Being different has always been something you didn’t want to be in a world where everyone was either Alpha, Beta, or Omega. You quit, didn’t know where you fitted yet. At the age of 12, it was clear that the universe hates you in some kinda way. It started when you started to see boys in a different light. They weren’t gross anymore, didn’t look ugly anymore. The first boy you liked was younger than you; he had just moved into the neighbourhood. Your parents had forced you to bring them some cookies, which led you to meet Jungwon, a cute boy who reminded you a lot of a cat. He was kind, cute and followed you all summer long.
It didn't work out; it was just a little crush you had on the boy next door. However, he did become your friend. High school was where things started to change for you. The concepts of being an Alpha, Beta or Omega were unfamiliar to you. The only thing you knew was that your dad was an Alpha, and your mom, along with your sisters, were Omegas. Classes about what your sub gender could be were boring; it was then that you had met him.
It was impossible not to notice him; he had energy that commanded attention from anyone, girls and guys were around like moths to a flame. He was pretty, handsome, beautiful. You weren’t sure if there were enough words to describe his beauty. Were you jealous about how full his lips were, or how his waist was nonexistent? You get why everyone wanted him; a part of you wanted him. But you also knew that he wouldn’t glance your way even if it was for a second.
He felt untouchable to you; he had a crowd that followed him. You knew that he didn’t matter if he presented as Alpha or Omega; it wouldn’t change how he was seen. A part of you knew that you had developed a crush on him, your second one. This felt like it was going to end in disaster. At least for you, not for Kim Sunoo.
Two years of seeing everyone you knew presenting while you didn’t. It felt awful; it meant that you were an anomaly in your own family, you weren’t an Alpha like your dad, nor an omega like your sisters and mom. They had tried to comfort you, telling you that maybe you were just a late bloomer. There were stories of people presenting at the age of 21, and you still had three years left. But it didn’t help, cause in a world where Alphas were at the top, Omegas were desired by Alphas. Being a beta meant that you didn’t belong in either place; betas didn’t have mates, didn’t have the strength and authority Alphas had. They are just excited in this world.
It was a system that you came to hate as the years passed. As the years passed, you had lost hope of ever presenting at all; you were just a beta. A background character in this world.
synopsis yn felt her emotions as colours. but when kim sunoo leaves and takes all her emotions and colours with him, all that's left is regret.
warnings profanity, angst, major character death.
ever since kim sunoo had known the word crush, he knew he had one on you.
to him, there was no one in the world as beautiful as you. even at age 10, when you were getting used to all the new changes in yourself, he loved the awkward version of you.
he knew the word crush wasn't enough to express what he felt for you. you were the breath in his lungs and the balm on his wounds. you kept him going, simply by existing.
he was smitten since age 6, when his mom introduced you to him, her best friends daughter. and then you two went on to become best friends.
he used to bring you coffee everyday. he brought you flowers every month and you'd laugh and hug him and peck his cheek and it'd all be worth it. he never regretted anything he did when it came to you.
except for one tiny thing.
you two were in a park, your head on his shoulder. you were eating a lollipop as you ranted on about the new geography teacher you hated. sunoo nodded and added in witty comments on cue, making you laugh and his heart fill with warmth.
the warmth of your laugh wrapped around him softly, then went to his head. he didn't know what it was that made him do it.
maybe it was how pretty you looked that day, even more so than usual. maybe it was the softness of your hair on his shoulder, tickling his nose.
maybe it was the slight breeze that was blowing that day, making his head hazy or maybe it was the cozy that you by his side enticed in him. your hand was soft in his as he suddenly pulled away to look at you, a quizzical look appearing on your face, the lollipop in your mouth.
he took the lollipop and set it down, making you raise your eyebrows, "...sun? is everything ok?"
he finally felt the nerves and how he wishes that was enough that day, to stop. he wished he had thought it through more, but every version of him regretted it that day when the words came out, "I like you."
he closed his eyes tight, waiting for your response, still giddy. that feeling was quick to disappear as he opened his eyes to panic on your face and..regret. ouch.
you pulled away from him, looking down, "..sunoo i-"
"no no. its fine. shush. don't say it please. just..forget i did that..please."
you cleared your throat and nodded, looking away.
neither of you ever brought it up again...because after that, the both of you stopped having conversations.
sunoo never really got over the unfairness of it all. every time he thought about it, it never got any fairer.
he would have fine with the two of you being friends again. it would have been fine. and yet, you started distancing yourself. it hurt. no matter how much he tried to gaslight himself into thinking it didn't, it did. it was ripping him apart. his wounds wouldn't heal and his lungs never got enough air.
he tried to get you back. he went to your house and apologized for making you uncomfortable. for ruining things but you wouldn't listen. you never listened. you would just curl into yourself whenever he spoke.
he hated you.
he hated you so much he didn't hate you at all.
he still loved you. his heart was still in your hands, except now it was torn beyond repair.
before, whenever he used to look at you from across the room, he would feel a sense of security was over him. he'd think that everything would be ok.
now all he felt was regret.
your whole life, you felt in colours. some people made you feel anxious in purple, some turned you green with envy, some made you pink with giddy, some even turned you gloomy with black.
sunoo had made you feel iridescent.
he was your best friend ever since you had learned the meaning of the word. unfortunately, you never could really grasp the true value and heaviness that came with the word.
you always complained how sunoo was the sole reason behind your smile lines. he made you laugh so hard once, water came out of your nose. he had felt so bad after and kept apologizing. it was painful sure, but now it a was memory you kept encased safely in your mind.
that day in the park was also another memory that stayed in your mind, except this time, it fought against you to keep it's place.
sunoo had seemed weird that day. you couldn't read him. you put your head on his shoulder, more out of habit rather than actual want. you ranted on about some topic that's long forgotten now. you were nervous that day, your blue confusion mixing with his grey indecisiveness, filling the air, making it hard to breathe.
sunoo was making you nervous for no reason. and you wish you had never found out the answer to that question.
"i like you."
the second he said that, your face dropped. at that moment, you froze. you couldn't understand what colour he was making you feel. and you had no idea what emotion it was. you panicked and it showed on your face. and sunoo was quick to pick up on it.
he quickly retraced his words and begged you to forgot it. and all you could do was nod. you didn't mean your nod though.
you should have paid closer attention though because that colour he was making you feel that day? it was the first and last time you felt iridescent. and it was the colour of love.
it didn't take you long to realize just how dumb you'd been though. soon enough, you started missing him. every time you saw him around campus, all you wanted to do was run up to him and melt into his arms. but you couldn't. and it was all your fault.
the realization crept up slowly. like the warmth of a campfire warming up your body in the middle of winter. but when you finally got it, it was undeniable. the reason you felt like your heart had been wrenched out from your chest was because it had been. you had unknowingly done it yourself that day and thrown it at sunoo.
and then you found yourself pacing your room, your hands in your hair as you ran over the correct words to apologize to sunoo until they became a jumbled mess in your head.
'i'm really sorry for what i did. i know i don't deserve your forgiveness..but i think we should be friends again..more than friends if you want.'
you shook your head, no that didn't sound right. you sat on your bed, nerves filling every inch of you. you missed him and you had the nonsensical urge to ask him for advice on how to confess to him.
it was ironic and silly but you were going insane.
it had been nearly a month without your hugs, your laughs, your touch.
sunoo was one inconvenience away from crashing out in front of everyone, his reputation be damned. he wanted to throw his pride out the window and contact you again.
he sighed and ran a hand through the tumbled mess on his head that he had to call hair. it hadn't looked like hair for a while. he fumbled with his bag while walking to his next class. then, he heard a familiar voice, your voice, and froze.
you were talking with your friend in front of her locker, and suddenly he had to tie his shoes.
"...i know that. of course i do, but at the same time...what i did was really shitty, dina. if i were him, i would not forgive myself."
his heart started skipping in his chest, where you talking about him?
dina shook her had and looked down at her shoes, crossing her arms, "look, something is better than nothing. you should tell him how you feel. you do know how you feel now right? you're a hundred precent certain?"
you nodded and looked out the window, "i'm sure of that... i love him, dina."
he couldn't feel his heart anymore, he couldn't feel anything except the sound of blood rushing to his face. you loved him, you loved...him.
he wanted to go there and pull you into his arms, but he couldn't. he had to give you time, he had to give you space to figure this out yourself.
you finally looked at dina, "i'm gonna tell him tomorrow morning...before assembly."
his face was about to burst with the force of his smile. he quickly walked away, an apology slipped into his pocket for eavesdropping.
you loved him. him. kim sunoo. you, yn, the girl he had been in love with his whole life, loved him back. he wanted to scream it from rooftops.
his smile was permanently tattooed onto his face as he waited for the school hours to end, as he walked out of the gates.
all he could picture was your face when he saw you next. he should go home and put on that new face mask he bought. god, he couldn't wait for tomorrow.
you were still in his mind, like you always were, as he crossed the street too early. your smile in his memory and your words in his ears as the truck came too fast, too soon.
you were his last thought as the truck crashed into him.
