Is a soil mix of around 50% perlite and 50% potting soil ok for cactus/Succulents? With some lava rock in as well..I heard sand isn't good to use, so for now I'm doing this but I'm unsure if it's good for the plant or not.
During the growing season when they’re getting regular water, potting soil is usually okay for most succulents, a bit less so for cactus. The issue with potting soil is that it usually contains peat, which is hydrophobic and will repel water if left to dry completely — which is an important part of the watering process for succulents and cacti. It also tends to dry into a solid chunk, which ends up choking any delicate roots.
HOWEVER — since you’re adding extra pumice and lava rock to the mix the soil will def drain quicker and retain water. As long as you repot them into fresh mix regularly, you should have no issues. 💚
