Two bad dinners at the local Subway the last two times I’ve been there; going to have to give that Subway a rest for the next little while. Too bad because I’ve liked going there for years.
(Difficult to mess up a sub sandwich but they’re doing it)
Gene’s Grinders, 800 S Myrtle Ave, Monrovia, CA 91016
Gene’s Grinders has been serving grinders (submarine sandwiches) since 1954. They bake the bread (French roll) on site, every morning. The bread is hand-rolled. A small roll is about 6 inches and a large is 12”. Choose from hot and cold grinders, including homemade meatballs, world famous pastrami, roast beef, Italian cold cuts, turkey, tuna, etc. They also have daily specials, sides (chips, fries), and drinks.
Order from one window and pick up from the other window. There is no indoor seating but they have a covered patio with picnic benches.
Roast pork sandwich, small ($12.75): The French roll is very fresh and softer than average. If you want something hefty, firm, and chewy, this isn’t the roll for you. I liked the roll and the flavor of the sliced roast pork (simple seasoning, you could taste the pork). It tasted homemade and was tender. The shredded iceberg and tomato slices were fresh. It was a simple sandwich but very fresh. I would have liked some pickles, mustard, and onion – but those things are available upon request. The sandwich was 7.5 inches by 4 inches.
The roast pork sandwich is only available on Mondays. Service was friendly and my sandwich was ready in under 5 minutes. It was expertly wrapped in two sheets of butcher paper and cut in half. They know what they’re doing.
While I was waiting for the sandwich, a regular came up. He said he gets the same thing every day – the turkey sandwich. They did know his order, but he had colleagues with him, so that’s why he mentioned the turkey sandwich. They probably roast the turkey?
