You can get a Korean breakfast starting at 7 AM without going to Koreatown. Head to Sun Nong Dan (which does have a location in Koreatown and a new one in Rowland Heights) for the $6.99 morning special. The morning special includes a bowl of beef soup (your choice, 4 varieties: sulung tang, ox knee soup, beef brisket with dried cabbage soup, spicy beef & leek soup), banchan, rice (your choice of white or multigrain) and tea (or water). The lunch/dinner menu includes soups, casseroles and big BBQ platters. Sun Nong Dan is known for sullungtang (beef soup) and galbi jjim.
* Yuk gae jang (spicy beef & leek soup): The soup tasted like it had been cooked for a long time. The leeks were super soft and the beef (brisket?) was mostly in shreds with a few larger pieces. The beefy broth had that typical red pepper paste flavor though it wasn’t that spicy. The leeks added sweetness. Served piping hot, the soup was very comforting. The rice was mushy (overcooked) and the banchan were good (napa cabbage, radish, onions in soy sauce).
The restaurant is big and new looking, with most of the tables set up for cooking casseroles. There’s also a call button. Utensils and condiments (salt, pepper, green onions) were kept at each table. The credit card minimum is $10.
