Is it because they haven't known they could do it or it's cause their souls got tampered to hell and back that they cant do it anymore?

The missing piece in this one is actually Gaster!

In (nearly) every other universe, Gaster ceases to exist, scattering everything he ever was or could be like dust in the wind, into the Void.

Which puts the things (and people) he left behind in an odd position of 'not supposed to exist.' But they do, and as load-bearing elements of the world--the CORE, Sans, Papyrus--they must continue to exist, even though the monster that made them is gone, both proactively and retroactively.

The universe abhors a vacuum.

So does the Void.

When Gaster ceased to exist, it left one such vacuum and the Void flowed in to fill in the cracks, like a kintsugi vase.

Most people lost memories, or found them altered to simply warp around the empty space Gaster left behind.

The skeleton brothers…discovered some new abilities.

But in the Fruition 'verses, none of that happened!

So Carmine (Underfell Fruition Sans) and Vi (Swapfell Fruition Sans) can't cut through time and space in the blink of an eye, and Tank (Underfell Fruition Papyrus) and Hunter (Swapfell Fruition Papyrus) can't look sideways at the world around them and perceive its building blocks to no-clip right through them.

Don't worry, they're still pretty, they have plenty of other stuff going for them!

Carmine, due to his…adjustments, generates magic at a ridiculous pace, to the point of being able to fire off bone-bullets and blasters seemingly bottomlessly.

He makes so much, in fact, that his extrasensory perception is through the roof and if he tunes into it just right, he can skim surface thoughts right out of peoples' heads--which you'd think would be why he seems to be so wholly, near-comically lucky, like he's just operating around the thoughts and intentions he's subconsciously gleaning from the people around him.

But no, that supernatural luck seems to be a separate Boon entirely, gut feelings and weird, off vibes that Just seem to come and go, steering him through and around trouble he'd otherwise walk into without that strange auspice. Eh, he doesn't question it much…

Tank is, of course, extremely strong, with more physical power at his disposal than any other monster he's ever heard of--even stronger than Asgore, and he's a Boss Monster.

His grasp on and control of magic is admittedly much weaker than it should be, but as a trade-off he's entirely immune to damage from intent, which is huge. A hate-filled blow that would dust another monster would only glance off of him, doing only as much damage as the physical power of the strike contains.

Not that he FIGHTs much anymore, but Underground he was an absolute powerhouse, reflective of his nickname. He never once lost an Encounter or let himself (or anyone with him) get hurt, moving through battles like he'd fought them a dozen times before, like he just knew exactly what to do and when. Oddly enough, Frisk had the same way about them, when they eventually fell down… Huh.

Vi, after Gaster's focus shifted to the stronger sibling, actually didn't undergo much Adjustment. He wasn't the central project, only a peripheral asset, so he wasn't much invested in. Still, he was practically born with a keen eye for detail, almost hyperattentive to outliers and discrepancies in data presented to him, making him an excellent analyst.

And even without enhancement, his ability to stealth and slip beneath peoples' notice is impressive, only more and more finely honed over the years. He can cross nearly any room without making a sound, utterly silent, and unless you're already looking for him, you'd never notice him in a crowd--whether it was a crowd of monsters or a crowd of humans.

And naturally, he has the patience of a god, a seemingly limitless ability to sit by and accept even the worst of circumstances quietly while he waits (read: arranges the circumstances) for it to change. Doesn't seem like a super-power at first, and technically isn't, but to actually see it in action, how calmly he can just wait…it's impressive.

By comparison, Hunter is a good bit flashier. He has been enhanced--stronger, faster, more durable, heightened senses and reflexes--nothing shocking for a monster, but certainly more than anyone else of his build and breeding would be capable of without significant training.

He even has a built-in poison resistance, shrugging off toxins that would knock out anyone else and walking away from poisons that could fell a Boss Monster with little more than a headache or a queasy feeling to show for it. Needless to say, even hard drugs and alcohol tend to barely make a dent in him.

But he wouldn't be much of a spy-slash-assassin if he couldn't also be stealthy, so he ended up learning how to suppress his LV. It's not something most monsters in a 'fell verse would even think to bother with--letting other people feel the strength of your magic and your willingness to kill is a great deterrent to being messed with, so why hide it? Why seem weaker than you are and let other monsters think they're stronger than you?

