If you want an idea what more authentic oldschool hacking language sounds like, there is an absolutely ANCIENT webpage called the Jargon File (seems to have been updated from the early 80s up through 2004), aka the New Hacker’s Dictionary, that kept a record. It’s not far from Gibson’s idea but if anything it sounds even dorkier, peppered with coding terms and prehistoric memes

McDonalds Renovation

I know nobody is going to McDonalds for the ambiance (and I’m probably part of that last generation who doesn’t mind going to McDonalds) but check out this new renovation to the McDonalds by my work.

Chipboard as wall treatment, no view of the employees working, weird limited seating to discourage hanging out, lots of empty space, almost no counter staff.

This reno just finished at the same time the school year ended. The high school students who frequent this McDonalds will not love this when they’re back in September.

something I really enjoy is that I've now seen like 4 or 5 variations of roughly this same video, all slightly different in their angles and timing while obviously being the exact same bunny and room, implying that this is a consistent and frequent behavior for this bunny instead of just a funny thing it did once that got caught on camera. I wish I could have as much raw unfiltered enthusiasm for anything as this little rabbit has for its dinnertime

I think they add an important element of randomness to the environment. My father in law bought 6 or 7 boxes of the Selena Gomez Oreos so he could set a Selena Gomez Oreo alarm to go off mid workday and then say to his coworkers, "Oh, my Selena Gomez Oreo alarm is going off!" and unearth from his locker his 6 or 7 boxes of Selena Gomez Oreos so he and his coworkers could distribute them around the neonatal ICU ward where they work. He said it livened up an otherwise extremely dreary day.

Got sad today because two sixth grade students shared some inside joke that was so funny they collapsed against each other in giggles and I was hit with a massive wave of “I’ll never be young again.”

Got happy today because one of those same sixth graders (they’re seventh graders now) approached me after seeing me have a irrepressible giggle with a friend and said “you and [my friend] are just like me and [his friend], you can’t stop laughing.”

This is genuinely so important. If the only people a kid can look up to are serious and authoritative 100% of the time, kids start to assume that they have to abandon whimsy, imagination, and silliness to grow up and to be taken seriously. Don’t do it. Stay silly.
