Kamadhenu (early 20th century), made in Tamil Nadu, India
Kamadhenu (Sanskrit: कामधेनु, [kaːmɐˈdʱeːnʊ], Kāmadhenu), also known as Surabhi (सुरभि, Surabhi or सुरभी, Surabhī), is a divine bovine-goddess described in Hinduism as the mother of all cows. She is a miraculous cow of plenty who provides her owner whatever they desire and is often portrayed as the mother of other cattle. In iconography, she is generally depicted as a white cow with a female head and breasts, the wings of a bird, and the tail of a peafowl or as a white cow containing various deities within her body. Kamadhenu is not worshipped independently as a goddess. Rather, she is honored by the Hindu veneration of cows, who are regarded as her earthly embodiments.
Women in Mahabharata - Surabhi
Surabhi is hailed as a mother-goddess affiliated with various livestock. In Mahabharata, multiple stories of her birth are presented, both in relevance with amrita. Once she is described as a sister of Lakshmi and Sura, born during the churning of the milk ocean, and the other stories describe her a daughter of Brahma.
Her daughter Nandini is kidnapped by the eight Vasus which eventually leads to the birth of Bheeshma.
Another famous story relating to her is narrated by Vyasa, to console his oldest son Dhritarashtra, where her compassion for the weakest members of her cattle-children is explored.
Many other rather problematic stories place her under the 'ownership' of various rishis, from who she or her children is taken by kings who are then punished. The most famous story along this line leads to the murder spree of Parashurama after his father is killed by a king or a prince over this issue.
Even though her iconography usually involves a hybrid-bovine form, I still chose to show her in a human form.