Obvious answer: when that's what you want them to think, so they'll let you get close, and so they won't think twice about being alone with you. :)

Vi is such a strange little man and every time I picture him he’s never smiling. Does he smile often? What kind of things or jokes would make him smile? I feel like his humor would be very deadpan, or he’d try out a new joke with someone and say it with a completely straight face without any indication that he’s joking.

Absolutely Vi (Swapfell Fruition) has a bone-dry sense of humor, prone to sarcasm and short quips/witticisms that could easily be taken seriously if you don't know him well.

"MY THERAPIST SAYS I'M UNHEALTHILY FIXATED ON VENGEANCE. WE'LL SEE ABOUT THAT."

".........You're joking, right?"

"YES. ...I DON'T HAVE A THERAPIST."

As for the frequency of his smiles...

Yeah, he doesn't...do that too often...

But it's mostly because he hasn't really had a lot to be happy about, and that's changing.

Gaster's gone, and (almost) all the scars he left behind are only emotional ones. His brother didn't just take off the second he had the option to, like he always said he'd do, so that's nice.

And hey, monsters aren't stuck Underground anymore so there's a whole Surface to disappear into now, to make a fresh start in free of all the bullshit that came before. Maybe he can even meet somebody...

now i’m curious, how would Vi demand attention from a s/o? is he straightforward enough to demand a snuggle (is he one to want that?) or is he more the ‘randomly hits you up to find the the closest free time you have to do something’ kind of person?

Definitely more about the verbal requests for attention, but that includes asking to spend time with you too!

Being Vi’s (Swapfell Fruition Sans) s/o, you can expect to get hit with some of the following:

“SIT OVER HERE,” and then he carries on with whatever he was doing before, now with you seated a little bit closer to him.

“GIVE ME YOUR HAND,” and he takes it and holds it until you have something else to do that you need it for.

“I WANT TO KISS YOU,” and he waits for your response to see if you’re amenable to the suggestion.

He’s generally alright without a lot of direct and active attention—and actually, mostly prefers it, he gets antsy and anxious if he feels like too much attention is on him (issues with over-monitoring his whole childhood, adolescence, adulthood)—but his desire for it tends to spike when it seems like his access to it (and you) might be limited. So…expect a lot of this behavior to happen when one of you is about to go somewhere, or someone else is talking to you, that kind of thing.

It's less jealousy and more resource-guarding—he’s not used to having attention so easily available and it already feels like a limited resource, so introducing other factors that might limit or remove his access to that attention (affection) entirely makes it feel a little more pressing.

He didn’t really need a hug while you were just hanging out, but if you’re leaving, he should get one, while you’re still here, wait, hang on, before you go…

so Vi and Hunter live in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, huh? What’s that like? Also, I know that Mal is a bit wary of his claws and it hyper vigilant with them around others, but is Vi the same way? How do those two differ personality-wise?

It works for them!

Hunter (Swapfell Fruition Papyrus) likes the outdoors and being able to do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, so he really enjoys having a place out where neighbors and rules and cops are at least a few miles off. He can head into town if he’s looking for entertainment, or company, but otherwise he’s got a place to go back to that’s remote and quiet and all his…well, mostly his, anyway.

Vi (Swapfell Fruition Sans) is away a lot for work but when he’s working from home or just getting back from a trip, he likes the seclusion too—nothing better than getting to settle in, kick off your shoes, unbuckle your belt, and go hog-wild on a box of cookies have a snack knowing no one’s around to judge you…except maybe your brother, who’s statistically more likely to be out in the woods somewhere than sitting in the living room.

As for Vi’s claws, they never got as sharp as Mal’s (Swapfell Sans), because Vi didn’t have to fend for himself (and his brother) in the same way. Vi’s not weak, but he’s not as strong as Mal either. He’s smart, and fast, and he can hold his own in a fight but he’s not a finisher because he was never meant to be and—because Gaster was in the picture to ensure that Hunter developed into the asset he was meant to be—Vi never had to.

For the same reason ('he never had to'), Vi never really developed a lot of people skills. Mal is charming and knows how to say what people want to hear, to get them to do what he wants them to do. That was a vital skill for him to learn and lean into as a young skeleton on his own with an even younger skeleton to look out for, to disarm enemies, make allies, earn sympathy or reciprocity from those who otherwise might not care what happened to him (and Rus).