"mom! i'm leaving." you checked your reflection in the mirror again, smoothing down your hair, reapplying your lip gloss.
you put your bag on your shoulder, trying to calm your nerves. you were going to do it today. you walked to the front door.
"mom! i'm going!...aren't you gonna say bye?" you huffed. you didn't have time for this. where was she? you walked back into the house, setting your bag down.
you found her on the phone in the room. she was laughing, her shoulders shaking, a hand on her mouth to stifle her giggles. you rolled your eyes, "momm. i'm leaving for schooll..what are you..mom?"
she turned around at the sound of your voice and your words cut off. something was very very wrong. your mom wasn't laughing. she was crying. great heaving sobs that shook her body. she pressed her hand tightly to her mouth, trying to muffle her sobs.
you immediately rushed to her, "mom, what's wrong?! what happened?" she couldn't form words, shaking her head. she handed you the phone. you took it from her, worry and panic and confusion running through you.
you checked the contact. it was...sunoo's mom? what? a chill ran down your spine. your hand was shaking as you brought the phone to your ears.
"..hello? imo? what's..."
"yn..sunoo..he passed away yesterday. a c-car accident.." her voice was shaky and teary. but what was she saying? sunoo...what?
"i'm sorry dear, i have to go now..please.. take care of yourself." the call cut off and so did your brain.
nothing made sense. sunoo and passed away? he was the brightest person in the world. what was she talking about? your eyes snapped to your mother, "what is she talking about? is she lying? what..what type of prank is this?" you grabbed onto her shoulders, "mom..mom tell me it's a prank. mom. mom please. mom."
she just kept shaking her head. why wasn't she saying anything? you could feel the tears in your eyes. fuck.
you ran to the door again, eyes blurry and hands shaky as you fumbled with your bag, getting your phone out. you opened it and clicked on his contact.

you slid down to the floor, your body heaving with sobs as the emptiness finally filled you, the world suddenly grey.

a/n: based on this ask from anon! i changed it a little bit i still hope you like it 🩷
The living room sparkled with the glow of string lights wrapped around the tree, the golden star perched on top glittering as if it were the crown jewel of the night. It was Christmas Eve, and the dorm of the group was abuzz with holiday energy.
The members were scattered across the room, some lounging indolently on the couch, others sprawled on the floor with a mountain of colorfully wrapped presents. Laughter bounced off the walls, fueled by Riki’s dramatic reenactment of accidentally burning cookies earlier in the day.
You were seated comfortably on the plush rug, sandwiched between Sunoo and Jake, while the others passed around mugs of steaming hot chocolate.
You were so glad they decided to include you in their holly jolly Christmas day, despite not being too close with everyone.
Despite the warmth of the room and the festive chatter, you just couldn't ignore how close Sunoo was sitting to you— his shoulder lightly brushing yours every time he shifted, his warmth unmistakable.
“Alright, who’s next?” Jungwon’s voice cut through the noise, his leaderly tone commanding just enough authority to keep everyone somewhat focused. “We’re not going to be here all night, people.”
Jay smirked, holding up his present dramatically. “Relax, Jungwon, it’s Christmas, not a board meeting.”
The group burst into a fit of laughter, but Sunoo was unusually quiet beside you, fidgeting with a small box wrapped in silver paper. You looked at him curiously, noting the unusual pink tint on his cheeks.
"Hey man, are you nervous or something?" Heeseung teased, noticing the same thing. "You've been holding that gift like it's a newborn baby.”
“Me? Nervous? Never," Sunoo said hastily, though the way his hand closed much tighter around the present belied his words. "I just… it’s a special gift."
Jake leaned forward, that mischievous grin spreading on his lips. "Oooh, this is juicy. Who's it for?"
Sunoo shot him a mock glare; his lips twisted wryly. "Why don't you mind your own business?
Before Jake could say anything back, Jungwon clapped his hands again. "Let's keep this moving. Sunoo, if you don't open something soon, we're skipping you."
Sunoo let out a melodramatic sigh, but instead of opening his own gift, he turned to you. "Actually… this one isn't for me." He held out the small silver-wrapped box, his voice soft yet clear. "It's for you."
The room fell silent.
“For me?" you asked, the sound of your voice barely above the crinkling of wrapping paper in the background.
Sunoo nodded, his face growing redder as he placed the box in your hands. "Yeah, I— uhm… Go on, open it.”
You hesitated for a moment, aware of the eyes on you, but the genuine anticipation in Sunoo's gaze urged you forward.
You carefully peeled back the wrapping paper, revealing a small wooden box etched with delicate patterns of stars and moons. Inside, nestled on a bed of soft velvet, was a bracelet unlike anything you'd ever seen.
It wasn't just jewelry, but a story. Delicate charms dangled from the chain, each one different. A sun, a music note, a book, a snowflake, and even a small heart-all symbols of moments you and Sunoo had shared.
Your breath caught in your throat, "Sunoo…” you murmured, your eyes swelling with unshed and happy tears.
He leaned closer, his voice almost at a whisper. "Each charm is meant for something. Like the sun because well, you are my sunshine, and the musical note because you always hum even though you think nobody hears you.”
Sunoo continued “The book because for the first time we stayed in a book shop for hours, and the snowflake because well, for today."
You stared at him with your mouth agape; it seemed that the whole rest of the room was erupting.
"Hold on a second!" Jake practically shouted, with his mug of hot chocolate just about to spill. "Did I just hear 'you're my sunshine'?”
Jay tossed his head back and let out a laugh. "This is better than expected. “Hey, are you trying to make us all look bad?"
"Right? Where's my custom jewelry?" Riki said, faking outrage. "This is just favoritism, and I'm not going to stand for it."
Sunoo, to his credit, took the teasing in stride, though his cheeks stayed pink. "This is only for her.”
Meanwhile, you were still in your processing, your fingers tracing the charms on the bracelet lightly. "Sunoo, this is… I don't even know what to say."
He leaned his head to one side, softening his expression. "Say you like it."
"I love it," you said, your voice shaking with emotion. "It's perfect."
A warm smile spread across his face, and for a moment, it felt like it was just the two of you in the room. But of course, that peace didn't last long.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Jake’s voice broke through the moment. "Did Sunoo just lean in closer?” Sunghoon continued, “Are we witnessing the beginning of a love confession?
“Stop it, you two,” Heeseung said, though he was clearly holding back laughter. “Let them have their moment.”
Sunoo rolled his eyes, finally leaning back with a sigh. “You’re all impossible.” Then, with a playful grin, he turned back to you. “Merry Christmas.”
And because it was Sunoo, he didn't just leave it at that. He leaned in and lightly touched his forehead against yours in an action so sweet and intimate that sent the room into another frenzy.
Riki dramatically pretended to faint onto the couch. "I can't handle this. It's too cute.”
Jay nodded, crossing his arms in a stern manner. "I didn’t even realise Sunoo liked Y/n this whole time.”
He smirked at last, finally folding into his usual mischievous self. "I’m just a good actor.”
The night was a continuation of laughter and teasing, but the bracelet on your wrist kept going back to that quiet, meaningful moment you'd shared with Sunoo.
Even in the midst of chaos, you couldn't help but steal glances at him, and every time you did, you caught him looking back—his eyes sparkling like the stars on the tree.
But the best was when, by the end of the night, it was time for you to go back home, Riki placed a mistletoe on the door as Sunoo was seeing you out.
And well, the fireworks set as his lips met yours, more tender than the cake you had earlier.

good boy!sunoo x bad girl!reader
content(s): suggestive scenes, angst, fluff(?), sunoo fell hard and can’t get up at all, sunoo is obsessed, noo is so very astronomically whipped and down bad, he’s insane—and a professional gaslighter ngl
type: oneshot
word count: 4.1k
sometimes, sunoo wants to rip his heart out of his chest and just pop it with his bare hands. he feels too much at times, so so much that he doesn’t know what to do about it.
and more often than not, it happens with (y/n).
he likes her so so much, that whatever she does affects him. that all he does is for her to like him. it’s pathetic, he knows. but he can’t help it. he’s a sensitive boy with a heart bigger than his being.
sunoo lets out a sigh as he leans against his door that’s securely locked. the last thing he wants is another ‘talk’ on how he should stop being friends with (y/n).
