Sorry you have to put up with my spazzing, but GEM has always been a precious gem (literally)-- ever since stumbling her first few hits. And hearing her new album (first one after leaving her old company), I seriously can’t be any happier and proud of her!! It will only go up from here.
All her songs tell a story ;;;;; and it makes your heart break for her (or feel empowered or fluffy depending on the song). In her title song “句號” (Full Stop), she basically summarizes her journey with her ex-manager / agency. She was first scouted from a school performance at age 13; also when she wrote her first hit “睡公主” (Sleeping Princess). To her, her ex-manager was everything (in Full Stop she has a line that said “aside from my father, you were the man that I trusted the most”). She truly believed their bond was like family and really grateful for him seeing potential in her -- in order for her to become who she is today. GEM became really popular after participating in China’s “I am Singer.” (I still remember spazzing about that on this blog when it was airing). Her schedule started becoming super packed -- sponsorships (some bad ones), lied to having to pay for her concert ads, doing concerts after concerts (count of 40) without getting a penny. In the song she doesn’t convey hatred for this man, because there’s still a hint of gratefulness of how it started. But she realizes this is pure business and as she mentioned, “You said I was a commodity. Without you, I am nothing. These twisted words almost destroy my confidence.” [me: wtf??? that’s so manipulative?? gtfo]
Note: This song title is call “依然睡公主“ (Still Sleeping Princess / Still That Girl). She is telling her fans, she is still that 13 year girl who wrote “Sleeping Princess.” Just now “the child was forced to grow up,” but “she won’t betray her promise to herself” “she won’t life a life without her dreams.” This song has a lot of that hotblood!fightagainst the world vibe.
Did I mention this girl wrote all the music and lyrics to her new album?? ;;;;;;;
