Fietsen, Bromfietsen und die rätselhafte Abwesenheit von nichtbrommenden Nichtfietsen

Ich habe zwei Stunden Zeit, am Bahnhof von Amsterdam herumzulungern. Wie jedes Mal bewundere ich die immensen Fahrradparkhäuser:

Eine Viertelstunde stehe ich auf der Wasserseite des Bahnhofs herum und betrachte den Verkehr auf der dort angebrachten breiten Fahrradstraße. Erstaunlich viele E-Bikes kommen vorbei, obwohl es in diesem Land gar nicht bergauf geht. Vermutlich hat man oft Gegenwind, stelle ich mir vor. Der seit 2018 auch in vielen deutschen Städten tätige Fahrrad-Abo-Anbieter Swapfiets ist stark vertreten. Motorroller und ganz kleine Autos dürfen die Fahrradstraße ebenfalls befahren. Was es allerdings – zumindest während ich dort stehe – nicht gibt, sind kleine Elektroautos, lautlose Elektro-Draufsitzroller und Elektro-Tretroller. Warum das so ist, weiß ich nicht. Flüchtiges Googeln ergibt zwar verschiedene Begründungen der Einheimischen (unebenes Straßenpflaster, Diebstahlgefahr, Grachtenwerf-Vandalismus, keine Lust), die kommen mir aber alle nicht sehr stichhaltig vor oder zumindest nicht stichhaltiger als in anderen Städten.

In Deutschland klagt man derzeit viel darüber, dass die Fahrradwege schon für Fahrräder zu wenig, zu schmal, zu schlecht sind und keine zusätzliche Nutzung durch Elektro-Kleinfahrzeuge zulassen. Hier gibt es überall luxuriöse, breite Fahrradstraßen, aber trotzdem keine Elektro-Kleinfahrzeuge. Vielleicht sind die Einheimischen einfach zu beschäftigt damit, überall mit dem Fahrrad hinzufahren. Man kann schließlich mit einem Hintern nicht auf zwei Fahrzeugen sitzen.

I’ve just gone through this awful process myself. maastrichthousing.nl is a good place to start however rooms are going fast. There is a one-off €35 fee to join the website but it collates rooms available across many different housing/room websites and once you’ve registered an interest in a room you speak directly with the landlord.If you’re only staying for a semester look out for the minimum stay requirement for the room. Some landlords want you to stay for the whole year, some only 3 months or less.From my experience, I tried doing it the traditional way of expressing my interest, trying to arrange a viewing and going from there but honestly the market moves so quickly that in the end I said I’d take the room before being able to see it in person, and consequently the landlord cancelled any arranged viewings with other people and sent me the contract to sign. So my advice is that you kinda have to take a leap of faith based on the information and photos provided before everything gets snapped up. But all is not lost as you’re looking into this a lot earlier than the many many international students who will rock up in August and start desperately looking for a room!Also don’t forget you can afford to live further away from your faculty and town centre than you might imagine if you have a bike! And if you don’t already have one and don’t want to buy one for the short time that you are there, Swap Fiets is a company that seems very popular with students, where you essentially rent a bike for however many months that you need it.

Swapfiets

Während der Velocity in Leipzig stellte Swapfiets Räder für die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer zur Verfügung. Ich probierte das Rad natürlich auch aus und bin so etwa 30 Kilometer damit gefahren.
