More Huntrix in Faerûn. :)
Mira: "Why didn't you tell us about this?!"
Rumi: "How could I?! We had a plan to fix it! To fix me, with the golden Honmoon!"
Zoey: "We... we would have listened if you told us Rumi! Do you, do you have more secrets you haven't told us?"
Karlach: "Hey, calm down girls! This might be related to something the hag did. Take it from someone who was forced to fight for one of the Archdevils in the Hells; don't be too quick to judge."
Gale: "In this case I think Mira and Zoey have some valid concerns, Karlach. There is no trace of Mystra's weave on her, nor the magic of the Fey. Whatever Ethel did, it didn't change Rumi, merely dispelled an illusion."
Gale: "If I may ask, what exactly is the nature of these demon patterns you refer to? And the change in her left eye. Any solution we will find must come from first understanding the issue."
Zoey: "I don't know what to think! All we have ever been taught is that everything that has these patterns are demons who wants to eat human souls and tear open the Honmoon so their king can come through and rule our world. And eat more souls."
Mira: "And now we find out our best friend has been lying about being-"
Rumi: "I'm not one of them! I'm not, I swear! Mira, please! You know me! Zoey! I would never work for Gwi'ma! I want to protect our world, to make the Honmoon golden and seal away the demons!"
Karlach: "Alright, I don't deny this is some serious shit you're going through but I have seen you fight. It's really hard to lie when you're fighting for your life, and Rumi is one of the good ones. I'd stake my engine on it!"
Gale did a series of gestures and spoke a few words as he held out a hand towards Rumi, who flinched instinctively.
Zoey and Mira reflexively started to bring their weapons up to defend her, then faltered, uncertain.
The spell flowed over Rumi, flecks of gold glittering across her skin and clothes for a few moments before disappearing.
Gale: "Well, for what it's worth, Rumi posses none of the signature markers of someone who eats souls. In fact she shows no sign of someone even capable of it. By the standards of any magic that I know, and my knowledge on the subject is quite vast."
Rumi looked at Zoey and Mira, her eyes wet but no tears falling.
Rumi: "How could I say anything? Our faults and fears must never be seen. Look at me! I am a fault, a mistake. Have been since the moment I was born."
Karlach visibly bristled, reaching out to hug Rumi and then remembered herself, pulling back before she could scorch her. "Nine Hells girl! That's not true! You can't help how you're born! It's what you do that decides if you're good or a complete shithead! You're a good person!"
Shadowheart had not spoken a word during the unfolding situation, but her eyes and ears were following every word and motion with wariness and keen interest.
Lae'zel spoke up for the first time, having also been a silent observer until now. "Your debate about your natures will have to wait. A hag is an enemy that you cannot allow to escape, and make no mistake the hag is now our enemy. We must give chase and kill her."
Gale nodded in agreement. "I wouldn't have put it quite so bluntly, but I fear Lae'zel's judgement is correct. A green hag is a formidable adversary, and they are famous for holding grudges."
The situation was clearly not resolved, but Mira nodded and a beat behind her Zoey did too. Karlach led the way through the fireplace, the illusion once shielding the entrance the a tunnel with stairs behind it now gone.
The atmosphere was tense as they descended the stairs and as they stepped onto the floor, Ethel stepped out from a shadowed alcove to meet them.
"Well well, I see I made a mistake in thinking you had anything useful between those ears. This is my home and you-!"
Karlach interrupted. "Where's that girl, Mayrina? We're getting her out of here!"
Ethel ignored her and focused on Rumi.
Ethel: "So how did things go? Isn't it much better now that you have cleared the air, little demon?"
Rumi glared at the hag. "I'm not a demon! My father was one, but I am a hunter, like my mother!"
She heard Zoey gasp behind her but didn't dare take her eyes of Ethel, who grinned toothily in response.
"Well if you don't want to have anything to do with your demon heritage, I can pluck that pretty peeper out of your skull. The eye of a demon mongrel has many uses."
For a moment Rumi hesitated. She didn't relish the thought of loosing an eye, but if it meant she could be rid of her demonic side? Perhaps it was worth-
An arrow with the tip glowing purple whizzed past her head, fired from Lae'zel's bow and going straight for the hag's head.
Ethel raised a hand and the arrow bounced harmlessly off the magical barrier she had just made.
"That was a very stupid move, githyanki." the hag snarled. She raised a hand and in a flash of green energy teleported away.
Carefully the group advanced into the natural grotto. Their lightsources soon illuminated the alcoves along the walls, revealing one horror after the other.
The cruelty visited on the people was unlike anything Huntrix had seen except from what Celine had told them of the demon king himself. Mira's grip was whiteknuckled on her gok-do.
Karlach shot her a sympathetic glance. "I know it's bad, but don't worry. We can take her!"
Rumi didn't say anything, but she knew it wasn't fear that made Mira grip her weapon so tightly. She was angry, bottling it up until she could unleash it on the hag.
Zoey was more visibly affected, looking very sad especially over the dead elven woman who had her eyes plucked out.
Gale reached out to put an supportive hand on her shoulder.
"There are many cruel people and wicked magic being done in this world Zoey, but never forget that there are good people who perform great feats with that same magic too. Thanks to us, both the tieflings and the druids were saved from a fate much like this."
In a final touch before they got the door to Ethel's inner lair to open, Rumi was hit by a spell, a red glow flickering over her skin and making her stagger, nausea gripping her.
"Auagh... Oh no... I feel like I ate a kimbap that's been laying out in the sun for two weeks."
Shadowheart examined her, concluding that it wasn't anything lethal but that they also didn't have anything available, magical or mundane, that could cure her.
Rumi gritted her teeth, bent over a bit but determined.
"We continue. I feel sick, but I can fight. What Lae'zel said is right, we must take her down."
