The House On Lemon Tree Lane (2)
The man standing in the doorway looks tired, dark circles under his bloodshot eyes.
"Geeze, it's cold out here. Sorry to keep you waiting. Are you the investigator..." he pauses as if trying to remember something, "Gilroy, was it?"
You nod. "You can call me Pat if you like."
"Alright Pat. Come on in," he says, stepping to the side and gesturing for you to enter. "I'm Kent, though I think I told you that when we spoke on the phone?"
"You did, it's nice to meet you, Kent." You step into the warmth of the house. It's quite a nice place. Nice foyer with a staircase leading up to the second floor and an ornate looking hanging light fixture.
"Take off my shoes here?" you ask. You don't want to step off the gray entry rug and get the nice hardwood floor dirty with slush.
Kent nods, so you put your boots neatly next to the other pairs of shoes by the door. There's one pair that looks like it belongs to Kent, and a few pairs that look like they belong to a child.
Kent leads you into another room off the foyer that looks like a living room. The furniture is a bit sparse for the size of the room, but Kent mentioned that he had moved in recently, so he's probably still working on getting things set up. It looks nice so far, the green of the couch echoed in the leaves of the floral patterned area rug.
"Sorry about the mess," Kent apologizes as he picks up some dolls and sets them on the coffee table to be dealt with later. "Tif is usually better at picking up her stuff, but..."
"Tif?" you ask, choosing not to sit until invited.
"That's my daughter. She's the reason I called you. If it was just me, there's no way this fake haunting would work. I know ghosts aren't real and there's no way I'm going to get scared away," he says, sounding frustrated. He sighs. "But Tif is still just a kid. Of course she's going to be scared. Even someone breaking into the house to fake the haunting is a scary as hell possibility for her."
"Yeah, having strangers in your house with bad intentions isn't something a kid should have to deal with. Why don't we go over the facts of the case one more time so I can get started," you say.
"Sure," Kent nods. He gestures at the couch for you to sit down. He sits on the opposite end from you once you do.
"So, when did the 'haunting' start?"
