A whistling tea kettle brings Nia's thoughts back to the present. Ciara should arrive shortly. Her eyes sweep across her home for one final inspection. Everything's dusted and in its assigned place. The flowerpot and table runner are perfectly centered on the table, both gifts from Ciara for her hospitality. There's also a small writing desk and chair against one wall, furnishings that appeared one day but Ciara never explained how she found. She claimed that desk facilitated the writing of at least two academic articles (one that's just been accepted for publication).

Nia feels an odd note of pride over that.

If she's honest with herself, perhaps it's not so odd. The bond of friendship they formed that first night, one strengthened over the many nights Ciara has stayed here since then… it isn't so platonic for Nia now.

She'll never say that aloud, of course. Ciara is her friend, a friend who needs a place to stay in Deyr, a dear companion whenever she visits. It's hard enough to be a career-oriented woman in the current social climate. If word ever got out that Ciara was loved by another woman… it could ruin both of them.

Alas, these feelings not only persist but strengthen each time Ciara stays over, as if rebelling against her common sense and hard-earned place in society.

Anton was sprawled gracelessly across the sofa, jacket flung over the glass end table, tie knotted loosely around his neck. Even stone drunk, the disheveled look suited him — a day's worth of stubble and the shock of dark hair falling rakishly over his forehead only accentuated his charms, and for a moment all Monica could see was the handsome, ambitious history student who had so easily won her heart all those years ago. He gazed up at her through half-lidded eyes.

"You," he said, with the very precise enunciation he used when he was highly intoxicated and trying not to show it, "are the most incredible sight I've ever seen in my life."

There’s only so much perfunctory protesting Gus can do before he surrenders to Ewald’s touch, his hot hands sliding underneath his shirt, running rough across his chest and shoulders like he wants to claim his stake. It would be useless to pretend he’s never wanted this, never thought about how Ewald’s hands would feel on his body (frantic and insistent), how his hair would feel under Gus’s fingers (thick and stiff with his styling paste), how his voice would sound when they collapse onto the bed (raspy and thick with want).

“Fuck,” he pants when Ewald climbs on top of him. “Ewald–”

“You want this?” he says huskily. Is that a question or a statement? Ewald’s knee pushes roughly between Gus’s thighs until it rests against his crotch, pressing hard onto his cock. Gus whines, his hips jerking into the pressure. “The way you’ve been looking at me…”

What can he say to that? The desire in Ewald’s voice is so thick and heavy, it makes Gus’s head swim. This is better than anything he could ever take, making him feel so high, so powerful, so wanted. His mind turns off completely, his body taking over; he bucks his thigh into Ewald’s cock, feeling it already hard through the fabric of his trousers. The sound he makes is enough to convince him to do it again. Something like a strangled whine, almost a sob against his lips as Gus’s hands find the buttons of Ewald’s shirt. His own shirt is already hanging loose on his body, unbuttoned and half-untucked, but he longs to feel Ewald’s skin against his.

Her father sent her the ghost of a smile as she entered, straightening from where he'd stood leaning against the mantel with his back to the sitting area. He, too, was fully dressed, though he seemed just as tired as she felt. "There you are." He beckoned her closer and pulled her into a surprisingly tight hug. Relief lent her arms more strength than usual as she hugged him in return. "Well, Romus?" her grandmother said as her father released her. Vina glanced over to see her grandmother and great uncle seated as far apart from each other as they could reasonably get, both of them still in their nightclothes. "Stay," her father said past her shoulder rather than answer, and Vina turned to see Pabel halfway through backing politely out the door. "You were a key part of this, Pabel. Captain Gordion wouldn't have solved it without your help." "Of course, Your Majesty." Pabel bowed and came back into the room, shutting the door behind him. "And where is Captain Gordion?" Hugo asked. He looked from her father to Pabel and back with a neutral expression. "Surely the head of your security would be a better source than your butler for whatever it is you've called us here for at—" he glanced at his bare wrist and grimaced "—such an unusual hour." "Captain Gordion is taking care of an urgent, related matter," her father said. "This is a family meeting—yes, Your Grace?" Hugo blinked and looked away from Pabel again to hold Romus' gaze for a long moment. Vina glanced up at her father to see flint in his expression. "I didn't mean to interrupt, Your Majesty," her great-uncle eventually said. When Vina glanced back over at the sitting area, he'd averted his eyes. "I'm pleased to hear it." Her father's voice warmed slightly. "As I was saying, there's been a development regarding my father's death, and I wanted to make sure none of you were caught unawares by the Herald tomorrow. Or worse, the Voice of Rizia." "Oh, do stop dragging it out, Romus," her grandmother snapped. "What on earth do you have to tell us about Valero?"