“what’s wrong? had a fight with the parents again?”
little do they know that the subject of their worries is in their soft-hearted, obedient son’s room—sitting on his bed’s edge with her head tilted, unconcerned with the rest of the world.
sunoo smiles, one that doesn’t reach his eyes, and nods. he naturally makes his way to her before sinking to his knees with his head on her lap and arms around her lower legs. “just a small argument.”
the girl coos as she runs her fingers through his dyed blonde locks before deepening her touches to gently massage his scalp—magically lifting the weight on his chest and clearing the dark clouds in his head. “poor baby… what is it about this time?”
she always asks. and he always ignores.
he doesn’t want to tell that it’s about her but neither does he ever want to lie to her.
“need something to feel better?” (y/n) asks. hand still in his hair and he swears if he could purr, he would’ve.
when he comes back to the room all upset like this, they tend to take a little trip together—out the window, off the roof and away to the little ice cream shop nearby.
but today’s different. sunoo doesn’t have the appetite for it. he wants something else… something sweeter.
he props his head up, chin in the little curve between her pressed thighs before looking up at her—blinking prettily with those honey eyes of his. “kisses…give me kisses.”
(y/n) stifles a laugh at his obvious attempt at cute seduction before gesturing him to get up—shifting herself slightly to the centre of the bed to let sunoo straddle her, sitting on her lap before he leans in for the kiss.
it’s odd—to be kissing someone who is just a friend, on the lips. but they somehow made it a norm.
it all started back when they were both still fresh high school students and they were watching a drama on sunoo’s tablet. both cuddled up on his bed with her head against his chest and him against the headboard—when suddenly a kiss scene appeared.
sunoo couldn’t help but glance at the girl beside him as he chewed his bottom lip. he claimed it was curiosity, a ‘want-to-know’ basis, when he verbally asked “what does it feel like to kiss?” followed by a “i want to know what it feels like.”
and that’s how his first kiss happened with (y/n).
when it ended, she said sunoo had the most soft lips ever, as she expected, but that was all she said. while sunoo, albeit his silence, thought her lips were one of the seven wonders of the world.
he thought them as the most gentle, beautiful of feelings—softer than pillows and more comforting and sweet than hot cocoa on a harsh winter day. he thought her lips were akin to smooth white sands below the feet on the beach, the soothing petrichor that traveled in the air as well as the mini rainbows reflected off water puddles.
her lips became his addiction.
and so every once in a while, he’d ask for kisses—apprehensively at first. but (y/n), sweet, lovable (y/n) who never really thought much of it caved every single time.
“sunoo, you’re a little aggressive today,” (y/n) comments against his lips when he pulls away to catch his breath. he mewls, lips puckering once more to connect with hers but she holds him back by the hair. he gasps at the sharp feeling in his scalp but soon melts into it—brows dipping at the tails and clouded eyes turning glossy at the desperation of wanting more of her touch. “what’s going on inside that pretty head of yours?”
her croon strikes him in ways he can’t comprehend and his hands reach for her face, cupping her cheeks to which she loosens her grip to and he’s free to push forward again—letting them connect.
“don’t ask… just kiss me,” he murmurs, pleading her, as his hips press closer against her and plush thighs tighten on each side of her waist.
feeling his desperate desire, (y/n) reciprocates—hands traveling up his chest from his abdomen and higher to hook around his nape before shifting to his back where she traces his spine.
every point of contact leaves a pleasantly searing sensation against his skin, making him quiver and sigh as his long lashes flutter against his cheeks at the stimulation.
he genuinely believes one can get intoxicated over kissing. his heart is running miles per second, thoughts all muddled and foggy and his head’s turning dizzy and yet it feels good. a blissful kind of dizzy.
a choked moan sounds from him when she pushes him down onto the bed, instantly making his blood rush and heart pop with excitement.
his nerves are jittery as he looks up at the girl hovering above him, eyes half-lidded and red-rimmed as his head sinks into the pillow. his cheeks in a deep rosy red that stretches up to the tips of his ears and reaches further down to his neck and chest. “(y-y/n)…”
“feeling better already?” (y/n) asks, voice in that wispy tune that instantly brings a smile to his face, eyes scintillating with admiration at her and she cups his cheek. “good.”
the sheets rustle under her when she climbs off to fix her clothes. sunoo watches, confusion written all over as he sits up.
“are you going somewhere?” he asks quietly although another question is interlaced within: ‘are you leaving me?’
she nods, wordless, before picking up her sling bag and heading to his window to climb out. “see you when i see you, noo.”
sunoo rises onto his knees on the mattress, instinctively wanting to reach out but stops himself—curling his fingers around his sheets instead as he watches her step out to the roof before hopping to the grassy ground.
and just like that, she’s gone.
—
“you’re not dating (y/n), right?” sunoo’s friend, jungwon, asks.
the older shakes his head albeit reluctant and the other lets out a relieved sigh before punching the youngest’s shoulder. “i told you! (y/n) won’t cheat on sunoo!”
“what?” the oldest of three blurts, brows knitted. “what are you even talking about?”
“nothing. we just saw (y/n) noona with some guy sneaking behind the college last time and they seemed like a thing so…” riki explains briefly with a lack of passion, uninterested now that the issue’s been solved.
a complete contrast from the oldest whose face scrunches and nails dig into his palms at the information. and a second later, a large grating noise pierces their ears at his abrupt rise—legs of the chair sliding painfully loud against the tiles before he rushes out the cafe.
his friends watch with bewilderment and jungwon stands, confused at his departure and oblivious to the older’s tenacious turbulence of emotions that heightens at every second spent without (y/n) in his sight.
‘she has a boyfriend? since when?’ his thoughts run wild. ‘why didn’t she tell me? why’d she keep it from me? why wHY WHY?’
he doesn’t even realise that he’s been speeding to her house with hands tight on the straps of his tote bag—not until his lungs are burning from the lack of air and he topples forward onto the porch as he gasps deeply for oxygen.
red in the face and limbs trembling, he knocks on her door with hopeful wishes. hoping that whoever it is that his friends saw her with is just some fling, a one-time thing or even just a boy toy—anything, as long as it means she isn’t replacing him.
and yet all his wishful thinking only leads to a grave desolation when her door swings open to reveal an unfamiliar man bare at the top and sweatpants at the bottom that hang lowly on his hip.
“uhhh…” he sounds (dumbly, according to sunoo) and sunoo’s face falls from pure shock and horror. “can i help you?”
“who are you?” noo asks, eyes wide and colours draining as his grip tightens on his bag’s cotton handles. “and where’s (y/n)?”
his question’s answered when the sweet sound of her voice reaches from the stairs.
“san? who’s at the door?” she calls for the man.
‘san,’ sunoo echoes in his head and his gaze burns into the defined man’s visage, sharpening into a glare the more he notices how perfectly sculpted he is. ‘is this the type of guy she likes?’
running his stare up and down judgmentally, he lets out a subtle yet bitter scoff—making the other to arch up his professionally trimmed brow—before he walks pass him with a little shove at the shoulder.
“sunoo? what are you doing here?” (y/n) asks just as she arrives downstairs and instead of answering, sunoo wraps his arms around her tightly. her eyes widen with slight surprise before she starts patting his back. “did…something happen?”
“yes,” he directly says, wanting to rid off the giant pest infesting her house as soon as possible. “there’s a half-naked guy at your door and he’s scaring me.”
shut! the front door swings to a close.
“i did nothing to him,” san quickly but casually chimes with hands up in surrender. “who’s he, anyways?”
“oh, um, this is sunoo,” (y/n) briefly introduces, not even bothering to ask the addressed person to detach from her and he easily rotates his position to instead backhug her.
san tilts his head at the obvious contempt on noo’s face and a smirk of mischief stretches. “ahh… so the other pretty boy you told me about?”
“i’m her only pretty boy,” sunoo petulantly grumbles and arms tighten around (y/n)’s waist.
unfortunately for him, the shirtless man is a man of game and tricks. he enjoys tampering with others’ emotions, making them lose composure from irritation or anger—and jealousy is just the perfect, nasty thing.
he cocks a brow up and lips jut. “that’s not what she said, though. i’m ‘pretty boy’ in her words.”
sunoo stiffens instantly and he looks down at (y/n) who turns to him upon feeling his burning stare. “you said that? that he’s your pretty boy?”
the girl’s prolonged silence answers his question and he’s filled with dread.
mouth gaping and brows dipping, his fingers start digging into the fabric covering her abdomen as his arms coil further around her waist. a flurry of horrible thoughts rush through him, clouding his senses and faltering his rein on rationality. “i thought…i’m your only pretty boy.”
seeing him so downcast tightens the strain in her chest and she sighs, lifting a hand up to cup one of his cheeks before turning to san.
