Josei Manga That Deserve Anime Adaptations
OK LISTEN UP ANIMATION STUDIOS!!! 📢 There are INCREDIBLE josei manga out there just BEGGING to be animated! After falling down a rabbit hole from this amazing guide to josei anime, I realized how many brilliant manga are still waiting for their anime spotlight!
The Josei Manga Adaptation Wishlist
Kakukaku Shikajika - Akiko Higashimura's autobiographical manga about her journey to become a mangaka under a harsh but brilliant art teacher. It's funny, heartbreaking, and REAL. The art style shifts would translate beautifully to animation!
Suppli - A 30-something advertising executive balancing career ambitions with romance after her long-term relationship ends. The workplace drama! The realistic dating struggles! WHY hasn't this been animated yet??
Tramps Like Us (Kimi wa Pet) - A high-powered career woman takes in a young dancer as her "pet." It's WAY less weird than it sounds and explores gender expectations, career pressure, and unconventional relationships in such a nuanced way.
Helter Skelter - Kyoko Okazaki's dark psychological drama about a top model who undergoes extensive plastic surgery to maintain her career. As her body begins to deteriorate, so does her mental state. This would be STUNNING as a psychological horror anime.
In the Clear Moonlit Dusk (Otonari ni Ginga) - A girl who looks like a handsome boy meets a boy who looks like a beautiful girl. Their friendship and eventual romance explores gender expectations in such a heartfelt way!
Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu (The Full-Time Wife Escapist) - Already has a live-action but deserves an anime! A woman becomes a "contractual wife" for a businessman, and their arrangement slowly develops into real feelings. PEAK slow-burn romance!
I'm literally BEGGING animation studios to look beyond shounen/shoujo and give these complex, adult stories the adaptations they deserve!
What josei manga would YOU most want to see animated? Drop your picks in the notes! ✨
