As of this evening on the 1st of October 2022, I completed reading In Search of Lost Time Volume I Swann’s Way~ By Marcel Proust of course It’s an accomplishment and a journey that thrilled me from the beginning, when I learned about the Proustian Moment! He has a few things in common with the Buddha. (: I have to confess I took this on during the initial year of the pandemic, so yes, it took me two years, but it was well worth the dedication. (Reading other books simultaneously) There’s such incredible attention and lavish detail. I plan to read Virginia Woolf’s, The Waves” next, but hope to be ready for the next volume, “In Search if Lost Time, Volume II, Within A Budding Grove,” after that. Who has read “Swann’s Way,” and what did you think? Who has read the complete set? What was that like? I’m very curious! It’s been brilliant so far. Are you a writer? I started reading Proust last year, foolishly thinking I was going to get through all 7 volumes by the end of the year. I made it halfway through vol two 😐. Decided to pick up where I left off and I have a feeling this handbook might come in... handy? I’ve had the full collection of, “In Search of Lost Time,” by Marcel Proust for years, but never opened them until getting away last week for my 60th birthday. Someone here on Instagram had posted about it sometime in the past six months or so, and the comments were enthusiastic. I chimed in and was encouraged. I guess I had been a little intimidated by the thought of getting through all 7 volumes if it was difficult reading. To my surprise and utmost delight, thus far, is that I couldn’t be more in alignment with his perceptions. His ability to capture nuances of human behavior is uncanny. Last night as I was reading the scenario with the Madeleine, that begins on page 60, I realized there was good reason for my alignment. I had to google to find out more, because I’m familiar with the yogic path, Buddhist path and a variety of mystical experiences and stories. I have read much over the years and engaged in these practices. How is it that the never knew that this series had to do with awakening, enlightenment, as well as the role of an artist in this journey. Here I am thinking I’m reading something different for a change, and I find this text expounds much of what I’ve been exposed to about realization. How is it that no one told me? There are books written comparing Proust to Buddhism. Now I wonder, how much he knew about eastern mysticism? Had he read about the Buddha, did he know Herman Hesse? Sorry, I’m late to the Proust awakening party, but I’m so curious and surprised. Perhaps it’s all in perfect play of timing, lost and regained. There is only one book I have ever stopped reading with no intention to finish and that is Eureka by Edgar Allan Poe. A shoutout to you if you've read it. Last year I DNF'd The Tale of Genji because it was too long, but I do hope to finish it someday. This year I gave up on the second book of Proust's The Rememberance of Things Past because I got halfway through, started reading some other books at the same time, and then forgot the characters and the plot and now feel I have to start again. The other book I didn't finish is the second book of Rumi's Masnavi. I'm curious about which books you guys gave up on this year.