“thanks for coming over, san,” is all she says and he gets the message—causing him to scoff with amusement as he picks up his shirt that he’s thrown over the couch.
instead of just walking out the door when coming back however, he leans down to (y/n) and pecks her lips. both her and sunoo’s eyes widen with shock but the latter feels more. He’s outraged by the audacity of the insignificant man that stands in front of them.
san nearly chortles seeing the murderous glare sunoo impales him with, even more so at the way his jaw hardens but the moment (y/n) shifts, his facade of softness returns and that poor, kicked puppy face appears again.
if anything, he’s more of a fox.
after his exit, sunoo goes back to nuzzling into the crook of (y/n)’s neck before being disrupted by her turning around to look up at him—his lips jutting and brows knitting in response.
“sunoo,” (y/n) starts and he perks. a smile threatens to form as he awaits what she wishes to say. she’s going to invite him for a movie night. or maybe even a sleepover as they snack until dawn just to cheer him up, isn’t she?
“go home.”
the subtle curl of his lips fall as eyes widen. ‘…what?’ he gasps internally.
“go…home…?” sunoo repeats slowly as if she’s spoken in a foreign language and she nods.
“you’re not supposed to be here. go,” she urges once more and sunoo feels himself jolt in his position every now and then from the fierce, anxious heartbeat that drums violently.
he clenches his hands into tight fists and yet they tremble so vulnerably beside him. he gulps his impending tears and it hurts—it hurts so bad that he’s almost unable to speak. but his determination is stronger.
“it’s because i’m not like him, isn’t it?”
(y/n) who was just about to head back upstairs swivels swiftly at his bewildering question. “what are you talking about?”
“san. because i’m not like san. i get it—i’m not as muscular and manly but, i can be!” he announces suddenly and the girl can only shake her head.
“no, sunoo. it’s not because of that. just—leave. now.”
“what is it, then? we were fine before! we even kissed and all so why?”
“that’s exactly it. normal friends don’t make out with each other, sunoo! that’s just not how it’s supposed to be!”
“we were never normal friends from the beginning! what’s changed now??” sunoo roars and yet the clear distress and heartbreak laced within makes his tone appear more cracked and whiny.
(y/n) scoffs with disbelief, her brows knitted and eyes hardened. “you. you changed, sunoo.”
her answer knocks the air out of him and he falters in his post.
“wha…what do you mean? i haven’t changed,” sunoo breathes out, deeply puzzled but also anxious. has he changed? is that why she’s leaving him?
his loud, alarming thoughts fail to notify him of her approach and he nearly stumbles backwards when she’s suddenly in front of him. but he recovers—arms rapidly opening and leaning to embrace her but is stopped by her hand against his chest.
“you’re wanting more, sunoo. and i can’t give you more,” (y/n) clears things up and suddenly sirens go off in her bestfriend’s head. every coherent thought shredding as the impending doom of their relationship plagues his mind. “so we have to stop. this friendshi—no. whatever this is that we’re having, we have to stop it.”
she doesn’t permit him to try and argue as she quickly revolves on her feet before climbing up the stairs—leaving sunoo alone with his agonizing, turbulent emotions.
droplets of tears turn into heavy, burning waterfalls as he plunges to his knees.
—
days, weeks, months go by and sunoo’s still wallowing in his hurt. the scar she left on him seems irreparable no matter how hard he tries—no matter how hard anyone tries.
at first, he spent most of his time secluded in his room—skipping lectures and only surviving day to day because his parents sent food to his door. but even that began to tire him out. the longer he stayed in his bedroom, the more images of her appear from when she would hang around.
so he left and started spending time at a 24/7 PC room—gaming all day and night and living off ramen bowls and canned drinks. but that routine didn’t last long, either. the screen worsened the burn in his restless eyes that now carry deep dark circles. and just like the first time, he left the place.
so now, he finds himself at a club in the middle of the night to busy his mind and heart from reminding him of (y/n). he inhales down glass after glass of alcohol, hoping he’ll get intoxicated enough to forget his own name—or even, die. whichever comes first.
he just can’t bare another day without (y/n). truth to be told, she didn’t really play a significant role in his day to day life. it’s not like she drove him around, or paid his paycheck or helped with what ever essential thing there is to do to survive.
but she did help him live. she’s the only reason why he bothers to wake up and actually go out, the only reason why he goes to campus instead of being an influencer like he initially planned so he can have a solid, more secure future with (y/n).
she’s the reason why he cares so much about his appearance as he does now because she once said she likes pretty men, the only reason that he can feel, breathe and live. she’s his entire world and without her to be his anchor and home, he doesn’t have to stay, he belongs nowhere.
“hey, pretty boy,” a flirty voice greets and sunoo turns to the source with bloodshot eyes narrowed—his vision blurry from the lack of rest and the darkness of the club doesn’t help. “that bottle looks out of place for someone like you. tough time?”
sunoo looks at the tall bottle of alcohol in his hand that was once a small glass cup. he scoffs. “yeah.”
the girl hums and her arms slither around his shoulders down to rest on his pecs. her brows raise at the hardness of them, not expecting him to be so firm underneath. “wanna tell me about it? i can get us someplace more…private.”
the sensation of her hands against his burning skin feels sickening. they’re different, unfamiliar and strangely repulsive. he hates it. he hates her.
she’s not (y/n).
bile seems to rush up his throat and he quickly shoves her away before rushing out the closest door—it proving to be the back door as the smell of cigarette smoke clogs up his his nose.
miraculously, the smell manages to keep his vomit down and he pants heavily—back against the wall as he leans his head against the bricks behind.
he shudders as he recalls the touch of the unknown woman and he quickly chugs down the rest of the alcohol. the pet name she uses, ‘pretty boy,’ echoes in his head and he whimpers as (y/n)’s voice begins to echo in his ears—taunting him almost, with that melodious singing tune she always uses that drips with a saccharine essence.
he starts to breathe heavily, free hand clutching his chest while the other that holds the heavy glass bottle swings against the wall—inevitably breaking the object and he lifts it up to his gaze.
the sharpness of its broken edge sparkles below the moonlight and he finds himself staring at it, mesmerized.
they’re so beautiful—glinting beneath the faint streaks of the moon—and yet, so very deadly. a single scratch might cut open your skin and flesh, and a light jab can lead to deep, open holes that need a million stitches to close.
so enchanting and threatening.
i t reminds him of (y/n)—someone so truly breathtaking and yet she wounds him so violently, mercilessly.
“sunoo?”
he groans and shakes his head. he’s hearing things again. just as he always have.
“sunoo! what happened to you??”
urgent yet, gentle hands grapple his shoulders and shakes him harshly to gain his attention. sunoo furrows. he usually can’t feel her so vividly when he hallucinates her.
has he finally reached the peak of insanity?
“kim sunoo!”
SLAP!
his face whips to the side as a sharp pain spreads across his reddening cheek—broken glass bottle discarded to the floor from shock and he looks up to see (y/n)’s worried face. “…(y/n)? are you here? really here?”
“what are you talking about? yes, i’m actually here!” the girl stresses and before she can scold him, he leaps forward to hug her—trembling aggressively at the familiar sensations of her warmth, her softness, her scent.
suddenly, he feels alive again.
“h-how did you find me?” he sobs out, already crying since the moment he found out she’s real and (y/n) sighs heavily.
the will to berate him slowly dissipates as she feels the crook of her neck getting drenched by his tears. “your parents…they called me saying you haven’t been home for a while. they tried to reach you but then realised you left your phone so they decided to ask if i knew where to find you before they called the police. it took a while but, from how you are, i managed to guess the pattern of what you’d do.”
sunoo’s fingers curl around the back of her shirt with such intensity it might just tear. “and you found me. you saved me—you always do.”
(y/n)’s chest tightens painfully at his declaration. he admires her, she’s always known that. though, she never brought it up. she breathes slow, silent, and her eyes catch the broken glass bottle on the stone ground.
her mind replays the image of sunoo staring at it, a dangerous glint in his inordinately hollow gaze moments before she stepped in. she gulps, throat drying at the thought of what could’ve transpired if she didn’t.
of what might have happened to sunoo if she…didn’t come at all.
“please don’t replace me,” he pleads quietly, breaking her thoughts and her hand pauses midway caressing his back. “don’t leave me alone. not again. please.”
the girl swallows thickly, chest ladened with guilt.
she never should’ve pushed him away. it wasn’t his fault. he didn’t do anything wrong. it’s her fault for playing along—for showering him with her attention and affection despite knowing full well that he likes her in a way she can’t reciprocate.
