These Cape Gannet (Morus capensis) will fly 150km -170km out to sea to fish for their chicks, and they then return to the Bird Island Nature Reserve to feed them. There are 26500 gannets on the island which is actually just an extension of the mainland, as access is along a pier from the harbor in Lambert’s Bay. The numbers are made up of breeding pairs, sub adults and chicks. I managed to capture this gannet early morning as it returned to the island. I liked the splayed feet and wingspread against the distant sea background.
