Afterglow

You always looked your softest when the sky turned gold like sunsets loved you too. Like the day refused to end until it traced light across your cheek one more time.

And I watched you not like someone watching the sun set, but like someone who knows they’ll miss the warmth the moment it’s gone.

You didn’t say much then. You never had to. Even your silence felt like a melody only I could hear.

You leaned into the wind, hair dancing, eyes quiet. And I swear, in that moment, if love had a color it would have been you.

There’s something in the way you just exist so calmly, so deeply, like you’re not part of the world, but its reason to slow down.

And if this life is just sunsets and shadows, light and fading, then let me love you in the in-between where the sun still touches your skin and everything feels like forever for just one more second.

i need to get more slutty. more iconic. more wistfully optimisic. to take no bullshit, to wear crop tops, to headbang to rock songs. i need to get the fuck over myself. i need to go walking in the afternoon. to make lists of things my friends are. to lie on the floor and stare at the ceiling. i need to listen to the imagine dragons best of playlist all the way through like i used to do half a decade ago and feel slightly disdraught about the humanity of living. i need to change my sheets and clean my room. i need to look at tooth gaps and smile lines and think softly about human beings existing and loving. i need to let my friends know i adore them and figure out what i'm making for dinner and be the best worker i can be and say go fuck yourself to nobody. i need to pat my dog and paint my nails and put lipgloss on my split lip and turn on some colourful lights. and curl up in a ball and hope it'll be ok.

We used to be much bigger than the lives we led

And now the lives we lead are the puppet masters

We used to be gods

Creators

Innovators

We were the masters of all that we could see and beyond

We were vast and powerful

We were everything and everything bow to us

Then we fell from heaven

We toppled out of our own brain,

Crashing towards our toes

On the ground

In the muck

Forgetting who we were

Forgetting what we were

The heights we reached were now out of our comprehension

It all faded away

We shrunk to half our size

As we had to turn to more trivial things

Like breathing

Eating

Drinking

All things for lesser lifeforms than we were

But we forgot 

And we haven’t remembered where we came from

We’ll never reach the Olympus we built

Never again

We lost it all

And why, did we fall?

So long ago

The amount of time that has passed would be nothing more than a blink in our former glory

We fell because we climbed so high

We reached the peak

And there as nothing on the other face

The mountain side we had built up was one sided

There were no safety rails

And we failed

When we fell, our wings burned in the atmosphere

Our minds crumbling on impact

incomprehensible to the local elements

Not meant for the primitive earth

Where the atmosphere conceals the greater outer space

Making us forget of the greater heights

The sharper dangers

Turning our eyes downwards to our hands, our tasks, the people around us

Making us forget

We’ll never remember

There is something so good about the setting sun light. The rising sun shines on what the day holds, on the hopes for errands to be run or breakfast waiting to be made. The fading light is a sweet kiss for a job well done. It is confirmation that time has passed, and it is a tease for what sunrise may hold. It is a lingering hug before you rest under the moon, and it is so proud of you. I am too.
