What if “So It Goes...” is actually a breakup track?
Okay stay with me here. So It Goes is a sexy song, sure. But...something about it just feels off, even a little sad. I think this is about a relationship ending and I think that relationship is Calvin Harris. Here’s why:
"See you in the dark, all eyes on you” - Calvin Harris was in the public eye. He was a DJ in the dark. People were watching him/them (whereas no one even knew Joe)
“Cut me into pieces” - she feels fractured by their public/personal lives, losing pieces of herself to the relationship
“Hostage, gold cage to my feelings” - she’s trapped in these feelings she has for this guy, implying she can’t get out even though she wants to. She’s hostage to the memory of him
“Trippin’ when you’re gone” - this is a nod to Don’t Blame Me which is a satirical song about Taylor Swift’s reputation for NEEDING to be in love, where love is a drug, she’s constantly tripping
“We break down a little” - being in the public eye hurts their relationship. We saw all the gossip about why they broke up, when they weren’t happy. It had to do with differences in opinion about how to handle public appearances
SO IT GOES x12 - this is a Kurt Vonnegut reference about death and the unpredictability, the randomness of losing something.
“I’m yours to keep and I’m yours to lose” - she’s saying she’s all in; it doesn’t seem like Calvin was.
“All eyes on me” - sounds familiar? Cuz everybody’s watching her but she’s looking at you
“Illusionist” vs “magician” - they’re both tricksters. They’re putting on a show. They both know how to give the other what they want, but it implies it’s not real.
“Wear you like a necklace” - possessive, an accessory. Plus, he gave her a locket for their 1-year anniversary which she posted about when there were rumors of their breakup
“Come here dressed in black now” - A funeral. Plus, Calvin looooooves wearing black.
SO IT GOES - I cannot get over the importance of this line.
“You did a number on me” / “I did a number on you” - this is a negative idiom. It means someone had a negative affect on your life; there’s no way to spin it. She’s saying they each messed each other up a little -- and she kept count (and we know from “End Game” she’ll forgive but she won’t forget)
SO IT GOES - this is a narrative transition to another subject when here’s not an easy way to move on and explain the inexplicable.
She’s saying “So it goes”, marking the death of her relationship with Calvin, her reputation from the first half of the album, her personas of the “old Taylor” and she’s moving on with the ellipses to a new chapter.
WHICH STARTS WITH GORGEOUS. THE SONG WHERE SHE MEETS JOE. THE SONG WHERE SHE MENTIONS A BOYFRIEND SHE’S NO LONGER CONNECTED TO. THE SONG WHERE THE SECOND HALF OF THE ALBUM STARTS OUT TO SHOW THE REAL TAYLOR.
So It Goes... is a breakup track highlighting the death of a relationship that could have been good, that was good in so many ways, but that couldn’t last because their reputations. It’s bittersweet; it’s a mature goodbye. She’s saying there are things that went wrong and it had to end. So it goes.
