Something Wild (Calls You Home)

There was a sound of a pop behind him and he knew who he was. Grindelwald put a hand on Reginald’s shoulder “I know, you don’t understand it but you will one day. That it’s all for the greater good.”

If this is what it takes for his people to be free, then so be it, he tried to convince himself “For the Greater Good.”

**** Lewis finally looked up and his blue eyes met green and Newt looked away. “One month,” Lewis said “One month is all you get.”

Newt didn’t understand “What?”

“You are seventeen now, a grown man.” Lewis stood up and walked around the desk “You have one month to find a place for yourself, I don’t care how but you will be out either way.”

They sat in tense silence for a while which was broken by Esther. “You were an ambitious girl.”

Tina thought of when she was nine and Queenie seven they used to play pretend, Queenie would be the damsel in distress — the fair maiden kidnapped by a dark wix — and Tina would be the Auror — the noble knight in shining armour — rescuing her.

She loved those games so much. “You wanted to be an Auror.” Esther continued.

Tina smiled, sadly. “A childhood delusion.”

On Thursday, 7/11 I got to meet Blizzard, a snow leopard at the Sacramento Zoo. Blizzard was being trained, and I had the huge honor to feed him a few tasty morsels. 

I have had a long standing love for these incredible animals, ever since I first saw one at the San Francisco zoo back in 2006. I never knew they existed before then! 

When I wrote Something Wild Calls You Home, I gave Bucky snow leopard attributes because these famous “Ghost of the Mountains” cats seemed a fitting match to our Winter Soldier. 

The Sacramento Zoo’s latest addition to their snow leopard family was Coconut, who as he grew displayed the condition known as “swimmer’s syndrome.” He needed some physical therapy, as well as specially crafted hobbles to help keep his rear legs in place as his muscles got stronger. Amazingly, the little booties used to craft these hobbles happened to be Captain America ones. And look how tiny! 

All in all, this was an amazing experience, maybe one of the most incredible moments of my life, and I hope many more people learn how to help these fantastic animals through knowledge sharing, donations, and supporting organizations like The Snow Leopard Trust, which help protect them in their natural habitats.

There were thirteen Cursed Families in Britain. A long time ago there was a group of people who had offended a great wizard by trying to steal his magic for their own good, to punish them the wizard had placed a curse on them and that had shunned them, to put it simply.  For centuries the cursed families have been living as outcasts, only in the past century have they risen in ranks. Starting with Nigel Scamander who became a member of the Wizengamot, followed by Lewis Scamander. Theseus was supposed to do the same but he rebelled for the first and only time and became an auror.  That’s how John knows of Newt and vice versa. The Cursed Families were close and sometimes they even married into one another because of that familiarity. If he remembers correctly then John and his brother are third cousins to him and Theseus. In reality the curse was not in the blood but in the name, because women who forsook their names after marriage were supposedly not affected by the curse, which is to say the curse is total nonsense but people still believe it.

Theseus held the brown bag full of Bertie-Botts’ Every-Flavoured beans closed to his chest. He was taking them as sort of a peace offering to Newt. Theseus regrets how he acted towards Newt that March Saturday afternoon by the hippogriff paddock. He shouldn’t have said the things he said.  Saying that he had no potential and that he was set for failure was so cruel of Theseus to say, he had felt so bad that he had spent countless nights tossing and turning thinking about it.

18/9 WIP Wednesday

Sorry for being a little late 😅 I had been travelling to see extended family and had trouble writing afterwards. So, thank you @wizisbored @somefishycat @anyctibius @eriquin @kalira @auburnlaughter @stonemaskedtaliesin @violet-prism-creatively @adhdavinci for the comments! I just rewrote the opening for this chapter was I was not satisfied with it.

The sky was illuminated by the colourful fireworks and the air was filled with the cheers of the crowd encouraging their teams even if the match hadn’t started. Vinda Rosier was climbing the stairs in the large stadium that led to their seats. Her little brother, Louis, was by her side looking at everything in awe. Vinda didn’t understand what there was to gawk at, it wasn’t the first time they were seeing a professional Quidditch Stadium. But she didn’t say anything. She kept her posture straight and her face blank. She hoped she looked as regal as her mother Druella, who was walking with her father, Reginald.  This was France’s first match in the Quidditch world cup against Germany. Vinda was very much excited because her Louis had a bet. She had said “This match will end as the morning comes.” and Louis had said “Both teams are good, the match will go on till the end of the week.” They both missed their oldest brother, Eugene, he used to make interesting, crude and funny commentary when the matches got too boring but alas he was busy being important in the ministry.  Vinda smiled remembering the faces of her peers when she had told them that her parents had gotten the VIP tickets to almost all the matches. As they reached the top Vinda was heaving, not caring anymore about looking regal. What was the point of looking regal if she were dead? Her brother was also breathless. Their parents looked unbothered by the stairs as ever but Vinda could see the slight trickle of sweat and hear their soft but desperate breaths.  Her parents were so elegant. Especially her mother, there wasn’t an ounce of softness to her and that made her intimating. That was something Vinda admired though it frightened her brothers.  They reached their box which was occupied by other important people. She recognised the Ministers of France and Germany, she recognised the young CEO of Quality Quidditch Supplies chatting with the German distributor. Oh yes, Vinda knew all about them. Her parents had educated her and her brothers about all the influential people. They had said that there wasn’t anything as a true friend, every person you make acquaintance with has to serve you in some way.  Louis was waving at his friends who were sitting in lower boxes. Vinda considered her little brother naive. He still didn’t understand the concept of friends and made acquaintances with anybody.

The sky was illuminated with fireworks and the crowd was cheering with it. Vinda Rosier was walking with her parents and younger brother, Louis, with tents on either side of them. Vinda had just finished her sixth year of Beauxbaton and summer had started. She had spent her break so far locked in the greenhouse and tending to her plants and flowers and flying around with Louis. This was France’s first match in the world cup and they had really been looking forward to it. She had written to all her acquaintances that her parents had acquired the tickets to all the matches of the world cup. She wishes she could see their jealous faces. Louis and her had placed a bet on whether or not France would win this match. Vinda had said “They will” and Louis had said “Not against Brazil they won’t.” Nevertheless Vinda was excited, the cheers and shout of the people outside conveyed what she felt inside. But they were of a prestigious family so they could not show these loose emotions. They must always stay calm and elegant. She always felt like she was wearing a costume when she tried to be stoic and calm on the outside. She wishes that she could be like her Druella, her beautiful mother who always did it with ease. Vinda looked exactly like her with dark hair and darker eyes. Softness was nonexistent in her mother and that’s what made her powerful. That’s why she was respected in their circles, sometimes more than her father was.  Her parents ran a prestigious and big menagerie which housed many creatures that their parents sold. It was started by her great-grandfather, Reginald’s grandfather and now through his father it was passed down to him and then it will be passed down to Vinda or Louis.  “Oh look!” Louis pointed up at the approaching stadium. He will be starting his fifth year this upcoming school-year. Vinda looked up in awe, this is the first time she is seeing an international stadium because frankly she hadn’t been interested in Quidditch until this past year when she read a book about it’s history. “It’s huge,” Vinda whispered to her brother.  The Rosiers were a prestigious family so they were taken through the VIP entrance because their parents had purchased the best seats to watch the game in. The only downside was that there were a lot of stairs and by the time they reached their box they were exhausted. Well, Vinda and Louis were, Druella and Reginald seemed fine. They were to be sitting inside a box with the most important people. Vinda didn’t really care about it, “Is the bet still on?” she asked Louis “It is.” he grinned and they admired the pitch together, it was so much bigger than the one in school.
