so fast was because I would put on the slower parts (like the Virtual Arc for instance) on as background while I wrote. Meanwhile, when GX was slow, I watched fewer episodes.

Still, I am interested enough in GX to continue to season 2 when I get to it. This show seems more... relaxed than the original Yugioh so far. There was the Seven Stars arc, which was pretty good, but the show overall is not constantly on the move at tournaments, a lot of it is just the characters going about their lives at the school, but the characters are interesting enough to make those filler plots worthwhile. So far, my favourite characters are Manjome, Judai, and Asuka.
