I Like Me Better - Sweet Pea
A/N Sorry this one kinda sucks, I’ve been wanting to do a Sweet Pea fluff forever and kept doing smut and I felt like he deserved one. I wrote this before I got the requests( which I’m working on) I tried. Hope someone likes it anyway lol
Warnings: slight anxiety, angst
You sat alone on Sweet Pea’s couch, waiting for him to come home. He’d gone out on Serpent business, then texted you he was having a celebratory brew with Fangs. That was four hours ago. This type of behavior wasn’t uncommon for Pea. He just lost track of time and didn’t mean to stay out so late, he wasn’t used to having to answer to anyone. You’d called him a few times, but you knew he wouldn’t answer until he was home. You sighed, looking over at the door again. You dug your nails into the flesh of your palm, trying to talk sense into yourself and calm down. Every time Pea didn’t answer, you knew he was probably fine but you couldn’t help feeling sick to your stomach, wondering if something bad happened. Did he crash? Did he drive drunk and hit someone? Did ghoulies attack the Wyrm? Did he get in a fight that ended badly? The possibilities were endless and you had to take deep breaths to calm yourself. You heard a key in the lock, and Pea stumbled through the door. You sighed in relief that he was okay, and walked over to help him to the couch, he flopped onto it with a heavy grunt.
“Did you have fun?” You asked him.
“Yeah, Fangs danced on stage in drag, you should’ve been there it was hilarious.” He grinned.
“I’m glad you had a good time… but Pea?” You bit your lip.
“Next time can you text me if you’re going to be later than expected again? I just worry and it would be nice to know you’re okay.” You said, your body shaking a little.
“I just forgot Y/N.” He groaned, annoyed.
“I know, just next time please?” You pushed.
“Geez Y/N you’re not my mother you don’t have to check up on me and know what I’m doing all the time. I’m a grown man.” He snapped.
You felt like he’d slapped you in the face. He knew you were anxious and had a tendency to worry after losing so many people. At first you felt like crying, then you got angry, then you just felt defeated.
“I can’t do this anymore, Pea. I can’t wait up and worry like this, it’s killing me.” You mumbled.
He just rolled his eyes, turning into the pillow and ending the conversation. Pea fell asleep quickly, the alcohol wearing him out, or maybe it was the long day he’d had, but he was never so… mean. You needed some space from him, heart hurting at the way he’d tossed your feelings aside and acted like you were dramatic. You packed a small bag of clothes, deciding you’d stay with a friend for a few days just to give Pea and yourself some breathing room.
“Hello?” Betty answered the phone, a little groggy. It was nearly 3am.
“Hey Betty. I’m sorry to call so late but… can I come over? I need somewhere to stay just for a few days.” You sighed.
“Is everything okay, Y/N? Did something happen with Sweet Pea?” She asked, concerned.
“We just need some time apart.” You answered.
“Okay. Come on over.” She said.
A few days quickly turned into a few weeks. You’d stayed with Betty while avoiding Sweet Pea, and much to your dismay, he hasn’t really cared much. He hadn’t said anything anyway, save for the few texts asking where you were when he woke up the morning after you’d gone to Betty’s. You’d caught him watching you from afar at school, but other than that he hadn’t really said anything to you, or paid you any notice. Apparently, this separation wasn’t killing him like ti was killing you. Life without Sweet Pea was mundane, miserable, and you hated it. You missed curling up in his strong arms. You missed feeling safe when he held you. You missed hearing his heartbeat against your ear late at night. You missed his laugh, his voice, his lips. You missed Sweet Pea so much it felt like you couldn’t breathe, but it seemed like he was perfectly content without you. You picked at your lunch, not hungry in the slightest, when you felt a tap at your shoulder. You turned around and Sweet Pea stood there, hands in his pockets.
“Hey, Y/N… Can we talk? Privately?” he asked.
Betty and Toni gave you encouraging smiles, so you got up and followed Pea out to the bleachers.
“What did you want to talk about?” you asked, looking into his warm brown eyes.
“Why did you leave?” he asked suddenly.
“Honestly Pea, I left because you shut me out and made me feel like I was stupid for worrying when you were out all night drinking with Fangs. You disregarded my feelings when I tried to communicate with you. I just needed a few days to think, and when you didn’t call, I… I thought you’d given up on us.” you explained.
“Y/N… I was drunk, I didn’t know what I was doing and you were just gone when I woke up. I thought you didn’t want me.” he sighed, kicking at loose pebbles on the ground.
“No, Sweets. I do want you. I just want you to respect me and my feelings.” you sighed.
“You weren’t acting like it.” you huffed.
“I’m sorry, okay? I’ll keep you in the loop, I’ll come home earlier.” he promised, taking your hands in his.
“I don’t know, Pea… I miss you but how do I know you’ll really try?” you mumbled.
“I swear I’m not lying to you, just… I can’t do this without you, Y/N. I hate being away from you. You’re like, the only one who can keep me sane. I can’t sleep without you. I can’t think without you. You bring out the best parts of me and you make me want to be a better person. I am a better person around you. You inspire me to be my best. I’ve been going crazy without you. I like me better when I’m with you. I miss everything about you. I miss how you smell, how you feel wrapped up in my arms, your cooking, your stupid jokes, your smile. Your laugh… God I miss making you laugh, Y/N.” he looked like he was holding back tears. “I love you so much please come back to me.”
You stood there in silence, completely shocked. Pea wasn’t one to talk about his feelings, even around you. He was definitely mushier around you, but you would’ve bet your life savings you’d never get a romantic speech like this out of the boy. Tears welled up in your eyes and your threw yourself into his arms, sobbing into his shirt. He wrapped his strong arms around you and crushed you into his chest, and you could hear his heart racing just like yours. His lips crashed into yours like he was a starving man and you were his favorite food. He kissed you with every bit of passion, every bit of desire, every ounce of love inside him. Anything his words had missed, this kiss spoke to you. When you pulled away you were both breathing hard. He pulled you close for another embrace.
“I’ve missed this so much.” he told you, smoothing your hair down.
“I missed you too, Pea.” you hiccuped.
“I love you.” he whispered, like a tender secret for just the two of you.
“I love you more,” you giggled, peeking up at him from behind your lashes.
“That is absolutely impossible,” he kissed your nose, “Let’s get your stuff and take you home.” he smiled.