“i won’t…i never meant to replace you,” she assures and sunoo pulls away slowly to look at her—all glossy eyed and flushed as he searches her face for any hint of untruth.
“what about sa—” sunoo gets choked up, repulsed to even bring him up. “san?”
(y/n) lets out a soft exhale. “san was just…san. just someone i used to indirectly push you away. i hoped that if you heard about it, you’d move on but, it went differently than i expected.”
he’s instantly sober. chest light and heart racing as his head is high up in the clouds—drunk, but in a completely different way. “so, you don’t like him?”
“nope,” (y/n) replies with a pop at the ‘p.’ the air feels lighter now, tension simmered as sunoo recovers. “i like someone else—you.”
her confession knocks the air out of him, halting the gears in his head as he stares wide-eyed.
(y/n) smiles although it doesn’t quite reach her eyes. she likes him, gosh, she does. more than he thinks but she never wanted to admit because they’re too different. if it isn’t for the fact that she saw how self-destructive he was, she might never have spilled.
she thought he’s turn out bad if he was with her, but turns out, he’s worse without her.
“i love you,” sunoo suddenly professes and she titters, seeing the radiance return to his face while his grin appears—tears brimming in his eyes from being overjoyed. “i love you, so so much. you don’t know. i’m crazy for you.”
she squeals when sunoo suffocates her in a tight teddy bear hug as he litters kisses on the side of her head and down to her neck, relishing in her giggles from his ticklish affections.
“you really don’t know,” he murmurs against her forehead as he presses a lingering kiss, hands cupped around her face and fingers curling as if wanting to dig into her flesh yet, he restrains. his eyelids open, lashes fluttering as he stares at the dark of the night, a crazed, maniacal quality swirling in his honey eyes.
he smiles as he now gently sways side to side with (y/n) in his hold. his grip tightening at every minuscule shift she makes as if forbidding her from moving away—which in every single aspect, is nothing but the truth.
she doesn’t need to know that he left his phone on purpose, in hopes that she’ll come searching for him. she doesn’t need to know that he intentionally went to the places they often hang out at, knowing she’ll go to them and they’ll end up bumping paths.
she doesn’t need to know that he’s carefully curated this plan—knowing how sweet, lovable (y/n) will most definitely go out of her way for him.
he has her now. and he will make sure it stays that way forever.
and ever.
never to be apart again.

You need to study for a test. Sunoo knows the perfect way to support you with it - and maybe distract you a bit in-between.
~~~
“Hey.” You didn't notice how Sunoo entered the room, only aware of his presence when you felt his arms wrap around your shoulders and heard his voice. “How are you?”
You let your head fall back onto his shoulder, your eyes searching for his. “Exhausted.”
“I’m sorry,” he whispered, pressing a quick peck against your cheek. “You should take a break.”
“I will once I’m done with this.” You couldn't suppress a yawn, causing a quiet chuckle from Sunoo. “How was your day?”
“I missed you. But it was good, I think I did really well at practice today.”
“I’m glad. I’m sure you did amazing.” Another yawn, another chuckle from Sunoo.
“Okay. I love you but you need a break - and I am hungry. What do you say about a nice lunch?”
You sighed. “I’d love to but I should really continue this assignment…”
“Hmm, okay.” Sunoos hands wandered to your back, softly massaging your shoulder blades as he pressed another kiss onto the top of your head. “Another idea: you continue writing this while I cook us lunch. And when I’m done you'll take a break and we'll eat together.”
You closed your eyes, taking in the feeling of your body slowly loosening up again, the tension that had built up since the morning slowly disappearing. “That sounds perfect actually. I should be done soon with this chapter anyways.”
“Do you want to continue writing in the kitchen? Maybe a change of scenery can help too - if it doesn't distract you too much.”
“You mean if you won't distract me too much,” you chuckled. “But I’ll take my chances.”
Sunoo smiled and nodded, and before you could get up by yourself he had already swept you off your feet. “Grab your laptop please.”
You couldn't hold back your laughter, clutching onto the laptop with one hand while you held onto Sunoo with the other, trying not to fall. “You're insane.”
“Insanely in love with you, yes. Let me sit you down right here.” He carefully put you down at the table, unable to resist another kiss against your lips before he grinned and walked off towards your fridge. “Do you have any wishes?”
You were just about to shake your head when you stopped yourself. “Another kiss maybe?”
“Oh?” Sunoo smirked as he walked towards you again. “I thought I shouldn't distract you?”
“I think I can handle two more seconds.” As soon as he was close enough you put your hands on his cheeks, slowly pulling his face towards you until your lips could reach his. The kiss might have lasted a bit longer than 2 seconds - but neither you nor Sunoo were complaining.
“So no wishes for lunch then?” He grinned against your lips as you shook your head.
“Surprise me please.”
One last kiss before he went back to the fridge and started getting ingredients out - not that you watched him. Of course you were focused on your assignment, busy with typing smart words about smart topics… not at all were you watching your boyfriend chopping ingredients, the muscles on his back working underneath his shirt while he was softly humming…
“I can feel you stare at me, y/n.” He turned around, a bright smile on his face. “What about your assignment?”
“I’m focused,” you mumbled. Someone should applaud you for the force you had to use to pry your eyes from Sunoos figure back to your laptop, trying to get back into the topic. Sunoo went back to the ingredients, already humming again, but this time you managed to let the sounds move to the background. Smiling to yourself you started typing again, and somehow it really seemed to go better now.
~~~
“That smells really good.” You spoke up after a while, your eyes finally looking up from the screen. “What are you making?”
“Your favorite,” Sunoo answered, his focus shifting towards you. “Obviously.”
“You're so in love with me.” You playfully rolled your eyes, not expecting for Sunoo to push out a laugh as he suddenly jumped towards you, gripping your chin so you were forced to look at him.
“Yes I am.” His eyes wandered towards your lips, and only a second later you felt his lips on yours, your eyes fluttering shut. “But you love me too.”
You just nodded as your lips moved against each other, none of you planning to let go. “I love you.”
“I love you most, sprout,” he whispered. “Don't forget that.”
Your hand wandered to his back, pulling him closer so you could deepen the kiss, while his hand wandered towards your hair. You didn't have to speak up or reassure him, your kisses doing the job all too well. You could have gone on forever, if it weren't for the pot on the stove that suddenly hissed, causing you to almost jump apart.
“I should probably go back to the food…” Sunoo mumbled, his face a deep red. “And you should focus on your assignment.”
“Right.” Your fingers moved around your lips, feeling where Sunoo was just seconds ago. “Right - I’m almost done with the chapter anyway.”
“Good.” He quickly turned around to go back to cooking, while you tried to shift your focus back on your assignment. Thankfully you were actually almost done, only a few sentences left. You and Sunoo managed to finish your work at the same time, the plate full of delicious food being placed in front of you right when you closed your laptop.
“Perfect timing,” he smiled. “I hope you'll enjoy.”
“It's made by you, of course I will.”
His face lit up as he watched you eat, your eyes closing in bliss. “It's so good, Sun.”
“I’m so glad.” Only then he started eating too - a little habit he had developed when you moved in together. “Ah - I did a good job.”
“Yes you did.”
It didn't need words to notice how proud Sunoo was of himself, and he had every right to be. The food was incredible, the flavors melting together and its warmth filling you up with a cozy feeling. This was just what you needed, a well deserved break from the computer screen and the glass of water that had filled your morning so far.
“Thank you, Sun.” You grabbed his hand once you had finished your food, pressing a small kiss against his knuckles. “This was really good.”
You could see him blush again, his eyes focused on you.
“I’m glad you loved it.” He cleared his throat before he spoke up again. “Do you have any plans for the rest of the day?”
“My assignments…”
He chuckled. “Right. So what about this: you use the energy right now to continue writing. And once you feel yourself getting tired we can go on a walk or take a little nap. And tonight I’ll order us dinner and we’ll sit down on the couch and watch a movie.”
You just stared at him for one, two seconds, mouth open in awe. “You're perfect.”
“You are. But I will take that as a yes then.”
You nodded. “Of course it's a yes.”
“Can I keep you company?”
You laughed. “If you promise not to be too distracting?”
“I promise!” Sunoo jumped up again to grab your plates. “I’ll do the dishes and you can get started. Do you want to sit on the couch? It might be more comfortable.”
“Sunoooo,” you whined. “You need to be less perfect - how am I supposed to focus on my assignment now.”
“You can do it, I believe in you.” He grinned. “Fighting!”
