I went to see Godspeed You Black Emperor at the Brighton Dome on Monday. How to describe it? It was like the auditory equivalent of an Adam Curtis documentary. For nearly two hours, I sat (couldn’t stand, too intense) transfixed in both senses of the word: 1) Cause (someone) to become motionless with horror, wonder, or astonishment. 2) Pierce with a sharp implement or weapon. I felt like a butterfly, stunned by ether and pinned to a specimen board. If you’ve read “His Dark Materials” I felt like the band weirdest the subtle knife, but what was revealed when they pierced the skin of now and opened it up was not another world, but pure chaos.
