This was such an enjoyable episode!! It was written by a mysterious stranger named John Bring, who never wrote for the show before, and hasnt since. I feel like we really need this fella back! There is so much about this episode I liked and the only reason its not in my top 5 is because it was low drama, which is absolutely fine, #10 out of 297 episodes is a great spot to be!
Its a very nice, brothers only, MOTW.. Mr Bring kept so true to Sam and Dean, as well as canon, and the feeling of the series overall, that I was shocked to find out it was his first and last episode.
Sam and Dean are on the hunt for Jared Hayse, and the alleged monster who killed him, Black Bill. They find the victim’s buddy, smoking a joint outside of work, and I didnt see ANYONE comment on this, but, I THINK Dean takes a hit from it! The boy drops the joint when Sam and Dean introduce themselves as Feds, Dean picks it up off the ground, brings it to his mouth, there is a sniff/toke noise, and smoke escapes from his mouth as he says “Medicinal purposes right?” Now, he may only be sniffing it, but he wouldnt need to bring it that close to his nose to smell it, and if its just steam coming from his mouth because its cold, why is there no steam any other time?? Go ahead, watch the episode again and tell me what you think Dean did?? I think he took a hit :D
The boys look fantastic all through this episode. Sam and Dean are stunningly gorgeous men and I think the show should take advantage of this fact and highlight these boys!! I stole my icon from a scene from this episode even :)
The episode progresses nicely as a MOTW. Its not myth heavy at all, though we do have the bunker being searched by the BMOL to find out everything they can about the brothers, their allies, their habits, how Sam gets his hair so shiny, and how many ratty flannels Dean has. I find this very cute, I love when people talk about Sam’s pretty hair. We get a cute little broment snuck in as they check Dean’s night stand to fnd some beef jerky, some dice, some other stuff and a cassette tape of Bob Seger’s Night Moves, which gives us a mental flashback to that wonderful scene in “Baby” but the BMOL are there specifically to find The Colt, which the Winchesters took with them.
We are also given a bonus broment, when Sam and Dean pull up to the creepy house and Sam’s arm is behind Dean. Brother’s always drive like this right?
Inside the house, the boys are searching for stuff and find the basement is a full on murder room. I love Dean’s line “Why is it always the rich people? What, are they like ‘ Crocet is nice, but you know what would be great? MURDER!” Sheriff Bishop arives, and reveals it’s his family that had done the murders over the years, because they have a god held captive in the basement, Balak. but he’s a good guy, he didnt want to continue the murders, and hoped that if the god didnt get any more human blod, he’d die. Sam checks the underground cage they’re holding the god in, and finds he’s gone. Where is he? Good ole half brother Pete has him!!
Back at the meat packing plant, Pete kidnaps Dean and ties him up in the freezer. Brings on the big reveal that he’s goat dude and breaks the 4th wall a little “Thats what we do, hunting people, killing them... the family business!” And Dean’s like... srsly??
The episode gets a little tense here as Dean tries to fight Balak in the freezer, but its very cold, Dean seems a little disoriented, the red light intensifies the suspense, but just as the god is about to kill Dean... BANG!!!! Sam shoots him with The Colt!
Sam: Colt.... dusts anything (Sam Fucking Winchester to the rescue)
A nice broment follows when Sam squats down to check to see if Dean’s alright. Who doesnt love attentive!sam?? If you dont love him, you have no soul and you’re dead to me :P
Back home at the bunker, the boys sit in the library and start talking about their legacy. Who will remember them? What will the leave behind? Who will take over the bunker when theyre gone? (sniff) then one of the best moments in the whole season comes out of nowhere. Sam looks a bit meloncholy, and Dean feels it too, but he starts carving his initials in the table, and Sam’s face lights up!! “What are you doing?” “Leaving our mark” with a flash back to childhood, picked right out of Swan Song, both brothers carve their initials, Sam isnt terribly sentimental, but he’s loving this!! SW DW carved into the bunker table, like shown above. I CRIED!! That was just beautful!! Even the music in the background was touching. These initials remain in the table to this day, I check every time theyre in the library. This became an instant iconic moment.
So, this probably wasnt an overly valuable episode as far as the story went, but it surely reminded my heart as to why I love this show so much. Side characters are there, some good, some bad, but it will ALWAYS be about Sam and Dean. So, Im watching this episode again right now. If youre bored, you should too :)
