Out of the modern musical abyss comes Jackson Scott, a 22-year-old artist living in Asheville, NC. Finding pure metaphysical euphoria within the depths of cassette recorders and guitar pedals, he enjoys the simple things in life such as playing music with friends and falling into existential voids. After touring extensively in 2013 for his debut album Melbourne, released on Fat Possum Records, Jackson returned home to record an album that he could listen to in absolutely any negative or positive state of mind. His second album Sunshine Redux is a translation of this paradoxical psyche, a kaleidoscope of sounds ranging from 60’s flower power to 90’s hip-hop production techniques. Veering from nihilistic punk rock explosions to gentle sonic nightmares, it is his most cohesive musical undertaking yet.

"Pacify" - Jackson Scott

The release of Jackson Scott's Melbourne in 2013 had everything an independent musician needed to succeed on the Internet: the hiss of tape recordings, a mysteriously sudden appearance, and a lifetime debt to Bradford Cox's popularity, whether Scott grew up on Deerhunter or not. (Scott says no, but the venn diagram between early Deerhunter records and Melbourne is just one gigantic circle, so there's that.) 

"Pacify" is our first fuzzed-out glimpse into the Scott's second record, Sunshine Redux, but the context is a little different. The record's being released through Bloodmoss Records, instead Fat Possum, which was responsible for the wide release of Melbourne. Jackson Scott is also no longer a mysterious Internet anomaly. NPR premiered his new single "Pacify," and he's been the recipient of critical acclaim and expectation for some time. No pressure, Scott. 

It's fortunate that Scott's sharp guitar crackles of "Pacify" prove he's going to edge himself further into this familiar, beloved soundscape. His fragile and warped rasps disappear under his unrelenting charge into the squeaky guitar, but a smooth slowdown near the end of the song unfurls into something more than just a race to distorted bliss. Just like when he pitched his vocals to craft a haunting retelling of Sandy Hook, "Pacify" illustrates how Jackson loves to carve out very specific, detailed pieces to disappear into.

It's been a year and a half since Jackson Scott's excellent debut, Melbourne, made it's way to our ears. In that time, the album has never been far from my regular rotation - routinely finding some of it's tracks creeping onto mixtapes for friends and playlists for work or travel. Alas, after a while you inevitably get the craving for something new and exciting. Just like that, lightning strikes and brings new music from the talented artist as well as news of the new full length follow-up. Sunshine Redux drops in the Spring, and with it comes a bit of a stylistic change as the artist embraces new sounds and influences. This time around finds Scott dipping into everything from summery 60's psych pop to late 80's noise pop and even talk of 90's hip-hop production influences. The first taste comes in the form of the noise pop beauty, "Pacify", which sways from foot stomping power pop melodies to nightmarish sonic waves and back again effortlessly. It's a fascinating first taste and an exciting peek at what's to come. Definitely an album to be on the lookout for when it drops in late April from Bloodmoss Records.
