Ryuugajou Nanana no Maizoukin/ Nanana’s Buried Treasures

Synopsis: After being disowned and exiled by his family, high school student Juugo Yama arrives on this island, happy to finally be free of his father. Upon moving into his new room, he discovers the ghost of Nanana Ryuugajou, bound to the island after her unsolved murder 10 years ago. Nanana tells Juugo that, just before her death, she hid items with unique and mysterious powers all across the island—items known as the Nanana Collection. Hoping to uncover clues that will help him find the culprit behind her death, Juugo, with the help of self-proclaimed "Master Detective" Tensai Ikkyuu and her cross-dressing maid Daruku Hoshino, sets out on his search.

My Thoughts?: Really good anime! However, seeing as there hasn’t been any confirmation for a second season, it’s pretty unfulfilling to watch since there are only 11 episodes. It has great characters, and a surprisingly morally ambiguous main character. Honestly, this is an anime genuinely wish there was more of because it has all the makings of being (I tried to think of a good word but, I’m not eloquent so) a dope ass anime. The fact that it isn’t complete really puts a damper on things honestly. I mean, it even has monkey brain points for pretty colors!!

Overall... dude. Raw score, 7/10 for not being finished BUT if it was, easily 9/10.

Man, I’m honestly really glad I had my history class before Joker Game came out. Not that it mattered 100% because my history class never really touched on espionage, but I did know locations and general events taking place in this historic anime. Yay context!

This anime is set before WW2 begins in the Japanese spy agency the D-Agency run by Lieutenant Colonel Yuuki. To die or to kill are the worst choices a spy can make, and this agency does global espionage throughout the 30s, leading up to WW2 with the eight spies on their team. It’s a heart-racing, exciting spy drama.

I think Joker Game wasn’t talked about a whole lot this season. I thought it was pretty great, all things considered coming from Production IG, a company that is known primarily for their CG prowess. This anime doesn’t skip the CG one bit, but it certainly showcases a bit more than it to really shine in a league of its own.

Aside from its animation, which I’ll talk about in a moment, Joker Game had some great writing and awesome characters. Every episode was a twist and a turn, the characters were likable and I never had a clue where it was going. It was also episodic and didn’t rely too heavily on a through-plot like most anime does, rather, it was a spy game of cat and mouse. I only watch a spy movie once every few months, it’s not my favorite genre, and while the action isn’t all crazy technology and explosions, it’s pretty great.

The main weakness of the anime is probably the fact you can’t tell many of the characters apart at all, but it also could be a strength. The show is told out of order and plainly tells you what year and country it’s set in each episode, but it’s still rather hard to keep track of who is who in the agency. Everyone kinda looks the same except for a few defining features. More than a problem for me, it was just a little bit frustrating. I knew who my favorite characters were, I just had no idea what their names were. Not very important though, seeing as most if not all adopt fake names.

Production IG has been pretty great at popping out pretty beautiful anime for a while now. I’m floored by how much their CG had developed over the years, but a lot of this anime wasn’t showcasing that. In fact, it was only very obvious in small portions, like a chess game close up or crowds and vehicles. The detail was my favorite part. A character’s completion changing through stress or time, the puff of breath leaving a man as he walks outside in winter and other subtle details like that. I felt like there weren’t corners being cut.

My other only complaint would be that some of the character designs didn’t feel like they fit in the show. Thanks to all of the spies having brown to black hair, it seems liked this anime was heavily leaning on realism as its style, but then you get some REALLY weird caricature-like antagonists out of nowhere. Not sure who was in charge of that aspect…

Maturity warnings are really brief: it’s a spy anime. There’s drugs, murder, suicide, war, sex, etc. Generally, I’d say just be aware what you’re getting into.

I liked it a lot, and if you like historical or spy dramas, this is good one for you. There’s plenty of action, plenty of suspense, and in general, it’s a very beautiful anime. Hope you enjoy it!
