During a financial update, Warner Bros.' CEO, David Zaslav, made comments that may suggest a Superman game is under consideration.
About damn time!! I've been waiting for a Superman game for years!!
Just wanted to save this link of a dev going into Factor 5’s planned Superman game that was killed by the Great Recession.
I'm glad I came across the initial tweet on Twitter and was able to get it more attention by posting it to the Superman subreddit. God what could have been. If only Superman Returns hadn't been a disappointment. If only the Great Recession hadn't killed this game. If only Busiek and Johns hadn't bailed on the Superbooks. Might this have been the shot in the arm that Superman needed at the time? Using the DCAU is not my ideal base for obvious reasons, but damnit I would've sucked it up and enjoyed this, I enjoyed the Superman Returns game for God's sake. I'm not as picky as some of my fellow Superman fans when it comes to Superman's representation in video games, especially when his only other representation currently is being a fucking villain. Seeing a developer talk about how they had cracked a method for making Superman's gameplay enjoyable makes me depressed they never got to finish it, but also a tad bit hopeful that perhaps we may yet see another attempt.
Which studio would you want to do a Superman game?
Insomniac would be the dream but that's not happening. Of the studios under WB's umbrella, I suspect that WB Montreal will be the ones who attempt to make one if any of them ever do.
Since you wrote about the canceled Factor 5 Superman game. I wanted to ask about your thoughts on the Rocksteady Superman game which has been turned into the upcoming Suicide Squad game thanks to WB execs being imbecilic asswipes when it comes to Superman.
First time I heard about that I was furious. Now I'm more uncertain how to feel. Obviously I'd take damn near anyone (except NRS) making a Superman game, but there's reason to think Rocksteady wouldn't be a good fit. Are the developers there fans of his actual comics? Arkham drew mainly from the DCAU - which to be fair was also going to be a big influence on the Factor 5 game - but RS did take inspiration from the Batman comics while also putting their own spin on the franchise. Would they do the same with Superman or just half-ass it? They're an edgy bunch, Arkham Batman is one of the biggest assholes of any Batman ever. Kinda suspect they would compensate for Superman's "perfect" reputation by doubling down on the DCAU characterization for him which I don't want.
Then there's the story. Hot take but RS's best plot was in Asylum, City and Knight just don't hold up as well. Could they come up with a good plot for Superman, a character I'm sure they feel nowhere near as much enthusiasm as they did for Batman? What about gameplay, Factor 5 put serious thought into how to make a Superman game "feel" authentic and be fun too. I've said before that the gameplay mechanics for the Squad look like they just broke up Superman's abilities across four characters, is that on point? Is the Squad showing us what a Superman game would play like from RS? All of this is stuff I'd have a better handle on if we know what exactly was in their pitch and why it was rejected. Maybe their pitch actually sucked, can't know without more details.
I wager though that WB rejected it simply because they don't believe a Superman game can work regardless of what the details are, and I only hope Zaslav's ascendance may have caused a shake up in the gaming department that will open the door for Superman to get another shot.
