- Refers to a phenomenon in which light enters a translucent or semi-transparent material and scatters beneath the surface before being absorbed or exiting the material.
- Causes the soft, glowing effect seen in human skin, wax, marble, etc in harsh lighting
- In the art world, SSS is crucial to creating a realistic and believable rendering of translucent and semi-transparent

Here's a paint over of a screenshot from the recent "The Story of Linda the Cow" from Taskmaster! Digital oils, tenebrism up the wazoo, lovely glowy ears and glowy outline (subsurface scattering and rim lighting, respectively).
With the help of two wonderful people I got together a couple references of subsurface scattering (Light passing through skin) of different skin tones for artists to use. Sharing these with everyone with permission so you too can reference them
