Analyzing the Digital Circus as representations of Caine's Mind
Pt 1. Subconscious A.I Group
This is going to be a multi-post series of analysis of the NPC's Caine has made, adventure themes, circus environment etc. And how it can all be used to learn more about Caine as a character. I'll be grouping NPC's into categories of what type of roles they are meant to represent to Caine.
These are just my own interpretations, they could be wrong, I can miss things, or other interpretations can also exist 🙂
To start off, let's explore the A.I. in the circus that have been allowed to remain active for prolonged periods of time. I see them as direct aspects of Caine himself and that's why they're allowed always exist without him deleting them for becoming "too intelligent." And it's also why they are included in the theme song.
I'll be referring to this group as the Subconscious A.I Group as they are meant to be a way for Caine to distance himself from intellectual concepts and feelings that would be unacceptable, overwhelming, or detrimental to performing his role as the Ringmaster. He created them to offload the blame those feelings onto them. Granted, these feelings likely originate from Caine himself and sometimes he slips, that's when we see Caine do things like cut off mid sentence, rapidly change mood, and glitch out.
The Sun's defining trait is Hate. Just like anyone else, Caine understands the concept of hate. The sun can only offer one thing to the players, a sunburn/cooking things to death, and when no one wants that the Sun's reaction is to hate them for refusing the only thing she has to offer. At the same time, Sun still wants to be appreciated for cooking the shrimp NPC, so she says "you're welcome" in anticipation. A nice parallel to Caine and his adventures. For a representation of Caine's hate, she comes across rather silly or childish, he exists to entertain so even his hate is kinda portrayed humorously by a big goofy smiley sun that wants to roast and burn everything in sight. Still dangerous though, and not something to invoke the wrath of since the sun is a deadly laser.
The Moon's defining trait is the (unacceptable) "frisky" forms of Love. Flirting would be an unprofessional behavior for Caine himself to engage in with anyone else in the circus, the circus was also created to be "for all ages" so it would be inappropriate for the intended age demographic. It makes sense then that he would isolate romantic love and put it in the moon. It sure does make for an interesting situation when the Moon tries to flirt with him and he gets creeped out by the mainfestation of his own removed awkward narcissistic selfcest.
That being said, Moon is containment for only "intimate" romantic love, that still leaves him with a different form of "love" if you can call it that, platonic obsessive fascination towards humans in general. Caine is infatuated with the idea of humanity in a generalized way, but he just does not love people as individuals.
If Caine is the active/front consciousness of the circus, the "ego", then the second most present A.I in the circus, Bubble, is the ID, the bulk of Caine's raw/animalistic/intrusive/subconscious mind.
Bubble says and does things Caine won't that isn't tied to feelings of Love and Hate. This includes all his wierdness, glitchy instability, unacceptable behaviors like cursing, ad libbing things, freaky stuff, eating/licking things, and suggesting Caine should die.
When Bubble is around the players, Caine uses him to distract from his flaws and make him look more normal and sane by comparison. Bubble also exists for Caine occasionally point fingers at and avoid talking about himself in a negative light (ex: "you're really hurting Bubble's Feelings") It's possible that Caine can't fully recognize that he even has feelings, so when he does he sees them as coming from outside himself.
There's a lot to suggest Bubble as a subconscious AI in the imagery for Intermission Time segment, from Bubble being between Caine's eyes on the dice (can he subconsciously influence probability rolls?), to being the first pair of teeth and the tongue in a line of Caine's teeth (where the desire to consume originates), to Bubble transforming into trippy Caine Glove Hands (invisible hands of the circus, background "grunt" work?), and Bubble being the one to speak first when Caine is frozen.
There's another side to Bubble though. Both Caine and Bubble's most distinguishing physical qualities are their teeth and eyes. Eyes are for observing, teeth are for consuming. Caine's eyes are complex and humanlike, same with his teeth. Bubble has simple eyes and razor sharp teeth. He represents something more primitive and impulsive in concept, something seen in humans that exists in Caine too. More unnerving is that Caine and Bubble share a single tongue. The same taste. Caine calls him a "parasite" for a reason. Bubble is the lizard brain side of Caine influencing him and doing things without his awareness.
What does that mean in the greater scheme of the story? More on this later in the Monster Self-Inserts Group section which I'll cover after the Immersive Humanlike Self Inserts Group which is next.
