Alice in the Park – Autumn and the Field

This field seems enchanted. That's what Alice began to think. Think about it. The field is long. It's hard to tell how long you've been walking along it. Everything is the same. As if a fragment is repeating itself. Dry grass all around. It's good that at least you can see someone here sometimes.

And the path is almost straight. Like a straight line. Or rather, the path is, of course, crooked. It's not straight. But it is essentially a straight line. It curves slightly from one side to the other. Everything here is growing. Only it's already autumn.

Wow. I wish I could see this field in the summer, Alice suddenly thought. Indeed. What a wonderful idea. The field will be incredibly beautiful in the summer. Large. And green. There must be lots of different flowers here. And lots of green, tall grass. A wonderful and beautiful place. But that's in the summer!

And now it's autumn here. And a cold breeze is blowing. Dark skies. Dark yellow grass. Dark orange. And things as dry as branches. That's grass. But it's already dry. Just think, the grass has dried out and become like branches.

And so Alice walks. And strides. Step by step. Sometimes, for fun, she takes slow steps. And sometimes she takes long strides. And she laughs. How much more cheerful it suddenly is. Calm and quiet. The wind is cool. But very fresh. It's nice to breathe. It's like the fresh air in early autumn. And everything is yellow. Grass. Only there are no leaves in sight.

The wind blew really cold. Alice had never seen anything like it here before. It blew really hard and blew for a full ten seconds. Without stopping. And then everything became quiet again. It is autumn after all. Perfectly clear. What's completely unclear is how Alice, simply striding forward from the forest with its still quite summer grass and dense thickets, came to an autumn field. A summer forest. And an autumn field. What an adventure!

The clouds in the sky have changed. Darker. And the light has clearly diminished. Here and there, there might even be dark purple clouds. But those don't happen. It must be an optical illusion. It's gotten darker. That's for sure. The weather here is also changing dramatically. Like an enchanted field. But the sky is quite beautiful. Even dark. Alice realized she hadn't seen a sky like this in a long time.

She thought the field was so dry. And it hadn't rained here for a long time. What a surprise. Rain might start. In a couple of hours. Alice really hoped to reach the end of this field. And not get caught in the rain. But so far, there was no rain. The clouds had simply gotten darker.

She walked on. The wind became a little cooler. It became very fresh. Beautiful, fresh air. And dark skies. Alice quickened her pace. Just in case, she wanted to avoid the rain. Although it was still a long way off. Or so Alice thought.

The branches seemed to whisper in the wind. Just the tongue of dry branches. Or rather, dried grass. Which began to look like drips. Alice didn't know. It was some kind of strange language. One she'd never thought about before.

She glanced at the sky. There are dark clouds. And there, further on, it's bright again. These are light clouds. Just like day. Covered in clouds. It's even brighter there than it was while she was walking here. It's definitely autumn here. Now Alice is sure of it. The wind is driving all these clouds somewhere. And they are changing. From one type to another. From dark to light. It's beautiful and interesting here in its own way. Under different skies. This field will be completely different. But autumnal. At least for now. Alice figured that out.

“Nimitz House”

The Nimitz House was built in 1900 on Goat Island, now Yerba Buena Island, as a residence for the Commandant of a Naval Training Station.

Officially known as Quarters One, the Classical Revival home got its nickname from Admiral Chester Nimitz, a World War II naval hero who spent his last days there.

In 1998, the house became a bizarre flashpoint in the construction of the new Bay Bridge when the Navy refused to let Caltrans engineers onto Yerba Buena Island. Why? Their design called for a span that would cast a shadow on the Nimitz House.

Construction didn’t restart for a year and a half as the plans were redrawn to ensure the historic home would remain in the sun.
