(I’m not exactly sure if this counts cause it’s more of a mental thing but anyhoo)
Joel is a shapeshifter. This normally isn’t much of a problem, but shapeshifters are a rare species with only about 1,000 individuals existing across all servers. Because of this rarity, when creating the life games, the watchers implemented magic that wiped memories from each species the different players were, except for the winners. Because of his rarity in species, only part of his memories were erased. He remembers a majority of the games, while other non-winners only remember vague feelings or snippets of emotional memories to allow the watchers to feed off of stronger emotional reactions in following games.
This situation causes Joel to isolate himself after the games and makes him more irritable and avoidant when others try to get him to open up about the games.
