Portrait Sumatran Tiger by Martien Uiterweerd Via Flickr: Three very rare and endangered Sumatran Tigers live in Burgers Zoo, Arnhem, the Netherlands. The female Sumatran Tigers (Hujan, Bayu and Deru) are born in late September 2006 in Chessington Zoo, great London, England. They were moved to Burgers Zoo where it is hoped they will continue the breeding of this endangered species. The Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) is a subspecies of tiger found on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The Sumatran Tiger is the smallest of all extant tiger subspecies. Male Sumatran Tigers average 204 cm (6 feet, 8 inches) in length from head to tail and weigh about 136 kg. Females average 198 cm (6 feet, 6 inches) in length and weigh about 91 kg. Its stripes are narrower than other subspecies of tigers' stripes, and it has a more bearded and maned appearance, especially the males. Its small size makes it easier to move through dense rain forests. Sumatran Tigers commonly prey on larger ungulates, like wild boar, tapir and deer, and sometimes also smaller animals, like fowl, and fish. According the Tiger Information Centre and the World Wildlife Fund there are no more than 500 of these tigers left in the wild with some estimates considerably lower. The continuing loss of habitat is intensifying the crises to save this tiger. _________________________________________________________________________________ In de Rimba (Aziatische landschap) van Burgers Zoo in Arnhem leven drie Sumatraanse Tijgers, de zusters Hujan, Bayu and Deru, geboren eind september 2006 in Chessington Zoo (regio Londen) in Engeland. Zodra de tijgerinnen geslachtsrijp zijn, zal er een mannetje komen en één of twee van de dames naar een ander dierenpark gaan. Op deze manier hoopt Burgers Zoo een bijdrage te leveren aan het behouden van deze zeldzame en ernstig bedreigde diersoort, zoals Burgers Zoo al uiterst succesvol is met de eveneens bedreigde Sri Lankaanse panters. De sumatraanse tijger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) is een ondersoort van de tijger die alleen voorkomt op Sumatra. Deze ondersoort is kleiner dan de andere ondersoorten en heeft een donkerbruine kleur. De mannetjes kunnen een totaallengte van 204 cm en een gewicht van 136 kg bereiken, de vrouwtjes 198 cm en 91 kg. Verder is de vacht donkeroranje. Het strepenpatroon bestaat vaak uit twee parallelle rijen. Vroeger kwam dit dier voor op heel Sumatra, maar tegenwoordig zijn er volgens het Tiger Information Centre en het Wereld Natuurfonds (WWF) nog maar 500 exemplaren over, waarvan 400 in het wild._________________________________________________________________________________ All rights reserved.
