Happy Birthday, Melissa 💖💖💖
Sun dogs/parhelia are a phenomenon caused by the refraction and scattering of sunlight through ice crystals in cirrus clouds.

tagged by @triggerlil and @elleviral thank you guys so much!! some of the last lines from my little au that seems to be the only thing i've been able to work on lately lmao
The pads of John’s fingers are rough against Gale’s cheeks as he thumbs over a mark on one side, taking his time before doing the same on the other. John’s eyes are curious, and Gale knows without asking that he’s looking at the faded silvery lines of the scars on his cheeks.
“Kinda like you got your own sun dogs,” John murmurs thoughtfully, and Gale closes his eyes, listening to the soft wet sounds of his mouth as he speaks.
“Sure, if you say so,” Gale huffs with a laugh at John’s musings. Nothing more than inconsequential marks on his skin, a silly accident as a kid, and an even stupider one as an adult; far from being comparable to the refraction of light among ice crystals.
“Guess that means you’re the sun right in the middle, hm?” John teases, and Gale feels himself warm. The heat reaches out from his body, right into where his bare skin is pressed against John’s.

I was super excited, and surprised, to see that just about 40 minutes after my photos of the sun dogs and parhelion, when the sunset was starting, we STILL had at least one sun dog visible! (Seen through the uprights of the water tower.)
I'd never seen one during a sunset before. It definitely looked too bright and distinct to just be the sun catching the top of clouds, and it was in about the right place. (As mentioned in the previous post, sun dogs are rainbow reflections of the sun's light in very high, icy clouds. They usually appear on one or both sides of the sun, at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock, sometimes with a sun halo visible. With the lower clouds that moved in here, the sun halo can no longer be seen, nor can the other sun dog from earlier to the left of the sun; probably due to that cloud.)
It sounds a bit trite to say it, but I really enjoy seeing how a sunset progresses in ways I don't expect, or rather, in ways I can't exactly predict from the clouds I'm seeing at the start. Probably partly due to being unable to judge the varying altitude of the clouds, and what will catch the light and when. I wasn't sure what to expect from that very dark band of cloud, but was delighted by that suffused super-orange/red glow we got briefly, and then the rays at the end.