But for Vi, people weren’t a potential source of help or favors. For him, people were just eyes and ears—and more importantly, mouths, that could report on things they saw or heard, to people who shouldn’t know those things. Loose lips could tip off a target early, or identify him and Hunter as involved parties, or worse, let some things about Vi and his future plans get back to Gaster.

So while Vi is very aware of people, they were more a thing for him to avoid, steer clear and duck the notice of, and that’s pretty apparent anytime he actually has to talk to someone. He’s not smooth, he’s not charming… he’s very direct and straightforward, awkward and tends not to be much for social niceties beyond the bare minimum of basic manners, leaving the moment his goal or obligation is completed.

As for how he and Mal compare, I’d say they’re both calculating and shrewd, both paranoid as hell, both self-motivated and driven regardless of sacrifice…but Mal shines in social situations and loves to impress, be envied, be feared, be respected, be known to those around him.

Vi would much rather disappear, be hidden, be unseen, unknown—though he does notably run hot and cold on it and sometimes being perceived is the only thing he wants… but he tends to squash that want deep, deep down until it goes away. It might be easier for him to demand ask for attention from a partner he trusts, if he can ever manage to find himself one of those.

if you feel up to it, I'd love to hear your thoughts on how vi and hunters relationship evolves after gaster dies and they move to the surface

like what's the vibe of their dynamic after all that? how does it change over time?

Their relationship is…complicated.

They both just got out of a situation that was toxic and pretty fucked up, to say the least.

Hunter was controlled, used like a tool, changed physically and mentally against his will, and his brother wasn’t the one making the call to do that, but he was enforcing it. He fully believed he couldn’t trust or talk genuinely to anyone around him, because one of those people was Gaster and the other acted like he was on his side but then turned around and heeled whenever Gaster whistled.

Vi was controlled too, but it was made invisible, he couldn’t talk about it and he had to act like he was broken in to Gaster’s will while fighting the temptation to do just that, to give up. He was constantly stuck between a rock and a hard place—Gaster’s orders and seemingly 24/7 surveillance and Hunter’s defiance and open scorn of his actions.

They both hurt each other, failed each other in different ways.

Vi didn’t protect Hunter from Gaster and he kept too many secrets to be someone Hunter could trust.

Hunter gave Vi no grace or benefit of the doubt and often put him in hard situations where he would either catch hell from Gaster, Hunter, or both no matter what he did.

They were both severely isolated and learned intimately what it was like to have their free will taken away from them.

So…they’re cagey with each other, after it all.

Wary.

Awkward.

Hunter knows now that Vi was just as leashed as he was, and Vi no longer has the axe hanging over his head for if he slips up, no one for either of them to answer to…

But there’s still a lot of ingrained patterns to undo, ways of thinking to unlearn.

When they have a common goal, they still work together like a well-oiled machine, ruthlessly efficient and totally unhesitating, but in the downtime they still stumble—and there’s a lot more downtime these days than there used to be, now that they’re cut loose.

They’re still figuring out how they work without Gaster in between them to make it hostile, learning to trust each other and be more open, but it’s not something either has any practice with so they do mess up.

Vi tries to assume too much control of what Hunter is doing and has to intentionally back off, Hunter blows Vi off when he means well and realizes later he probably shouldn’t have, but…y’know, the rest of the time, they’re…pretty okay?

They can talk to each other and joke and be, what seems to be, brothers, moments that used to be interrupted by Gaster intervening, or the stain of him felt even when he wasn’t there.

Sometimes even now the ghost of him will do that, making moments feel awkward and uncomfortable when they remember what things used to be like, what he would’ve said in that situation…but that’s fading with time.

Some of the best bonding they manage to do is in the process of delinquent type shit—they both like getting into places they probably shouldn’t be and picking locks, parkouring up to drop a fire escape ladder, or helping each other over barbed wire fences is an easy way to feel in-sync and get somewhere quiet where they won’t be interrupted.

They can’t talk about what happened to them, not and look each other in the eye-socket, so when they do end up actually talking about the tough stuff, it’s usually on a roof somewhere—one will go up and sit down and start thinking deep thoughts, and the other will eventually come join him and sit back-to-back until the words come out. They don’t always, sometimes there’s just silence, but…even that helps, a little.

It's a work-in-progress, those two, and it's not always easy but they’re trying.