You couldn't hide the laugh again as you made your way towards the couch, the laptop on your lap waiting for you to start writing. Just as you started Sunoo appeared with a book in his hands and lied down next to you, his head leaning against your thigh. You began absentmindedly running your fingers through his hair while your head was trying to come up with the right things to write. The room was silent apart from the occasional typing and Sunoos content hums as your fingers found their way back into his hair again. You could see his eyes closing over and over again, fatigue of all his training taking over as his head lolled to the side. It was an adorable sight, his soft breaths moving the pages of his book before you placed it on the little side table. You kept massaging his head, managing to write a total of 4 pages before you also began to feel tired, continuously losing your train of thought as your eyes threatened to close too. With a small sigh you put your laptop down, nudging Sunoos shoulder until he stirred awake.
“Sorry,” you whispered. “I just thought the bed might be more comfortable - I’ll take a little nap too.”
He yawned, nodding with tired eyes. “Sounds good.”
You walked behind him as he almost stumbled towards the bed, falling right onto it. With a quiet giggle you lied down next to him, pushing some loose strands of hair behind his ear. “I love you.”
“I love you too, sprout,” he mumbled, words already slurred again. “Come here please.”
You shuffled closer, arms wrapping around him as you buried your face into his neck. “Hi.”
“Hey.” Now it was Sunoos turn to run his fingers through your hair, massaging your head. “Should we set an alarm?”
“That's probably a good idea.” You sighed as you had to turn around, setting a quick alarm before you moved right back into your previous position. “All done.”
“I am proud of you, you know,” Sunoo suddenly whispered. “You did so well today.”
“I’m proud of you. Training must have been so exhausting but you still cooked and took care of me.”
“It's nothing.” You could feel his lips against your hair. “I love you, I’d do anything for you.”
You understood why Sunoo fell asleep so quickly earlier - the continuous movement of his fingers in your hair and his soft whispers were very effectively lulling you to sleep. You noticed that he was talking to you, but your brain was too tired to decipher them and it didn't take long until everything turned black and you welcomed sleep.
~~~
“Sprout?” You barely registered the words that woke you up. “Hey, we need to get up.”
With a groan you squeezed your eyes together, burying your face deeper into Sunoos neck.
“I don't want to get up either,” you heard him whisper. “But we can't just nap all day.”
“Why not,” you mumbled. “I think it sounds like a perfect plan.”
“Because you have assignments to do, Sprout.” Sunoo pressed a small kiss against the top of your head. “And I will be here to support you.”
“Napping all day sounds so much better though…”
You could hear him chuckle. “I can imagine, but those assignments won't write themselves.”
You sighed. “5 more minutes?”
“Okay.” Sunoo pulled you closer as he kissed you again. “But only so you can get more awake, so open your eyes please.”
When you followed his words you were met with a wide smile on your boyfriends face. “Hi.”
“Hey - I still don't like this,” you pouted.
“Sorry y/n. But you know I only want the best for you.”
“I know. I just wish I didn't have to do all this work.”
Sunoo was briefly watching you before you felt his lips on yours, a surprising softness behind it. He placed his hand onto your cheek, his thumb drawing small circles onto it while your lips moved against each other. You were tempted to close your eyes again when Sunoo ended the kiss, leaning his forehead against yours instead.
“I get that but I know you will do great. You can do anything if you put your mind to it, y/n. You will also do amazing with this and once you're done we can do everything you want to do now.”
“Even nap all day?”
“Yes, even nap all day.” Sunoo chuckled. “Should we get up now?”
You nodded as you kissed Sunoo one last time again, before you were letting yourself get pulled up by him. “You're really amazing, you know that?”
“I can't be more amazing than you,” he simply said. “I’ll do some housework while you write, okay? And if you need anything just call for me.”
~~~
The world outside had slowly turned dark while you were typing word after word onto your assignment, only interrupted by a couple yawns here and there. You could hear Sunoo quietly singing and humming while he did the housework, cleaning up and folding some laundry, and it surprisingly calmed you down a lot. You found it easier to focus with him in the background - yes, even if you occasionally caught yourself staring at him - and so you somehow managed to write page after page after page.
“Hey, sprout?”
You looked up from your computer and saw Sunoo standing in front of you, a soft smile on his face.
“Yes?”
“When was the last time you filled up your glass of water?”
Oh. You were staring at it quizzically, as if the glass could somehow answer you. “I don't know… I refilled it once after our nap. I didn't really have time to do it again.”
Sunoo chuckled. “You're so lucky you don't live alone anymore, your chances of survival would be incredibly low. That was a few hours ago.”
“I can survive a few hours without water though,” you pouted. “I’m fine.”
Sunoo just looked at you, before he gave you a little kiss. “You know how easily you get headaches. Especially when you sit in front of the computer all day. Let me take care of that, hm? You just keep focusing on your work.”
You simply nodded. You knew Sunoo was right, and you knew you would regret not drinking enough water later, but your whole focus had been on this assignment. It didn't take long for him to come back, a glass of water in one hand and a plate in the other.
“I got you some snacks too! Some fruits, grapes, all the stuff you like.”
You were about to thank him when you spotted the things on the plate. The grapes were placed on toothpicks to make it look like tiny animals, the apple slices were flower shaped and he had added a bunch of colorful berries too.
“Sunoo that's-”
“I thought it might motivate you to eat if I arrange it prettily.”
“It's beautiful. The little animals are so cute.”
Sunoos eyes lit up. “I suddenly had this idea… I’m happy you like it.”
“I love it!” You quickly pulled him closer to kiss him. “I love you. Thank you Sunoo.”
“You're so welcome. I hope it can get you through the rest of your work.”
~~~
“Aaand I am done!” you finally declared as you closed your laptop. “This assignment is officially over.”
Sunoo almost jumped towards you, his arms wrapping around you. “I am so proud of you. I knew you could do it.”
“Thank you, Sun,” you smiled as you ate the last of your berries. “One thing less to worry about.”
“You did amazing, Sprout. I bet there's absolutely no reason to worry.”
You looked up at him, a content look on your face. “You're really the best. I wouldn't have finished it today if it wasn't for you.”
“Eh, I barely did anything. But we need to celebrate now! What do you want to do, should I order us takeout? Do you still want to take a nap? Or-”
“Let me get up first,” you giggled. “I don't think I can move after sitting down for so long.”
“Of course, of course,” Sunoo nodded. “Want me to massage you?”
“Oh!” Your eyes lit up. “Yes, yes please.”
“I’m on it.”
Sunoo pulled you towards the couch and made you sit down in front of him. His hands were pushing your hair over your shoulder before you felt them kneading your skin, applying the pressure in all the right places.
“Is this good?” His voice was quiet and low, making you shiver under his hands.
“It's perfect,” you whispered while you had to fight the urge to just doze off. You could hear Sunoo chuckle.
“Do you want to lie down? I can massage you like that too.”
“You're perfect,” you whispered again. “I’d love that.”
Lying down like this made it even harder to stay awake - so you dozed off after a couple minutes.
~~~
When you woke up again you found yourself in your bed, Sunoos arms wrapped around you.
“I thought the bed might be more comfortable,” he mumbled before he pressed a kiss against your cheek. “I ordered us takeout, it should arrive soon. And we could watch a movie while we're eating? Or we just talk.”
“What did I do to deserve you.” You pulled him closer to kiss him again, not wanting to let go. But your plan was disturbed by the sound of the door bell, and Sunoo stood up after one last kiss.
“That's our food, I’m sorry.”
“Don't be. I will pick out a movie while you pay!”
You both almost jumped towards the living room, Sunoo rushing towards the door while you turned on the tv, settling on a movie you knew you both would enjoy.
“Hey,” you heard after a minute, Sunoo leaning against the doorframe. “Did I already tell you how pretty you look today?”
You could feel yourself blushing while you stared at him, a smile spreading on your face. “You didn't - but thank you.”
“Well I need to catch up on it then,” Sunoo shrugged while he placed your favorite food on the tiny table in front of the tv. “Come here please.”
You moved closer to him so you could lean your back against his chest, his hand moving through your hair while the other one was wrapped around you.
“You're so pretty, sprout,” he mumbled into your ear, his lips soft against your neck. “I am so lucky. And I am so happy that you were successful today. You did so well.”
“It was nothing,” you whispered, blushing again. “You helped me a lot.”
“It is though. I am so proud of you.”
“Thank you.” You closed your eyes again, taking in the feeling of Sunoos hands massaging your scalp.
“Let's eat before you fall asleep again, hm?” Sunoo laughed.
“I can't help it, you're just so comfy.”
“You are too, sprout.”
