foley + sound production !!!

Heather, Samuel D and myself paid a little visit to the foley room on Monday, and I think this has been some of the most fun I’ve had on a project! The sound project has been really interesting to me, and something I’d definitely consider pursuing further! We booked the room and its adjoining computer suite for SIX HOURS, which turned out to be a good amount of time because we had to sort a fair few issues before we could properly begin.

Sound is so SATISFYING and CRUNCHY! how do I elaborate... I walked on the gravel box to create footsteps, and although it got tiresome after a while, it was just glorious to crunch alongside the rather odd gentleman in our clip, which I believe is clip 3. We sourced a few sounds (room tone - which in hindsight I would record ourselves as it was very tricky to find a silent one, and a few other things like wooden creaks, and crackles for the candlelight.) I span a pen about a thousand times. We changed our ideas on this clip a few times, settling for a melancholy scene of romance, of a man haunted by his lover’s song, and then, whilst in the foley room, Samuel and I were struck by sudden inspiration to become a Swedish chanting band (if there is such a thing.) Heather recorded our joke, and we were all so amused that we decided to actually attempt this in the real thing. So our idea morphed into more of a ‘man is haunted by creepy Swedish chanters who follow him everywhere and ruin his life’. Jack B’s feedback was laughter, enjoyment, and then saying that he thought we had sourced the song online! We’ll see you all at the next Grammy’s I guess ;)  Samuel also went insane at one point and kept putting pigs and goats in the mix, and I may have laughed at the time, but with the reverb and other editing, they sound like haunting echoes atop the Swedish chanting.!!

Heather was a fantastic computer person, she was well organised and our sound was all cultivated, perfect to continue work on the next day... wherein Sam and I worked on editing, EQ, mixing, all that jazz that I have not quite mastered, and he was great on Protools! and then Heather joined us to polish it all beautiful :)  Sam continued working late on it, as I went home like a lazy tired lemon, but that was because I was now working on our next project, the short film, and we figured the rest was a one person job which Sam was willing to do! Overall our group worked really well together, and I think we’re all so proud of what we’ve done! :))
