Question: (I mean I can look it up but I want to chat) do you know what line up Tristan is for goalie? (I don't even know if I said that right) *Jarry I should include his last name shouldn't I 😂
Tristan Jarry is in the position that’s more or less called “3rd-string” or secondary backup that basically means if Murray or Fleury were to be sick or injured and unable to play, he would dress in the backup goalie position - if the coaches knew ahead of time and there was enough time to get him there for the game! Usually Jarry is not up with the Penguins and is instead the starting goalie for the Penguins’ AHL team, the wilkes-barre scranton penguins, and he did very well there this year!
That’s why we saw him on the bench backing up Flower early in the playoffs when Murray was hurt. He was called up from the minors specifically for that (well, and he also started in the last regular-season NHL game this year since a win was completely irrelevant to the standings and he’d earned a chance to step up onto the big stage).
This is easier in the later portion of the playoffs because at this point he and the management are not worried about having anyone playing goalie the WBS Pens since their AHL season and playoff run is over, so right now he’s hanging out with the rest of the guys who aren’t dressing for the games but are available and on hand for the next game if someone gets hurt. Goalies are a special category though so he can technically dress in the middle of a game and come out and play if somehow both Flower and Murray got hurt too badly to keep playing. So he’s there, making sure he’s ready to go even if he’s not playing.
As for what will happen in the future for him… The Pens’ goalie situation is complicated, to say the least, given the expansion draft mucking everything up. If we lose a goalie in the expansion draft, he’ll have a chance at becoming the backup goalie to our first-string goalie that remains, but that would mean he’d likely play significantly less than if he remains in 3rd string since he’d be starting goalie down in the AHL but would only come in for back-to-backs or injury up in the NHL.He’s good but he’s still got room for improvement. Still, he’s young (22) and has time to mature in his position and get ready for the big leagues - he’s still in the middle of his Entry Level Contract (he’s not eligible for the expansion draft because of that)so he has another year with the Penguins org at least. Other than that, who knows at this point!