“I can't promise that I won't fall asleep during the movie,” you yawned. “But dinner sounds good right now.”
“I will hold you close when you do, don't worry. We can just watch the rest tomorrow then.”
You gave him a little peck on the cheek before you shifted your attention towards the food in front of you. “That sounds perfect. You are perfect.”
“You even more,” Sunoo grinned, his eyebrows raising when he saw you open your mouth. ”Ah ah ah- no arguing.”
A second later you found your mouth full with the ordered food, effectively shutting you up - at least for now.

it was a normal morning. it was.
walking down to the great hall with your best friend, sunoo, for breakfast - it was your daily routine. it had been for the past 4 years.
you'd wait for each other in the common room every morning, then make your way to the hall for breakfast. sunoo would be complaining about some teacher or classmate while you speed-run some homework due the other day.
then, you'd leave for your classes, but not without sunoo stuffing some toast up your mouth, because you never actually eat much in the mornings. not when you're completing work you should have done earlier. this morning was just like every other - until an owl dropped a red envelope at sunoo's plate.
suddenly, the other students sitting nearby you guys silenced, eyeing the howler in front of your best friend. howlers were never a good thing to receive. they were often sent by parents to their children who had been particularly naughty.
"are you in trouble?" someone asked, but no one could believe it. after all, sunoo was a good student, great even. he was a ball of sunshine, and did well at school. he had no enemies, not when a smile from him could send anyone melting on the inside.
so what the hell was a howler doing in front of him?
"you should open it soon," you told him, putting a comforting hand on his shoulder. his eyes remained fixed on the letter. "to get it over with."
it seemed like the whole hall leaned away as sunoo slowly reached for it, confused and afraid of what it might contain.
a moment later, the envelope exploded, and a distorted voice started roaring from it, garnering everyone's attention.
"DEAR SUNOO, YOU DON'T KNOW WHO THIS IS, BUT I HAVE TO TELL YOU NOW.
"I LIKE YOU. I HAVE FOR A WHILE NOW, AND IT'S SO HARD KEEPING THESE FEELINGS TO MYSELF. NOT WHEN YOU'RE SO PERFECT, AND AMAZING, AND BRILLIANT, AND TALENTED.
"I'M NOT ASKING YOU TO RECIPROCATE MY FEELINGS, BUT I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW, THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO CARE FOR YOU - LIKE ME.
"SINCERELY, YOUR NOT-SO-SECRET ADMIRER."
a silence fell over the hall, as the howler burst into flames and ashes.
everyone had heard, and everyone was now staring at your best friend - who remained stunned in his seat, a hand over his mouth.
"sunoo?" you asked tentatively. the hand you placed on his shoulder seemed to wake him up.
he was about to say something when everyone burst into chatter about what had just happened, whistles echoing throughout the hall.
"whew!" jake, another of sunoo's friends, clapped his back. "now that's one way to confess." sunghoon nodded with a grin, holding his chuckle in as he stood slightly behind his fellow ravenclaw.
"no," sunoo whined, hiding his face completely behind his hands. "a good way of confessing is telling me who they really are. only cowards hide behind anonymity."
you rubbed his back comfortingly, trying to form words in your head.
"everyone's going to be talking about it for the rest of the day," sunghoon remarks.
"don't remind me," sunoo said, his voice muffled.
"are you okay?" you ask him, bending to try and get a look at his face. he turns his head slightly, and you see his face flushed red.
"oh!" you laugh. "did you like that?"
"of course he did," jake chuckled. "you know our sunoo, he loves the attention." he reached out to ruffle the boy's hair, but sunoo fought his hands away before jake could do anything.
"stop doing that!" he whined. "i'm just a little embarrassed. now everyone's in my business," he mumbled, sitting up and putting his red cheeks on full display.
"i think it's cute," you say, reaching up to comb his hair with your hand. you heard jake grumble about how sunoo only ever lets you touch his hair.
"ah sunoo," sunghoon sighed, patting the younger boy. "ever the lover for grand gestures, aren't you?"
sunoo huffed. "whatever. me and y/n are going to class now. i'm not listening to you two idiots any longer."
and then he up and left, taking you with him by the wrist.
the next week, another howler arrived for sunoo. everyone was curious now.
"DEAR SUNOO, I HOPE YOU'RE SMILING WHEN YOU GET THIS NEXT MESSAGE. IT ALWAYS BRIGHTENS UP MY DAY.
"I HEAR YOU THINK I'M A COWARD FOR REMAINING ANONYMOUS. I THINK SO TOO. BUT, IF YOU WANT TO KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT ME, I'LL TELL YOU ONE.
"I LIKE YOUR SOFT, FLUFFY HAIR, AND THE WAY YOU STYLE YOURSELF. IT ALWAYS AMAZES ME HOW YOU CAN MAKE OUR BORING UNIFORM INTO YOUR OWN. YOU INSPIRE ME.
"SINCERELY, YOUR NOT-SO-SECRET ADMIRER."
sunoo scoffed, but a smile tugged at his lips anwyay.
"is that even a fact about themself?" he asked you with a pout. "everyone likes my hair!"
the other students resumed their previous chit-chat, some trying to guess who the anonymous sender might be. you just shrugged and continued to eat your food, frantically trying to complete an essay for charms later that day.
"your admirer doesn't seem to have any plans of actually revealing who they are, huh?" sunghoon asked sunoo. him and jake had decided to sit with you two at the hufflepuff table this morning.
"no," sunoo sighed. "cowardly on another level - giving me hope, only to pull that on me!"
"maybe they'll reveal more in their next letter?" you try to comfort him.
"they better," he grumbled. "i need to know who it is."
"maybe it's someone you know!" jake says. "if they feel the need to distort their voice so they won't be recognised, maybe you know them."
"that barely narrows the pool of possibilities down! i know practically everyone at hogwarts," your best friend whined.
"it's only the second letter. you can't exactly guess much from two howlers," you tell him, still focused on your essay. you groan as you scribble out a whole paragraph.
"oh my god," sunghoon gasped, staring at your textbook from the other side of the table. "i totally forgot about that assignment."
"you idiot," jake smacked the taller boy's head. sunghoon reached for your textbook to look at the content, but you pulled it back.
"i can't let you see my textbook - i've written notes all over it," you say, embarrassed. sunghoon wouldn't be able to read much over all the post-it notes you've stuck on the pages.
"more like you've doodled all over it," sunoo laughed.
"listen - drawing cutesy little stars and hearts on the page is more interesting than professor kim drawling on about the goblin rebellion of 1612, okay?" you defended yourself.
jake raised an eyebrow. you could tell he wanted to laugh.
"whatever, just let me finish this essay. i'm almost done."
"i'm not! i haven't even started," sunghoon groaned. the three of you laughed as he leaned on jake's side, dragging his hands down his face with a whine.
over the next few weeks, sunoo would continue to receive howlers, garnering everyone's attention every time the owls swooped into the hall to drop off mail. in fact, it's become something the whole school started looking forward to - the only thing that had them excitedly running for the hall at the beginning of another hellish week of school.
waiting for another red envelope to plop onto sunoo's plate had become regular. the usual screaming into his face had become your normal monday mornings.
you realised that there were now several students sending him howlers, because he would receive 2-3 howlers every week, all with distinctly different voices and handwriting.
"seems like your original sender has got competition," jake giggled as sunoo rubbed his ear.
"i'm going deaf with all these letters screeching at me every week," he rolled his eyes, feeding you some fish from your own plate. you were working on more homework that you'd missed out on recently (what's new?). "and besides, none of them will ever beat the original."
"even riki's?" you asked, laughing. the second year had latched onto sunoo on his first day at hogwarts, and somehow joined the group of boys, despite being a lot younger.
he'd joined the trend of sending sunoo howlers one morning, although it was obviously him without the distorted voice. none of the other senders had bothered to cover up their voices.
"riki's 'confession' was him thanking me- actually, more like exposing me for bringing him some butterbeer from our last hogsmeade weekend!" sunoo cries in exasperation. "i had to put on the biggest puppy eyes i could when professor jeon pulled me aside to ask about it."
"i told you it was a stupid idea," sunghoon said solemnly, but the twitching of his lips betrayed his amusement.
"he threatened me to! that brat."
"i heard that!" riki's voice yelled from the slytherin table, next to hufflepuff's.
"that kid's crazy," you gasped through your laughter.
"he's going to ruin the fun," sunghoon sighed. "after his letter, the professors started talking of banning students from sending howlers to each other."
"what?" sunoo gasped. "how am i going to receive letters from my secret admirer?"
"they can just send you normal, written letters," you suggested.
