Indrid stood atop a tall, rickety stool, running a bristle brush through the Alderking’s frayed mass of black hair. The texture reminded him of wheat spikes; it was brittle and dry, but soft. Being allowed to touch it was an exalting reward. Indrid did not know why it had always made him so nervous.
