Molly smiled and shook her head before taking another lick of the ice-cream. “Nope… it’s yours… I’m sharing…” she teased. “And you’re very sweet when you get caught up in your words you know”

He smirked as she took another lick of his ice-cream. She seemed nice. And a hell of a lot happier since the last time he saw her. Speaking of which...

"Did you... Um... Find your ring? Sorry I had to rush off like that..."

He grinned wide, holding the icecream as far away from the woman as possible. After a moment, he lowered his lashes in an almost coy fashion and offered her the cone. 

"Y'can... Have more if you want?"

There’s the quiet of the water around them and for a moment he feels like he might actually be floating, floating on the water that surrounds him. And that feels like such an easy feeling, calming. He actually feels okay.

His dad is there, a low steady voice instructing him. And he can’t recall another time that his dad was more present than he is then. A movement of his hand, a feeling of pressure on his back. His hand, steadying him.

He’s either seven or eight. The colors are vivid, greens and browns, and above all, more than the rest blue. The smell gets to him, invoking a calm. He doesn’t know what peace really means, not  yet at least.

Right now there’s only the motion of his hand now as the line drops into the water, swimming on the clear surface. And he can see blurred reflections on the surface of the water.

And there’s the pull on the end of the line, there’s the smile that he won’t quite remember later. His dad so rarely smiles, and if he had any in reserves they were never for him. Someone else, maybe, someone else Will has yet to meet.

But then he doesn’t know that. He only knows what he sees. He’s too young to see beyond that, too young to be tainted by the cracks that he’ll harbor later. There’s only the reflections and the smells, and that gentle tug on the line accompanied by the hand on his back.

She had come after the scars, after the bruises and the illnesses, after all the hurt. She had come when the darkness had found a settling place. She had come through when there was hesitation and pain. She had remained in the storms that had passed. She had been shelter.

There was a painting of her left scattered in his mind, tossed around so that she might touch every part. There were a lot of tainted pieces, parts broken off, sharp and dangerous. But she had approached. And holding on she had loved.

Love. The word was like a pain in the middle of his chest. A silent gnawing for which there is no healing. He loved Molly, he loves her with all the scars he wears, with all the aches, and even with the demons that race wildly in his mind. He even tries to love her with those cold isolated parts that never let him relish, never let him fall back into something. He loves with all his fear.

He wants to hold her up. She’s not wilting, not the fading flower that she feels like underneath his hands and mouth. Not that frail. She has an innate strength that seems to be laces around the thin bones of her body.

And he loves that about her, too. The strength, the way she holds herself up. He’s so used to saving people. He’s grown used to the rattling expectation he’s made for himself in his own mind.

But Molly wants him to fall away with her, not into the shadows or the far away places that no one can find. She wants him to settle into the now, the present. With the calming waves around them and the sound of her heart guiding him. Molly has no expectations, no reservations. She’s a resting place, the only place he finds comfort. Molly feels like home.