"but it's way more interesting when their deformed voice is screaming about how much they love me," he pouted.
"oh, he's down bad," jake shook his head.
sunoo ignored him. "i miss them," he sighed instead. the original secret admirer hadn't been able to send a howler in 2 weeks, much to everyone's disappointment.
"look at him! he's missing someone he doesn't even know!" jake gawked in disbelief.
"i'm trying to figure it out."
"really? how?" sunghoon asked.
"i have a list of things they mentioned about themself, and other things i've figured out, on my phone."
"can we see?" you asked, curious.
"no!"
"why not?" jake pouted.
"i don't want you guys to figure it out. i want to be the one to do it," sunoo huffed stubbornly.
"but you'd figure it out sooner with all of us!" sunghoon says.
"with you?" sunoo gaped at the tall boy. "you may be ravenclaw, but you do not have the brains to actually be of any help."
"touche," sunghoon folded his arms and shrugged. "but hey, jake can help! and y/n!"
"the answer is no."
"well, you better figure it out soon, before the school actually bans us from sending howlers to each other," you tell him. he stares at you intently for a moment, then nods.
just then, another red envelope is dropped onto his plate. sunoo sighs as he shifts forward to open it, expecting another confession from a newer sender.
"DEAR SUNOO, I HOPE YOU HAVEN'T FORGOTTEN ME YET."
it was the original sender. sunoo switched his full attention onto the howler; everyone else quietened to listen in.
"I'M SORRY I HADN'T BEEN ABLE TO TALK TO YOU THE LAST FEW WEEKS. YOU KNOW SENDING YOU THESE LETTERS ARE MY FAVOURITE THING TO DO.
"YOU SEEM TO BE DOING WELL. I SAW YOU THE OTHER DAY, WITH CUTESY BOWS IN YOUR HAIR THAT YOUR FRIEND HAD PUT IN. THE SMILE ON YOUR FACE WAS HAPPIER THAN I'D EVER SEEN IT. I HOPE ONE DAY TO BE THE CAUSE BEHIND SUCH A PRETTY SMILE.
"ACCORDING TO THE RUMOURS THAT THE SCHOOL IS BANNING HOWLERS, THIS MAY BE MY LAST LETTER. IF IT IS, I'M GLAD THAT I GOT TO TELL YOU HOW I FELT, EVEN IF I'LL NEVER KNOW IF YOU LIKE ME BACK.
"LOVE, YOUR NOT-SO-SECRET ADMIRER."
even after the red letter set on fire and burned to ashes, your best friend's eyes remained fixated on the space in front of him. he stared into nothing, seemingly in a daze after the (possibly) last howler he'd ever get from his favourite anonymous admirer. you wondered what he was thinking.
"sunoo?" you prodded. he turned to look at you, eyes blown wide open.
it's like something clicked. his siren-like eyes pulled you in, engaging you into a staring contest. while the rest of the world continued, you two were stuck in your own timeless little space.
his eyes were always your favourite feature. you wished you could see the world through his beautiful eyes, even if for just a moment.
"hello?" sunghoon tapped you on the shoulder. you finally broke away from the hold sunoo had on you. "we've got to get to class."
"oh, right."
for the rest of the day, you couldn't seem to look directly at your best friend, still replaying the events of that morning.
it was clear sunoo had taken quite a liking to the anonymous sender, no matter how silly it sounded. in the weeks following their first letter, he would talk about them nonstop. his eyes twinkled and his cheeks got especially rosy whenever he did, and he also loved to speculate about who or what the person was like.
you listened whole heartedly, his voice soothing you after a long day of school. even if he was talking about someone else, or at least an illusion of a person he'd created.
sunoo had gotten frustrated with you for avoiding him all day. so he resorted to cornering you in the hufflepuff common room before you two went back up to your dorms.
"y/n. stop it."
"stop what?" you asked innocently.
"don't play dumb. why have you been ignoring me all day?"
"no i haven't."
"you're a terrible liar."
"how would you know?" you crossed your arms.
"you fiddle with your thumbs whenever you lie. you also comb your hair with your hands, fold your arms, stand up straighter, scrunch your nose-"
"okay, okay. i get it," you shook your head. "i'm sorry."
"you should be. i've been missing my best friend all day," he pouted.
you fell apart at his expression, and engulfed him in a hug. "i'm sorry, i didn't mean it. i hope you're okay."
"i would be better if you shared this hot chocolate with me by the fire place. i brought both mugs from the kitchens all by myself - and they're really hot!"
"fine," you laughed, and took a mug from one of his hands.
you two settled into the couches by the warm fire place, and you watched the flickering light from the flames reflect onto his hazel eyes.
"you always look at me like that."
"like what?" you asked.
"like you're obsessed with me," he grinned.
"sounds like you're obsessed with me," you retorted with a giggle. "to the point you even notice the way i look at you."
"why wouldn't i be?"
your smile dropped. you looked down at your cup, your reflection in the drink swirling.
"you can't just say things like that."
"why not?" you stayed silent.
he continued. "why can't i talk about how much i love my best friend? why can't i tell you the little things i notice about you? why can't you just look at me?"
"because!" you exclaimed suddenly. you cleared your throat awkwardly when you garnered a few looks. you spoke again in a lower tone.
"it makes me feel things- things i shouldn't be feeling for a friend."
"well, i would hope not. i'm not just your friend, i'm your best friend."
"but that's the thing, sunoo," you sighed. "sometimes, i feel like i don't want to be just best friends. i look at you and see someone with a sweet smile, and with an even sweeter personality. i've never met someone who's as pretty on the inside as they are on the outside.
"when i look at you, it feels like the world is clearer, easier to bear. when i look at you, i see someone i want to spend the rest of my life with - someone i love."
sunoo was silent for a moment.
and you were so scared that you messed it up, your friendship. you couldn't stand the deafening absence of his voice, overtaken by the crackle of the flames and background voices.
just when you were about to stand up to go hide in your room, he finally spoke up.
"are you the original anonymous sender?"
you froze in place.
"you are, aren't you?"
"how... how did you figure it out?"
"i wasn't entirely sure at first. but like i said earlier, i've been trying to gather details from your previous letters.
"in the second letter you'd sent, you mentioned my hair was soft and fluffy. i don't really let anyone touch my hair, because they'd definitely ruin it," he rolled his eyes. "well, except you. but i figured the sender probably meant it looked soft and fluffy, so i just brushed it off.
"but then things started to add up. one time, the letter smelled like dittany, which we had made in herbology just that previous friday. another time, i noticed that the 'addressed to' writing at the front used navy blue ink, instead of black or blue. you're the only person i know who uses that colour.
"and then, when you fell sick recently, the letters stopped. but i was so worried for you that i didn't even notice, until you mentioned it in your letter today.
"i realised it was most likely you when your letter said the word 'cutesy' in your howler today. i've known you for years, you think i wouldn't have noticed the way you speak?" he laughed quietly.
"so.. you knew this whole time?"
"i suspected it, but not definitely."
"and you never told me."
"i didn't want to force a confession out of you," he admitted. "i wanted you to tell me yourself."
"so now what?" you asked. you still weren't sure where his own feelings lay. sure, he knew that you were the not-so-secret admirer, but did he like you?
every time you saw him smiling at another letter (even if it was howling in his face on a monday morning), you felt even more scared to tell him how you felt. you watched as he came to like the anonymous sender, and not you. he had created his own persona for the sender, and it was definitely not you. you were scared that he would be disappointed to find out it was you after all, and not his dream person.
"you're over thinking again," he said simply.
"can you blame me?"
"for the record, i love you too," he said, setting the cup down and taking your hands in his. "you didn't have to resort to howling at me to get my attention, or something like that. i've only ever looked at you. and i will only ever look at you; in my world, you're the only one in it."
tears leaked out of your eyes. "so i did all of that for nothing?"
sunoo laughed and wiped your cheeks, caressing them with the soft touch of his thumbs. "no, nothing like that! i realised my feelings for you when i got that first howler, because when i pictured who might be behind those red letters, i could only imagine you. the thought of it being anyone else made me cringe."
"what if it wasn't me?" you pouted playfully.
"then i would have rejected them, if they ever confessed to me for real. and i would have loved you with my whole being, even if you never liked me back."
"you would have cried yourself to sleep every night," you laugh, a croak in your voice from crying just moments ago. you know him too well.
"you're right! so thank god that wasn't the case." sunoo hugged you tighter, and you wrapped your arms around his middle. a satisfied sigh escapes your lips.
right then, you also thank whatever being out there let you meet your best friend. and you're grateful that you can give sunoo all of your love without holding back - not-so-secretly anymore.
