Surviving Grief: A Gentle Guide to Living After Loss
Grief is one of the most profound human experiences, yet it is often misunderstood and rarely spoken about openly. In Surviving Grief: A Gentle Guide to Living After Loss, author Sonya L. Barber Clayton, DNP shares a deeply personal and compassionate reflection on navigating life after loss. This powerful book does not attempt to “fix” grief or rush healing. Instead, it offers gentle guidance and understanding for those learning how to live again while carrying love and memory forward.
Grief book Final Through honest storytelling and reflective prompts, the book explores the emotions many people experience but struggle to express—loneliness, anger, guilt, fear, and the quiet courage required simply to keep going.
Readers will find support in chapters that explore: • The reality of grief and how it changes us • Navigating triggers and difficult days • Releasing expectations around how grief “should” look • Honoring the memory of loved ones • Finding permission to live and experience joy again
Surviving Grief is not a roadmap with deadlines—it is a compassionate companion for anyone walking through loss.
A meaningful read for anyone seeking comfort, understanding, or supporting someone through grief.

Grief...is real
Webster defines grief as a deep sadness caused especially by someone's death, a cause of deep sadness or trouble or annoyance.
Recently life reminded me of the realness of grief. One situation happened and before I knew it more news followed and it grieved my heart. Sometimes people experience grief and are unaware. So in my time of grieving loss and change I wanted to encourage you on how you can manage the ball of emotions that grief brings.
First we want to acknowledge that grief is inevitable. Living this life we will experience grief by way of: a heartbreak, marriage in turmoil, personal illness, pregnancy, death of a loved one, change in general, separation anxiety, loss of employment, relocation, homelessness and the list goes on. Although it is inevitable, it does not mean that we cannot survive it.
Second, grief is intended to make us stronger. I know, you are wondering how will I become stronger from this sadness? Some years ago, I was on summer break. I had just completed my sophomore year of undergrad and was set to begin my junior year less than a month away. However, during the break my Mom was in the hospital as she was dealing with complications from a surgery. I always thought if something happened to my Mom that I would need a white jacket. We talked every day, several times a day and now my lifeline was gone. Interestingly when I received word that she had passed that Saturday morning, I wanted to sleep. God had given me a peace. Now, I still had some frustrations and conflicted thoughts on her being gone; however it was in that time that I had to grow. Thirteen years later I reflect on Whitney Houston’s song - I didn’t know my own strength. What I thought would take me out motivated me to continue to achieve my dreams.
Lastly, overcoming grief helps us to inspire others. So, following my mother’s passing I now needed somewhere to live. I did not feel that I was to return to Philadelphia, so I went back to school in Maryland to complete my undergrad program. The church I was attending at the time had a shelter, Second Chance. Talk about a humbling experience. Within two years I was able to move out into my own two bedroom apartment. Fast forward some years and I am able to humbly tell you that I am a home owner of a 3 bed room home. This was ONLY made possible by GOD. Tears fill my eyes as I share and this is only a snippet.
What is your point Jen? Glad you asked. My point is that even though life can send you some fast balls, strike you out and may even give you fouls from time to time, you can make it through. Yes, that situation, person, place or thing caught you off guard. I am here to encourage you that you can make it. The event has happened, honor your feelings related to the experience and seek support as you work to keep pressing forward. You do not have to face experiences of grief alone. Seek God, obtain professional help as needed and vent to those you trust. We are human and the feelings we feel are real, we just daily work to manage them appropriately.
Be encouraged. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning (Psalms 30:5).
