The Baker: 9-21-20

Gale drove to Miss Baker’s that night, and unlike everyone thought afterwards, it was a normal October night. Cold with a faint mist with dots of silver splashed across the dark sky, no chance of rain until the next day.

She was still fuming from Sophie’s words, how could she not? Sophie didn’t understand, she couldn’t understand. Miss Baker was Gale’s teacher, Gale’s first friend, and Gale’s mother figure. She could not turn a blind eye to the woman, not after teaching her the passions of her life.

The pine trees surrounding the road grew larger and larger as she drove, leaving nettles and sap to drip from the branches to leave its floral scent in the night. Gale drove with her bright lights on as she feared more than anything hitting a creature passing through the road. It had happened before and it sure could happen again.

“Three pizzas it is,” Sophie murmured, “Meat lovers?”

“Yep, Garlic cheese?”

“Read my fuckin’ mind. Pineapple and pepperoni?”

Gale wrinkled her nose, “You can have that one.”

Sophie smirked, “You’ll eat raw oysters, snails, and frog’s legs, but pineapple on pizza crosses the line?”

“I love pizza, I love pineapple, but they should never mix…” Gale muttered.

Sophie leaned in closer and whispered, “You’ll be married to someone who likes pineapple pizza, so better get used to it sweetheart.”

Gale gave an amused gaze in return, “I can live with it, if you can live with the fact I like anchovies.”
