I‘m not sure if it’s intentional or not, but there’s a line in the PHM book (when Grace is marvelling at the beauty of planet Adrian) that is so fucking funny to read if you know how he ended up on the ship.
For some context, this is in the chapter that comes right after we learn that he’s only good at EVAs because he was being used to test the spacesuit’s capability for EVA astrophage sampling, not because he had astronaut training. So you get that bombshell which is immediately followed by,
“aw man I wish I could remember the beautiful view of Earth from when I was AWAKE and PRESENT for the launch of the Hail Mary :) at which time I was presumably PRESENT and AWAKE enough to watch, am I right guys? Did you catch that? I said I’m sure glad that I was PRESENT and AWAK-”
